Baan Suay Resort Karon Beach
Ranked #109 of 134 Hotels in Karon
Reviewed January 10, 2010

We paid for our week long stay in advance. When we arrived, my wife was not thrilled with the Baan Suay for three reasons: First, the room was not very clean and it was three flights of slippery tile to reach the room. Second, the room that our children were to sleep in was devoid of windows and natural light. And third, the pool is deep enough that our children could not safely touch the bottom with their heads above the water. They also sit right on a busy road and the courtyard/lobby is very noisy with traffic. So, we lost our money for the week's stay, as my wife found a different resort to stay at close by. It was much quieter and safer for our kids. I will say that the staff and owner at Baan Suay were very apologetic and nice about the whole deal, but it certainly added to our expenses for the trip as our money was not refunded since they were unable to "subrent" the room. When reading the reviews for this guest house, it obviously works well for many travelers, but it didn't work for our family.

Right from the get-go we felt at home at Baan Suay. The lobby is comfortable and clean. The rooms are spotless and comfortable. The beach is a 15 minute walk, but we enjoyed window shopping on the way. All in all we had a great experience!

I am currently in my fifth day of a six day holiday in Karon with my girlfriend and am staying at Baan Suay. I chose this place because almost every review I read was excellent. Everyone raved about the service, the food, the facilities, etc. Heres my take:

The Room: I'll agree that our room is quite lovely. Nice comfy bed with beautiful wood furniture and a huge window that has a view of the hill across the street. The bathroom leaves a bit to be desired with an asian shower and not really any hot water in the sink. You also aren't suppose to out toilet paper in the toilet. The maids arrange the towels beautifully, which gives it a homey touch. Overall its a nice room.

The facilities: Very refreshing deep pool. Open air restaurant and and bar are laid out nicely. Sofas are a nice tough. We really enjoyed the pool especially after a hot day at the beach.

The food: Here is where I start to disagree with other reviews. Outside of their delicious banana shakes, the food is mediocre and takes forever to come, even when we are the only ones there. Additionally, given its lack of proximity to the beach, it's quite overpriced. The thai food is ok but the portions are not very big and pad thai for instance was over 100 baht. The burgers and mini baguettes are pretty lousy and cost way too much. For breakfast one morning I ordered pancakes with chocolate, thinking that meant chocolate chip pancakes. Instead, about 40 minutes later a single dry pancake with a bottle of hersheys syrup appeared. I stopped eating there altogether after the first 3 days, and instead focused on some places in town, which have better, cheaper and more plentiful food much closer to the beach.

The service: The maid service is great and the place is well maintained. The owners never introduced themselves to me and I had to identify Supporn on my own. We had a job interview in Chalong, about 15-20 minutes away, and I had them arrange a taxi for us. The same guy who got us from the airport came and took us there and back with no problems, but we were charged 700 baht. In comparison, the trip from the airport, which was an hour each way for the driver, was 800, so we felt pretty ripped off. I mean common, in Beijing where I live you could go from the airport to the center of the city and back for the equivalent of 700 baht. Overall the staff was quite friendly but somewhat reserved. I didn't book any of our excursions through them so I cant really say much about that.

Location: This place advertises itself as being a 10 minute walk from the beach. Realistically its more like 20 min at a reasonable pace. You might be able to get there in 10 minutes if you put on sneakers and jog. There's a 7-eleven and some decent restaurants close by, but if you want to be out on the town you need to walk about 10 minutes at least. However, it is quiet at night and we certainly appreciated that.

Overall this place was nice and relaxing and had its perks, but was nothing spectacular. If you want a laid back place with a pool and nice rooms than this is a good bet, but its a bit pricey for a guest house.

My Wife & I have just go back from our holiday in Phuket.

Our stay @ Baan Suay was superb. An in-depth review of the Hotel is as follows;

1. Location: Baan Suay is located on Patak Road (East). It's an hour's drive from the airport.

There is a neon sign with the hotel's name on it to help you find the place :-). It was raining when we arrived in Phuket & our driver
actually drove past the Hotel as the neon sign wasn't installed then ;-)

The nearest 7-11 store is a 2 min walk from the hotel. Karon beach could be a 10 min walk if you can manage to get through another hotel ( Old Phuket, Movenpick etc) or 25 mins should you choose to walk along Patak Road.

2. Lobby: The lobby has an extremely cosy look & feel to it.

Solid-wood dining tables, a low-seating lounge area, sofa sets & a pool table are neatly placed in the lobby.

You can enjoy an EPL Soccer match or two on a projector screen in the lobby.

The hotel has a well stocked bar. The bar area also the the desktop computer where guests can access the internet free of cost.

