After staying in Patong for four nights and with just 3 more nights till we were due to leave Thailand we decided to leave the hussle and bustle behind and stay somehwere relaxing and by the beach. We had a good look around some of the beaches to the North of Phuket and then headed South, but not too far. Just 20mins from Patong was the quiet location of Marina Phuket Resort. We walked in off the street and were offered a 50% off season rate of $150US per night staying in the Ocean View room. We were stoked as we could never afford to stay in a room for $300US. After thinking about it, we phoned to make our booking and were told the OV room was avaiklable for the first night but we could have a jungle room then transfer to an OV. Although disappointed we decided to take it. When arriving there they told us our OV room was available for the 3 nights.
After a welcome drink and a cool facecloth to wipe the humid grime away, we were shown to our room. WOW! If you like french polished teak then this is for you. The wooden floorboards are gorgeous. The room had a welcome feel, was clean and very spacious with large walk in shower, large bath, an apple computer installed using the flatscreen tv and wireless keyboard, and a big private balcony to sloth out on and enjoy the jungle/beach views. I would suggest they do some selective pruning of the trees so the ocean view isn't so obscured. A beach bag was provided with to beach towels to use at the beach and the pool. It was changed with fresh towels daily. The air-con was loud and deafened the sound of the seas crashing onto the beach and rock below. We made the mikstake of turning it off one night and woke at 2am sweltering in 29 degree heat!!
The pool was amazing, three different pools and depths, with randomly placed imitation rocks with seats.
The resturant was lovely, On the Rocks. There are two resturants but one is currently getting an upgrade which disappointingly we were not told about when, 1/ enquiring about staying and 2/ making a booking and 3/ on arrival. We worked it out for oursleves when going to the pool as you can't miss the sounds of construction. A minor oversight which didn't really bother us too much as there was an alternative. The room rate included a daily breakfast at On the Rocks. The venue is small and couldn't cater for large crowds and a full buffet so an a la carte menu is available which was ok but not much options. The coffee is lovely and freshly brewed.
The gardens are immaculate and overwhelmingly peaceful. Only thing is in the heat it seemed a long way to our room but a dip in the pool rectified that.
The beach is accessed by a short flight of stairs from the resort. At this time of year its dangerous to swim but walking in to waist deep was ok if you can read the waves and know where the rips were, clearly, some people didn't know how too and were dangerously in the wrong places at times. There are lifeguards in the area though.
Nadia, a baby elephant, arrived daily at 1030am. For 20 Baht you can get a bag of bananas and feed her, if your lucky she can kiss you on your cheek.
We loved our stay and they even took us to the airport as a free transfer.
