I am a beach lover and every time I am at a resort with a beach, I will never sit down by the pool, but always be on the beach.

While visiting Phuket, I only went to Karon beach once and that was already too much. Even my children were asking around 1 pm if we could go back to the hotel and stay by the pool instead.

The water is very nice, warm and clear blue, the sand is nice as well, but everything else is just not nice, to say the least....
The umbrellas and the mats that they are renting are siting one near the other, with only about 1 meter between you and your neighbours, not to say how uncomfortable is to lie down on those mats for more than a half an hour....
The vendors are passing by every few minutes trying to sell you all kind of cheap and tacky staff. There are people offering you massage on the beach, but by taking a look at the place you would actually need to sit if you want that massage, you would probably feel really disgusted.
If you want to have lunch, you need to go to a restaurant, there are no places around where you could buy something to take with you on the beach.

We are lucky enough to be able to visit the Caribbeans every year (Jamaica, Mexico, Aruba, Cuba, Saint Lucia, etc.) and probably this is the reason that we were really not impressed by Karon beach, but just be aware that is not exactly "paradise" and is more like "people on top of each other with cheap and tacky things surrounding you".

We loved Karon Beach - it's such a long stretch of beach, good for walking and plenty of restaurants along it to stop at!

All the nicer resorts are in Karon Beach, it is a way of separating them from the Patong Beach crowd. Sadly Karon beach is quite sad and looks very neglected. Footpaths are run down and lots of empty buildings and resorts left for mother nature to over run. Not many stores to purchase necessary things like milk etc. IS very quite though and only a short ride to Patong for shopping etc.

Once again the government are still very slow at getting to grips with what is bringing money to their country. Please, please get the sun loungers, umbrellas and eateries back on the beach. Families what to sit and relax on the beach, be able to purchase refreshments and shelter from the sun if they have children. This 90% free beach is absolutely pathetic and since removing the loungers 2 years ago the beach is looking dirty, at least it got cleaned on a nightly and daily basis when the little huts were there.

We preferred Karon to Kata beach. A bit busy at some spots with rows of umbrellas, but a few meters away from these areas it wasn't crowded at all. The beach has nice sand and clear water and there were mainly families around. You will find plenty of restaurants in walking distance, mainly toward the Kata end. No paradise beach though.
