“MUST STAY in Lahad Datu”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

Most people are in Lahad Datu as a stop-over either going or returning from Danum Valley Field Center, Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Tabin Wildlife Reserve, or along the Kinabatangan River. Tisha and Simon have turned this "stop-over" town, not noted for tourist attractions, into a great vacation experience on it's own. Their attention to detail is above 5-star expectations but at reasonable prices. They helped us book our stay at the field center and then picked us up afterwards without our even needing to note the center's van arrival time. They took us to the airport for our next flight and got us the best seats -- again without our even asking. Dinner was simply a magical experience with fantastic food and impeccable service. They flawlessly accommodated for vegetarian food. Breakfast was also noteworthy. Additionally, they arranged an impromptu day bike tour for us that exceeded expectations -- see separate review. Truly the best hosts ever. Don't miss the opportunity to stay with them, eat delicious food, and have every need quickly attended to while enjoying amazing tours you really can't get anywhere else.

We travelled all over Sabah during our three week honeymoon in June 2013, including a one night stop in Lahad Datu on our way to the Danum Valley. We chose Bike and Tours on the back of the Trip Advisor reviews and we were so glad we did.

Tisha and Simon insisted on picking us up from the bus station and driving us to their home at no extra cost. On arrival we were treated to a refreshing welcome drink and some delicious spring rolls made by Tisha. We relaxed in the lovely courtyard for a while before showering for dinner. When we booked our stay, Tisha contacted us to see if we wanted B&B or dinner too. We chose to have dinner and it was a good move. As a vegetarian, I sometimes struggled to find food that I liked and enough variety during our stay in Sabah but Tisha's spread of Malaysian curries was absolutely delicious.

Our double room was spotlessly clean as was the bathroom, the room had air con and a balcony with a rocking chair. It was the little touches that make this place special though, such as the fresh flowers in the room - pink roses for our honeymoon and the candles in the bathroom and courtyard, which all added to the welcoming atmosphere created by our wonderful hosts.

Tisha and Simon could not do enough for us and it was obvious that they really do care about their guests.

Our only regret is not being able to stay longer. We didn't realise the different biking tours that Tisha and Simon offer and if we had had time, we would have definitely stayed and tried a couple.

We loved the clean and pretty room. Simon and Tisha were very friendly and went our of their way to make sure we were comfortable. The breakfast was great and large. We also had them cook dinner for us. It was so tasty that we signed up for them to cook the 2nd night for us also. The food was Malaysian and consisted of multiple dishes. It definitely had to be the best choice for Lahad Datu. Their food rivaled the food provided at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Simon and Tisha are the best hosts you could hope for, the rooms (and beds) are comfortable and the whole house is full of little touches such as the candles in the bathroom, the travel mags by the sofa, the tea and coffee machine available at all times. Meals are served in the beautiful 'garden', and Simon is always making sure you have enough to eat and drink, from the delicious welcome drink (with swiss herbs) to Tisha's amazing food (sweetcorn fritters like you have never had before just as a welcome snack). There is no obligation to eat at the house, but we ate every meal there as it was so good and Simon and Tisha are such great people. Simon even went to the airport the morning of our departure and checked us in while we had breakfast! You will never find this type of care in a 5 star hotel, and yet this place is affordable and ideally located near the centre of Lahad Datu and close to Danum Valley. The tours the run are top notch and there is nothing they wouldn't do for you to make sure your holiday is perfect.

The last night of our staying at Bike and Tours I was told by my girlfriend, a seasoned traveler with over a decade of experience, that it was the best place she’d ever stayed in her life. And I’ve got all the reasons to believe her cause I had similar feelings.

It is hard to find as helpful, delicate and sociable persons as Simon and Tisha proved to be. You don’t feel like you’re staying at a guesthouse or a hotel but at your friend’s place. We loved everything: the food, the attitude, the chill-out music in the lobby, our room, the table talks which would not end till the night gets old and many other big and little things that made our stay at Bikes and Tours so special.

Danke schön, Simon!
Terima kasih, Tisha!

P.S. It is very easy to find the place if you are driving from Sandakan: just follow the main road and once you’ve seen the airport you should start watching for a yellow tyres store (my guess it was Dunlop) on a junction on the right. Make the right turn and then drive straight around 200 meters watching for the Bike and Tours sigh on the right.

be sure to stay with Tisha & Simon. Their attention to detail is second to none, the food they presented in their candle lit garden was scrumptious and both Tisha & Simon made very sure everything was to our liking. I had come in the hope that we could get information on the research centre at Danum Valley. They were able to make a phone call to someone who agreed to open the office (although Saturday morning) and we were driven, for a reasonable fee, by Simon in his truck to the centre, pointing out interesting sights along the way.

They were able to find a way for me to travel from Sipadan by bus instead of taxi - so very thoughtful and kind. I'm sorry I missed by birthday with them (they'd even gone to the trouble of getting a cake : )

Every need was met with a genuine smile and helpful information; in conclusion, i cannot recommend this home stay enough!

Room Tip: There are two rooms, both equally clean and fresh.

This small homestay exceeded all expectations. Trish and Simons hosting skills were without doubt, worthy of any high class hotel. Every single need was catered for, before you even had to ask.

On arrival we were shown to our room and given a welcome snack of spring rolls and a fresh iced mint drink. The rooms are very comfortable and immaculately clean. It's a shared bathroom with the other guest room but that wasn't an issue in any way. Complimentary shaving foam, razors, ear buds, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, all included.

I was travelling with a friend and we had dinner which comprised of a home cooked Malay Indian meal. Set out on a banana leaf were 3 different curries, riaita, chutney, corn fritters, fish. It was one of the tastiest curries I had ever had.

We wanted to go to Danum Valley Field Centre and, by the time we arrived for breakfast everything had been arranged for us, including persuading the woman to open the office on a Saturday. Simon drove us down to Danum Valley as there was no public transport. Nothing was too much effort.

Great wifi, always a bonus when you're planning a trip.

This lovely couple cannot be praised enough!!!! Thank you for a wonderful stay x

Room Tip: There are only 2 rooms, both with double beds. I stayed in a bed with a girl I had met 3 days prior...