Free Wi-fi is on offer so you can enjoy internet connectivity anywhere in the hotel.

3. Swimming Pool: The pool is just next to the lobby. The deepest end would be about 10 feet. The pool & the area surrounding it is rather well-maintained as is the hotel.

4. Rooms: The rooms are spacious, clean & well decorated.

The king size bed & comfortable spring mattress ensured that we
slept well :-)

The lady who would clean the room daily would display the bathing & hand towel in the shape of a lotus flower. It was a very pretty sight.

Our room had a nice big balcony with a metal table & two chairs. Distant sea-view is on offer.

The bathroom was just the right-size.
Instant water-heater & hand-shower have been provided in the bathroom. We would have preferred a shower though.

The only thing that i had trouble with in the room were the charging-points. They are too few in number & not conveniently located.

5. Food: Some of our most memorable meals were enjoyed in the restaurant @ the hotel. The food was delicious & very well presented. My wife is a vegetarian but we had no problem whatsoever in getting vegetarian food @ the hotel. The Veg Spring Rolls & Vegetable fried rice are highly recommended.

6. Service: I had saved this bit for the very end on purpose. Service is what sets this hotel apart from competition. Daniel, Suporn & their staff ensured that we were well looked after throughout our stay.

Daniel & Suporn have the cutest kids. You should watch their adorable lil girl run about in the lobby area.

We highly recommend Baan Suay to all who value personalised service & are not looking for a glitzy pricey hotel.

I have stayed in hundreds of hotels due to work and holidays and mostly in 4 or 5 star accommodation. I don't know if Baan Suay has accreditation but it is the best place I have stayed in. Ever.

Baan Suay accommodation; the rooms are spacious with excellent quality furniture, very comfortable large beds, en suite and very airy. They are maintained daily and always look absolutely fantastic.

Baan Suay facilities; a swimming pool and a bar/restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere. Everything is comfortable and smart where you can sit and relax, enjoy private conversations or join in conversations with other guests and staff. Added to this is a free pool table for patrons to use.

Baan Suay location; a 2 minute ride in to Karon or a 5 to 10 minute walk depending on how many shops you stop at. En route is the local Buddhist temple whose grounds also accommodate the market. You also get to see the amusing 'petrol stations' at the side of the road - 1 litre whiskey bottles filled with fuel sitting on a table outside cafés and shops. Walking through the Movenpick resort means you are a fairly quick walk to the beach.

Baan Suay staff; I have saved the best to last. The owners are Suporn and Daniel and they are the two most welcoming and laid back hosts who oversee a very efficient operation. However, they employ a fantastic team of people who maintain your room, serve you lovely food and drink, can arrange any activity you want at no extra charge but with very good providers and give you tips on where to go to satisfy your wants. The staff don't impose themselves on you but are always there in case you have any queries or concerns and help you in the friendliest of manner.

If you want to stay somewhere where you aren't just a number, somewhere where the staff really do want you to have a great stay but you can still be left alone if that is what you want whilst having high end accommodation at a low to mid end price... contact Baan Suay and stay there.

Friendly, chilled , very clean.
The owners ,Daniel and SuPorn made all the difference to our holiday. Having travelled a lot and never returning to a place Baan Suay has made the difference and will be revisited !!
The hotel was very friendly and welcoming, very clean and the food was amazing. The fact that Daniel is English and SuPorns English is excellent really helps your holiday as they can tell you where to go for that "special meal " or " better bargain ".If you want a whole fresh fish cooked to your likinh just ask Suporn the day before.
We stayed for 3 weeks with two children of 10 and 12 and they did not want to come home.
Pool table and facebook was ideal for the eldest whilst jumping in the pool with Josh was enticing for the youngest.
We hired mopeds whilst there so we could tour all the beaches and island. Beach is 10 mins walk but this ensures you have a good sleep away from the bars.I would not recommend a guest house in town.
The travel agencies in the UK advise not to go to Phuket in July / August. I strongly advise to go. Beaches are deserted, prices are cheaper/ the waves are fun but above all you will not hit the crowds and will have time to meet the friendly natives.
Do eat Oysters in the Reggae bar which hangs over the cliffs- especially at sunset.Great place to buy necklaces and bracelets off of the locals.....whilst watching the sunset go down
Ask Dan and Su to send the tuk tuk or taxi to that amazing restaurant in Chalong Harbour ( so cheap for fesh fish , oysters, crab etc).
There is so much to do in Thailand. The difference staying at Baan Suay is that you will have the advice on where to go and when- just ask and this will make all the difference as it did to our holiday
