“Average and pricey”
Review of Aei's Thai Restaurant - CLOSED

I have ordered green curry with chicken, barbecued chicken pieces and pad thai.

The green curry and pad Thai were alright, BBQ chicken was actually stir fried chicken. I was anticipating it to be a BBQ type dish.

3 dishes for $45. It's pricey, especially for a restaurant located in Springvale. They had a fried rice dish and it was selling for $15! Madness really.

Really surprised at the previous review, having lived in Thailand for nearly 4 years I have been trying to find a Thai restaurant that is authentic and not overloaded with oil, sugar and salt for when I don't want to cook Thai at home. Aei's Thai is not that place. Found it overpriced, bland in spice and not a real reflection of Thai cuisine. Feels to me like a lot of Thai resturants here 'dial it in" when it comes to their menu, and this place is no exception.

Authentic is not the word i'd use when describing this restaurant - for me it was anything but.

Whilst the reviewer may have lived in thailand for 4 years I doubt very much that they left
the well trodden tourist path and partaken of real Thai food. Our Head Chef is a Thai
national and her skills have been recognised as exceptional in both Australia and
her home country. She prides herself in not adding extra sugar and salt to her
dishes like the 'McDonalds Thai restaurants' pandering to clientele with an
uneducated palate. Indeed she insists on cooking the food as she was taught, using
full fat coconut cream for the curries and making many of the sauces from scratch to
retain authenticity. However, since everything is cooked fresh we can tailor the amount of chilli heat added. To have the dishes 'Issan hot' all the customer has to do is ask their server as it states on each page of the menu. I am not sure what the term 'dial it in' means in this context. If the reviewer is able to return I am sure that their spice requirements can be satiated.

I have eaten here with friends for the last year or so and have to say that it is the most authentic Thai restaurant I have even eaten in. The food is always served quickly and you can definitely taste the difference due to the quality of the fresh produce used. They have a very extensive menu with dishes from all over Thailand so take your time with ordering. The staff are very helpful and will always steer you to their most popular dishes. There are too many 'specials' to name but my favourites are the pad pongali with prawns, drunken noodles, roast belly pork and kanar and 3 flavoured fish. Don't forget to leave some room for the vast range of ice creams!
