“Excellent Country Hotel”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

My wife and I, together with my brother and sister plus spouses, booked to stay at this hotel from 12-15 April 2013.

Any hotel is really tested when things go wrong, which they did for us! During the first night my brother had a nasty turn. The hotel's night staff, who I believe have some first aid experience, were quick to attend. In the event no ambulance was needed. However, on the following morning, we decided that my brother ought to be checked out at hospital. The hotel phoned Warwick Hospital ahead of his arrival. The eventual diagnosis was reassuring.

During the following night my wife went down with an unrelated problem. Again the hotel's night staff were soon on the scene. Next morning we two decided we needed to get back home, a day earlier than planned. The hotel were very understanding and cancelled our third night. In addition they cut the dinner bill for all six of us by 50%, even though none of our troubles was their fault.

This generous gesture, together with the other trouble they had taken on our behalf, makes this a hotel we are most happy to recommend.

My partner and I bought a Groupon deal for this hotel and I'm really glad we did. We had the most relaxing time away. The hotel is very close (7 miles) to Stratford (a beautiful town) where we had booked to see a Shakespeare play. We arrived late but it was no problem having our evening meal which was part of the voucher. The food was lovely. Our room was in the new part of the hotel - it was big, spacious and had everything we needed. The bed was extremely comfortable at least for me (I like a soft bed). There was some lovely touches i.e. choc, hot choc and marshmallows in our room as well as 2 dressing gowns and slippers. The hotel has a gym and a good size pool. However we did not bring our swim wear so only used the gym. We also did some light jogging around the lovely grounds of the hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful especially 'Alan' who gave us some great tips about getting to Stratford, parking and restaurants etc.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and I hope to return again when I want to see another Shakespeare's play. I've had some mixed experiences with Groupon deals but this one was excellent. Forgot to mention breakfast - plenty of choice and at weekends it opens till 11am (a real bonus).

Hotel rooms modern, clean and well styled. Good value and lovely countryside setting. Convenient for Hidcote gardens. The rooms are very warm. A flying visit but made to feel welcome and helpful check-in.

The picture on website which shows the old building looks great but most of the hotel is a modern brick build, the kind of thing you'd expect at a Travelodge etc. We found the room too hot for our liking even with the radiator turned off and the window open. The restaurant staff were really friendly and we had a lovely chat with a South African guy from Johannasburg, the same couldn't be said for the lady that 'greeted' up at reception.
One word of warning. I looked at prices via various websites and then phoned Ettington Chase direct to see if they could offer a lower price than going via a third party website. I thought I was getting a double room for two nights for a total of £105. However on arrival I was informed that it was £105 per night which was considerably more than if I'd booked via a third party website. My advice would be to get email confirmation if you think you've been offered what appears to be a good deal.

Don't be fooled by building photograph on website. This houses reception and a library the rest is bland architecturally dull 80's fare!

Hotel is clean and except for restaurant staff are professional and helpful.

Food on whole was good but service for evening dinner was atrocious. There were six of us and only three meals were delivered simultaneously, there was then a gap of 30 minutes before the other three (all steaks) were delivered to the table! Potatoes were soggy and the carrots were more warm raw than al dente!

At lunch the following day the table setting was two short!

Don't expect too much from location either: it is 7 miles from Stratford but taxis not cheap, no convenient public transport and setting is a particularly bland area of south Warwickshire just off M40. OK at right rates for business travellers but there are far better options in area for personal trips and weddings!

Room Tip: Don't pay more than £80 for double and don't expect picturesque landscape.

Thank you for your review following your recent stay. Sorry to read of your poor experience in the restaurant and I hope the team resolved this issue in a satisfactory manner for you on the evening. The 'Old House' also has 7 executive bedrooms and 2 junior suites which can be reserved for a small upgrade charge either at the time of booking or upon arrival if available. Whilst we are 6 miles from Stratford there is a regular bus service from the village into to the town centre and we are 10 miles from the M40 and also a short drive into the Cotswolds. I hope you choose to stay with PH Hotels again in the future.
Kind regards
Stuart

I stayed over the weekend for a wedding. Location was beautiful and very peaceful, as the hotel is in the middle of the countryside. Sat nav went a bit crazy when trying to get to the hotel. Pictures of the hotel look amazing as they show you the old part of the hotel. What they do not show you is the horrible new extension that has been added on to house the function rooms and accommodation.

The rooms are basic and do feel a bit dated compared to the rest of the hotel. The mattress needed replacing as it seems as if the springs had gone down the middle, as a result we kept rolling to the centre of the bed and did not sleep at all.

The morning after, there did not seem to be enough staff in to deal with the breakfast rush, we were waiting around for at least 10mins to be seated for breakfast before anyone even acknowledged us, then had to wait to be seated. Once we were seated the table had not been set up. There seemed to be a good variety for breakfast - although the majority of the plates were empty or half empty and it was not near the end of service.

Hotel served the purpose that we were there for but I would not choose it or a quiet weekend away as the wedding guests use the same bar facilities and seating area as other guests and there is no warning about this.

The hotel is over priced for what it actually is and what you get, we won't be staying there again in a hurry.

Thank you for your feedback following your recent stay. Sorry you were not impressed with our standard accommodation but we do have several upgrade options available both in the 'Old House' and hotel building. Whilst the main bar area can be become busy in the evenings there is always the option to ulitise the library in the Old house to relax in as this will invariably be quieter than the public areas adjacent to the function rooms.

Kind regards
Stuart

I stayed at this hotel for one night inclusive of breakfast and dinner (two course) with Groupon. Bedroom was roomy and the bathroom average size. All areas were clean and lots of surfaces in addition to bedside tables. There was a writing desk an a sideboard on which the television was placed. I was able to put my bag, jewellery, etc. There was also a small coffee table in front of a armchair. The wardrobe was very small yet jam packed with hangers that fell as you tried to squeeze your clothes in. The tea making facilities were inside the warobe as was a safe.

There was a special menu for voucher holders, very limited. I did not enjoy the food mainly because it was lukewarm. My partner hated his orange and carrot soup which he said left a horrible after taste i his mouth. Uninspired by the food I did not go down for breakfast.

There was a fitness centre with swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna but I did not use them so I cannot comment. The staff were business like but gave service with a smile.

Would I go back perhaps not in a hurry.

Room Tip: Room 228 on the first floor was nicely positioned for the lift ad views over the countryside okay.
