“Nice break away”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2014 via mobile

We booked this through KGB deals, and included an upgrade to a castle room. The grounds are lovely, and nice to have a drink outside. Staff are helpful and polite, booking taxis etc. studley itself is tiny, but we still found places for dinner there. Would recommend the hotel

On the plus side the staff were friendly and the main reception rooms were good. But walking down the corridor to the lift and my room was very tired looking.

The bedroom did not get WiFi which is very unfortunate as they advertise this for conference facilities and I wanted to make some Skype calls - could have gone downstairs to the lounge but who wants to make conference calls in front of others.

The bed was very uncomfortable and everytime I turned over you could hear the springs which woke me up. The bathroom was fine and the room was clean.

The evening meal was good (except for the pate starter which was tasteless and the onion chutney only tasted of vinegar) - but the main course and dessert were excellent.

Breakfast was good - except we asked for tomato ketchup which never turned up. But to be fair the waitress was working single handed as someone had called in sick. But it made me wonder why there were several staff behind the glass in the reception area who could have surely helped out.

We have stayed in several De Vere Hotels, and upon receipt of an invitation to return, chose to stay with you at Studley Castle on the night of Thursday 13 March. You have a very fine building, I am afraid our experience was well below par.

You advertise free wi-fI, alas, no available passwords upon request, and no information pack in the room to advise on breakfast time, ah well we thought, never mind.

A 10pm visit to the bar encountered a mop and bucket, clearly the bar staff were not expecting us, but it was quickly removed, 8 more clients came in, although the floor was mopped half an hour later with us all in the bar, ah well!

At 7am ish we were awoken by a fire alarm. We left room 309 and followed the fire exit signs down the stairs and onto a rear lawn, no sign as to where to go, but a walk around the building on wet grass located the assembly point. No Warden enquiry, no comments received until 25 minutes later, when we were told we could come in now, but no explanation. Ah well...

Following a cup of tea in our room, we went down to breakfast at 9ish. The tea I requested was poured from a flask, and was warm but obviously stale, so I requested coffee, which was more tasty, but only luke warm. The cooked breakfast looked most appealing, but sadly was as old as the tea, bacon like cardboard and luke warm sausage. A second coffee must be hot I thought, 8 more had come down for breakfast, but no, still luke warm. And as for toast, well the bread had run out, so a request for more was necessary.

And an enquiry to both the dining room staff and receptionist relating to the cause of the alarm at 7 elicited a 'we don't know, sorry about that' reply.

I am afraid this is not what I expected of a De Vere Hotel and at present am not inclined to use the chain again.

You have very fine premises, but I am afraid it has unfulfilled potential.

I sent this directly to the manager the following day, but have yet to receive a reply.

Just returned home after a two night stay and had a lovely time . The castle is beautiful very impressive especially as you approach at night time . We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful some are only young but did a very good job so well done them . Our room was good and bathroom was big but only had shower and no bath so if we returned would request a room with one . We stayed on a B&B basis plus evening meal and could not fault the food or service we received . To sum up we had a lovely relaxing stay and would defiantly return soon we wanted to rebook in April but sadly it's full so may be later in the year . One last thing is the road leading up to castle is very uneven so this needs addressing as I'm sure it will be probably in the summer when weather is better . I would recommend this hotel it's in a beautiful part of the country a lovely escape if only for a little while .

Studley Castle flatters to deceive a little, the setting is lovely and the staff all very helpful, but rooms are a little tired and although the food at dinner was nice, there were no steak knives, the waitress didn't know which steak was which and there wasn't enough cheese to make a cheese board ! All a little "nit picking" I know, but it's the little things that make the difference, couple that with the painfully slow service at breakfast and the bathroom door handle falling off - could do better

Just returned from the hotel with great disappointment. The hotel looks very impressive when you drive up to it and brings a smile to your face. The receptionist Ruth was very welcoming and helpful.

We were directed to our room which was a double deluxe upgrade which was quite small clean but dated and dull. The bed was very uncomfortable and the springs were close to the surface and "pinged" when you moved and dug into your back! We rang reception to complain and they immediately moved us to another room, which again was in desperate need for a refurb. The paint had yellowed due to age and the emergency lighting was full of dead flies. This is when we asked what deluxe meant. We were told slightly bigger rooms. This was probably the smallest Devere room we have ever stayed in.

When it came to breakfast we had to clear our own table as the waitress was running around catering to other complaints as there was little food cooked and people waiting for cooked meats, beans, eggs etc. My wife cooked herself some toast and was then told they had ran out of butter.

The staff were very good and polite. I'm not knocking the staff at all. Devere should refurbish this lovely building before putting their name to it and bring it to the standard of their other hotels. This was the first stay for some couples there and said they will never deal with this chain again!! We had to tell them this is not their usual standard.

If it was refurbished I would gladly stop again.

My husband and I took my parents for dinner and to look at the hotel as we had not visited for a while.

We were delighted to see it looking better than ever, we received a warm welcome from Hollie who took us through to the bar for a pre dinner drink but a lovely roaring fire.

Dinner was faultless the food was delicious and ladies that served us did with a smile and nothing was to much trouble.

Next stop we will try the lovely Sunday lunch menu.

I cant imagine a better setting for Sunday lunch looking over the rolling fields and in a castle!

We will be back soon.

Thank you
