“A Wonderful Honeymoon in the Cabanas!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2008

In June 2008 we stayed at this resort in the Cabanas for our honeymoon. It was a wonderful 10 nights and I can’t recommend this hotel highly enough! It presents excellent value for money and wonderful facilities, location and service.
Upon arrival (which was 9pm in the evening) we were seated in the lounge area and given a refreshing guava fruit cocktail while they processed our check in. The check in was quick and easy, as mentioned by other reviewers the staff at the check in desk don’t have the best command of English however this didn’t create any great problems.
We were shown to our room and they explained all of the facilities within the room and gave us directions to all of the pools and restaurants and bars around the resort.
The room itself was great, very spacious and nicely decorated. The bed was king size, had plenty of pillows though the mattress was rather hard. The bathroom was huge and contained a safe in the wardrobe, there was a nice outdoor shower if you felt like braving the mosquitos and a very private terrace and little plunge pool with two sun lounges and a table with umbrella. Each evening they would bring complimentary canapés to our room and we could order two complimentary cocktails at any point during the day, either delivered to our room or consumed at the bar.
Each day the room was cleaned, they were a little unpredictable with their times, but always did a great job. The complimentary toiletries were restocked daily and they provided two complimentary bottles of drinking water daily. On a couple of occasions the white sheets they put on our bed were stained, the most offensive was a blood stain hidden under the pillow. I was a little disappointed that they still used these sheets on our bed. The ladies who cleaned our room were very nice and when my husband became ill with food poisoning in the last couple of days of our stay they showed concern and asked how he was feeling and made an effort to be as quick as possible to allow him back in the room sooner.
The restaurant was very nice, their breakfast had a huge variety of delicious food. The cocktail bar next to the restaurant was great. Wine is very expensive so I drank cocktails all the time. Their Mai Tai’s, Singapore Slings and Volcano’s all taste the same, but they are very nice anyway! On the last night we had a slight issue with the service in the restaurant and bar. The waitress forgot our order for our cocktails and we had to go and remind her, then when we were seated for dinner, I asked the same waitress for my meal with no prawns, it came out with prawns and they brought out a replacement meal and it still had prawns in it! Third time it was finally right, but there was no apology and it was still charged at full price on the bill, despite me being left to eat my meal long after my husband had finished his. My only issue would be with the service charge which is added to the bills. All food and drinks attract at 10% service charge and an additional 7% government tax. I think they should quote their prices inclusive of these charges rather than hitting you up for another couple of hundred baht at the end of the night! There isn’t much variety on the restaurant menu and the same menu is in the rooms for room service. The resort pools were all very nice and staff in the pool bars were lovely.
The location is superb, right in the middle of the town and close to all shops and restaurants. Pappa’s restaurant which is a couple of doors up from Centara proved to be a good place to eat, though their white wine was ghastly with the distinct taste of off meat. We also had dinner at Angus O’Tooles which is an Irish pub across the road, we presumed this would be safe but unfortunately after consuming a pizza there my husband got food poisoning and was very ill for a couple of days which meant we had to cancel a day trip we had paid for.
Overall I loved this resort. I would love to go back and have another 10 days there as they made our honeymoon very special and memorable!

This hotel was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a mid-priced resort. Much better than 3 stars in my opinion. There are 3 main buildings plus single cabana style villas. We stayed in the Tropicale building, which was right next to the pool- fantastic! Being off season, it was very quiet and easy to get a sun bed or drink at the bar. The cabana villas are gorgeous with own spa- would book there next time. The rooms were very clean, and the houskeeping service was excellent. The 3 pools were very nice and clean. The service throughout the hotel was excellent- the people very friendly and eager to do anything to help. I had a facial and massage in the spa- very good, although quite hard pressure on the massage! You can get much cheaper massages outside the resort, but I liked the clean, attractive surroundings in the hotel spa. Breakfast was good, with lots of variety. We also ate in tha Azure restaurant next to the Lagoon pool, and it was good. A variety of asian and western food. Happy hour half price drinks 4-6pm was really good. We tried a variety of cocktails. There are loads of restaurants just outside the hotel- we had drinks in the Irish pub and dinner twice at Two Chefs- very nice restaurant with good steaks and thai prawn curry. Tuk Tuks into Patong for cheap shopping were only 300 Baht (about $9 AUS) and were easy to get just outside the hotel. We had a taxi drive us around for the entire day for 2000 Baht (about $60 AUS)- other people bartered down for much cheaper, but we considered this a bargain for all day air conditioned comfort! Karon was much quieter than Patong- I would recommend staying there and taking a taxi or Tuk Tuk into Patong. Lots of shopping for tshirts, sarongs, cushion covers, DVDs and souveneirs in Patong- offer them a third of their asking price, then barter to about half of their original price. We also went to Phuket Zoo (a bit sad, but we had our photo taken with a tiger), FantaSea (don't bother about dinner- yuck!), Big Buddah & Chalong Temple, Phuket Town (Phuket Festival is a nice big shopping centre but not very cheap), 4 in 1 Siam Safari (very good- elephant ride was the best part) and (our favourite) speedboat to Phi Phi Island- this was fantastic, snorkeling with the tropical fish, gorgeous white sand beaches and turquoise blue water- highly recommend this tour.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Phuket and can't wait to go back.
Downsides- the poverty, the humidity, the crazy driving

We regularly use Tripadvisor so like some have mentioned, were a little wary of this hotel which was totally unfounded as it turned out. We stayed as part of a group, all in the Cabana Pool Villas, and we couldn't fault it. Our rooms were adjacent at our request (although as others have mentioned on this site, the staff's English at reception is not great but we got there in the end!), and the additional living space outside your room where the plunge pool/jacuzzi is situated, is perfect for post dinner drinks all together where we could put the 2 year old down to sleep, or more often than not, stay up with the adults! The space is invaluable and of course it is lovely to have a pool of your own.

