“Tropical living at its best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2012

Back from our round trip to Bocas del Toro and Las Lajas in Panama we decided to spend our last nights somewhere in the CR caribbean coast. After some internet research we found this place near the town of Puerto Viejo and booked Casita del Rio a two bedroom (plus loft) cottage kind of a tree house. Once there we were grately surprised to find such a nice, clean and charming bungalow in such a beatiful and peaceful tropical setting. We had some amazing time at La Finca Chica, the house was fully equipped and we loved the outdoors open living plan. The gardens are gorgeous and we could watch the howler monkeys and toucans in the early mornings up in the trees next to our bungalow. Jenny, the owner, a beautiful young local lady, is extremely sympathetic and helpful and so were the rest of the staff. Special thanks to the cleaning ladies that would face with a smile our daily chaos and disorder. We enjoyed very much the beach near Finca Chica. Two small rivers come together to the ocean to form a natural whitewater lagoon right on the beach. We also found very convenient the grocery store located within walking distance from Finca Chica. We had a big blast and will be back for sure!!

Room Tip: Casita del Rio is an excellent choice when travelling with friends and/or kids.

We booked La Finca Chica for the last week of our round trip through Costa Rica. It was a great stay. Our house was the 2 person bungalow. It was daily cleaned and beds were ok. The room is simple, the kitchen is decently equipped (Water Boiler, Toaster, Blender, Coffee maker, stove, fridge). There are some animals walking around. The rooster is locked up, so it didn't bother me in the early morning :).

Service was particularly good. The owners really like having their guests and were very helpful in finding the way around. We got some fruit samples from their own garden.

La Finca Chica is located a bit out of town, so rental bikes or a rental car are recommended. The good part is that the nicest beach in the neighbourhood (Punta Uva) is also twice as close as it would be when staying in Puerto Viejo.

We had a lovely stay at Finca Chica with our 20 month old baby. It is a beautiful place and very close to a grocery store and beach (10 minute walk). We really enjoyed the open air living space - the dining room and living room are open air but well covered so we had shade on the sunny days and stayed dry when it rained. We rented bikes to get around and it is not far to lots of different beaches, restaurants and activities like the botanical gardens. It was great to have our own kitchen and a large private space. If we return to Costa Rica we will definitely stay at Finca Chica! Thank you!

La Finca Chica was paradise. The house was breathtaking, in fact all the homes on the property were lovely and they are all nicely spaced from each other that you can keep your privacy. We rented Casa Lagarto, it was great! The open air living room was heaven, we would sit every evening and enjoy the surrounding nature. Birds, Howler monkeys, ducks, even a Peccary scurried across the grounds. The garden is fantastic and well maintained, everything is well maintained! The owners do everything they can to make your stay enjoyable, even if that is giving you your privacy. There is no air conditioner, but they do provide you with floor fans, they do a good job, but ceiling fans would have been nice in the bedroom. The place was cleaned daily and the girls were very polite, even when we were just lazing around the casa. The kitchen is well stocked and there is a nice market just down the road along with a little restaurant Johanna's. There is a nice beach across the road, but we ventured to Punta Uva (it is a great calm beach where you can rent chairs).

I would definitely recommend La Finca Chica, you WILL NOT be dissappointed. I even thought it would be a nice place to have a family gathering with 4 different size homes to spread out. If we are ever back in this part of Costa Rica, I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Warning: Driving in Costa Rica can be tricky... it is not impossible, but I recommend obtaining some sort of GPS device, either one from the rental car or a smart phone app. They do not have addresses, like we do in the US, so finding your way in San Jose or Limon can be difficult, but we managed just fine with our GPS... SO PLEASE IF YOU RENT A CAR GET ONE! YOU WILL NEED IT! But do not let this discourage you from driving, The highway roads are fine, cities are kind of potholly, but the freedom of having a car was nice, just be careful...we were fine!

Room Tip: Read other reviews and read several. People have different standards so you need to make sure you ha...

We had the privilege of staying at La Finca Chica. I can not describe how perfect the accommodation was. Firstly the short drive to the house was just right, but we were then met by a beautiful peacock and the friendly owners. Who then took us to the house which was immaculate, well maintained and has everything you will need (and cleaned daily). But that is just the start. Waking up every morning and opening the windows to complete paradise. The abundance of wild life was truly amazing. All the animals we wanted to see were right out the window including sloths, toucans, chipmunks, iguanas and an abundance of birds. Not only this but the owners animals were well looked after and indeed loved including ducklings, peacocks and dogs. It truly was paradise, the flowers amazing (especially for photographers). The location is fantastic close enough to town, only a short walk to the supermarket, soccer field, bike hire and my favorite, the beach. The owners were extremely accommodating and pleasant, in fact we were lucky enough to have a tour of the property by the owners children who were truly divine and educating. We in fact spent a majority of our time at the property as it was so beautiful and extremely private. My only regret was not staying longer. I can not recommend La Finca Chica enough, truly a memorable experience. You wont regret it!!!!!!! Many thanks to the owners for an amazing place to stay you are doing a fantastic job.

Room Tip: All houses were fantastic it depends on your budget

We have been going to the Costa Rica Caribbean coast for 8 years and have tried and seen many places. This is by far the best "bang for the buck", friendly, secluded, safe and convenient to beaches, groceries, restaurants and bus service. We recommend it without hesitation and we have sent many friends and relatives there. Everyone has loved it and would return if given a chance. It will comfortably accommodate singles, couples, partners and families of any age from the very young to the elderly retired looking for a tropical refuge in a spacious garden. The houses are well designed ,built and maintained and the service is efficient prompt and courteous.
The owners (Emilio and Jenny) are the kind of hosts we all wish for--they leave you alone and yet take care of your every need including seasoned and sage advice on what are good tourist attractions and which restaurants.serve the best food.
You will not be disappointed---my wife and I guarantee it!!

Room Tip: Pick the right size house for your needs and don't stay here if you are looking for air conditio...

We arrived in Puerto Viejo just after Easter for our last nights in Costa Rica before heading back home. We decided to take our time and check out several Hotels and B&Bs before making our decision as we wanted something very special for our farewell to Costa Rica. La Finca Chica was the winner of our little contest. The accommodation offered in most of the places we visited was just a small bungalow quite close to some others or a room in a house, door to door with some of the other guests or even with your hosts. Almost all the people we met in the area seemed to be very nice and friendly but privacy was a must for us. At La Finca Chica we found just what we were looking for: Privacy and quietness and a secluded location next to some pristine tropical beaches. There are just a few bungalows in this large property far away one from the other across a beautiful tropical garden. We rented # 3, Casa Lagarto. Every detail in this outstanding cottage has been carefully designed and taken care of, The house is extremely well equipped. We were surprised to find stainless steel pots and pans amongst a lot of other ammenities. The mattresses, pillows and linens were perfect and we slept like babies the whole time we were there. Cleaning service is provided on a daily basis and the cleaning ladies were very sympathetic and accommodating same as the owners and the rest of the staff. We can't say enough about Jenny and her family. They were so friendly and helpful always giving good advice on where to go and what to do, recommending restaurants and making reservations for tours and activities in the area. We want to thank all of them for these very special and relaxing last days of our vacations in Costa Rica. We highly recommend La Finca Chica as the perfect place to stay if you’re planning to visit the Caribbean coast!