The rooms themselves are perfect; lovely bathroom; outside shower (as well as internal); lovely beds; linen replaced regularly; modern TV with many channels; tea and coffee making facilities; complimentary canapes; complimentary cocktails (which you have to collect from the front bar so you have to be quite deicated to avail yourself of this option!); daily maid service etc etc. We couldn't fault it.

The main pools are absolutely lovely - we stayed around the kids pool mainly, but the Tropix pool (the biggest), was also great. The other pool (the original one) looks a bit dated by comparison to the others but is also fine.

There are 3 areas to the hotel, each fairly contained so although it is a big hotel, you don't really notice it as you tend to keep to your own area. The orginal part of the hotel (which are the cheapest rooms), is OK but it does look dated and has no particular 'features' to identify it as a hotel in Thailand - it looks like any other hotel room anywhere in the world. The Tropicana rooms are more modern and are pool facing and are absolutely great, and the Cabana Pool Villas are fantastic as above. One tip though: if you are considering this for your honeymoon, go for the pool villa as the honeymoon suite is in the main (old) building, and is positively rundown by comparison to the pool villas. Also the view from the honeymoon suite, albeit from a jacuzzi, overlooks mainly shops and buildings and is not worth the extra money - you'd be better off with a Tropicana room.

The location is fantastic as everyone has said; restaurants/shops/laundry/ massage on your doorstep, even a dental clinic (which several of our group used and were most impressed with - certainly cheaper than dentists in the UK!).

The beach is about a 10 minute walk and is also lovely. Clear blue seas, fantastic waves and a great restaurant at the top (it looks like a shack but the food / service/ hospitality is brilliant!)

Overall, other than the front desk staff having initial difficulty understanding that we wanted 3 rooms together, we honsetly couldn't fault this hotel. We are experienced and demanding travellers and we were most impressed! Don't hesitate to book it - you will have a fantastic time!

We have just returned from eight nights at this centrally located hotel and cannot praise it enough. From arrival to departure, we found staff to be pleasant and helpful.

Our room, a Tropical Deluxe, was big, clean and easily accommodated a young family of four. Housekeeping was excellent as was the service at the nearby Tropix Lounge both morning and night. Breakfasts were enjoyable and varied.

As for our young ones, they were hardly out of the pools and, if they were, could be found at the Just 4 Kids clubhouse that kept them entertained during the odd shower.

It's only a short walk to the beach, restaurants and the more restrained Karon nightlife. A breath of fresh air from Patong.

We aim to be back - and soon.

Travel: 11th-21st June 2008
After reading several reviews on this hotel, I was a little wary about staying here, however once we arrived and settled in, those thoughts went totally out the window! This is a fantastic hotel that I could not fault. The Deluxe Lagoon Suite accommodated our needs as a family of 4, with a view over the pool area. The buffet breakfast was awesome with a great variety of foods to accommodate everyone's needs....my boys (4yo & 2 yo) loved the choice of food. The hotel is central to the shops in Karon, and because it is a small area, the shop owners get to know you soon enough. A great restaurant to eat at is the "Red Onion".....very cheap and the food is delicious. The whole Karon/Kata area is wonderful and easy to get around. We travelled into Patong a few times and enjoyed the shopping and sights it had to offer but were glad we stayed in Karon where it is not so hectic. When going to Patong, it is a must to visit Jungceylon shopping centre- nice to get off the streets and purcahse goods without being hassled. They have an excellent asian bizarre down stairs where the goods are of much better quality than those in the markets- definitely worth a look.

Overall, I can not fault any part of our holiday and cannot wait to get back there again.

Enjoy,
Liz

Very impressed with this hotel.

Staff were all very polite, pleasant and couldn't do enough for you.

The public areas and gardens were well kept and constantly being cleaned, trimmed etc.The hotel has 3 pools, the lagoon pool was our favorite, again clean, tidy with plenty of sunbeds.

We had booked bed and breakfast, lots of choice for breakfast and slightly different dishes every day. We didn't eat in the hotel at night however often had a lunch time snack at the pool restaurant. Meals here were more expensive than outside the hotel but reasonable compared to UK prices. They were always tasty and well presented.

Couldn't fault anything at all about the hotel.

The resort itself was quieter than we expected however we soon got used to this. Patong was far busier and we went there a couple of evenings during our stay.

In Phuket, I had the taxi drive drive me from hotel to hotel and what I learned is that the BEST prices are on the internet. Each hotel quoted me more when I arrived than internet prices so I found a computer and booked the Centara Karon via internet which was cheaper than they offered me on the spot.
The beach was fair , nothing I'd go back to. The area is okay. We spent a lot of time in the pool. The rooms have 2 queen or 2 double beds and we added a rollaway. We thought Karon was a disappointment after having been to Phi PHi Holiday Inn first.
We loved the English pub outside and the corner restaurant Thai food is really good @ the Thail restaurant right outside the hotel. I paid 60 baht per kil. to do laundry, and found lots of places in Kachanaburi (later in the trip) that did laundry for 20 baht per kil.
Hey, it's a 5-10 minute walk across a busy road to the beach. THis hotel is NOT on the beach.

  • Liked — Pool area and quaint little town surrounding the hotel
  • Disliked — Walking to the beach was a hassle.
