“Caribe Town - Casa Gecko in March 2013”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

My wife and I spent 30 days in Casa Gecko, an offsite house managed and next to Caribe Town. I will comment on both Caribe Town and Casa Gecko:

Caribe Town is ideally located in relation to the beach and the nearest town, Puerto Viejo. The walk to the beach takes just a few minutes. Caribe Town is located just West of the road that links Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. The access road to Caribe Town was improved during our stay, so there is no longer an issue with mud puddles. There are several restaurants and stores nearby. My wife and I used bicycles provided by Caribe Town for transportation (formerly owned by guests, Rick & Peggy, mucho gracias). Riding to Puerto Viejo is easily accomplished, however, I would not recommend riding after dark, due to some aggressive drivers on the roads.

The staff at Caribe Town is first rate! As many have reviewed on TripAdvisor, Carlos, Jessica and Marc are friendly, informative and make every effort to accommodate your comfort and needs. They epitomize the nature and meaning of pura vida. Although we stayed in an offsite casa, we were treated as onsite guests. Our rental did not include breakfasts, but they were delicious, so we paid to eat at the resort on many mornings. Laundry, cleaning and maintenance needs were handled professionally and expeditiously.

Although we booked our house through the previous management company, we believe that we were very fortunate to stay there with Caribe Town managing the property.

Casa Gecko is located approximately 50 meters West, up the road from the Caribe Town Resort. The house is was everything we expected it to be and it was hard to leave. Our favorite things at the house were relaxing in the two hammocks, listening to the surf and playing cards at the downstairs outdoor dining table.

The house is well maintained, clean and modern. There was only two of us, but the house can accommodate many more. We never had a shortage of hot water. The bathrooms are comfortable and clean.

There are only a couple of recommendations I can suggest to make Casa Gecko even better:
- More comfortable mattresses for the upstairs beds. Although not uncomfortable, they are not the quality that many have become accustomed.
- An outdoor ceiling fan over the upstairs deck would be a wonderful addition.

Some have complained about privacy, noise and dogs. We found that privacy was acceptable, the noise was only a distraction on a few days (home improvements at the next house over) and the dogs are not nearly as loud as the birds and howler monkeys.

Overall, I can highly recommend Casa Gecko and Caribe Town. We would not hesitate to stay there again, and likely will.

I loved the staff here, they were very friendly , informative and accommodating .
The breakfast was served hot, fresh and just as ordered. Having hot coffee out at 7 was a nice service as well. Liked having the kitchen area to use and met lots of wonderful people in the common/pool/ eating area.
Loved the area we were in- especially the chocolate tour, massage/accupuncture with Helen, rafting tour and walks in to town.
Staff at caribe town were really helpful and informative . Set up our rafting trip and then perfect hotel arrangements for trip home.
I would recomend this accomidation for people who are looking for a laid back, authentic experience.
Thanks for a wonderful time !

We travel with two large dogs and it is difficult to find places that are pet friendly, however Caribbean town allowed us to stay with our dogs. We were here in 2011 for the first time and every time we go to the Caribbean this is the place were we stay.
The customer service is great since the 1st email and they (Carlos. Jessica and Marc) help us schedule our diving activities and land tours.
The bungalows are very nice, the vegetation is spectacular and the security is very good.

We loved the privacy of our bungalow surrounded by trees and gardens --it is very quiet at Caribe Town and relaxing. My husband and I enjoyed 8 days there. We loved the family-friendly atmosphere and spent our evenings around the pool and bar area getting to know other guests and learning about all the highlights of the area. The Jaguar Rescue Centre is within walking distance and is an interactive experience to learn about the jungle. We loved spending time with Jo and Pat (Jo owns a rental house managed by Jessica) as they are regulars at Caribe Town. A day on a fish boat watching dolphins was also a great experience and bathing in a waterfall about half an hour away was invigorating. The restaurants are wonderful and we tried many that were recommended but we always had the fabulous breakfast first thing in the morning, that Caribe Town offers. We found the staff (especially Carlos) very attentive and cheerful. The rooms are clean, the beach is close and we would return without hesitation.
My only suggestion would be some hooks or an area to hang clothes up in the bungalow. There is good shelf space and Jessica and Mark are diligently trying to upgrade the facility all the time. It is a real treasure. You need a bike to go to Puerto Viejo if you are in a hurry as it is approximately 2 km away, unless you are an avid walker. As we had rented a car, my husband and I didn't find this a problem. This area (Cocles) is charming and safe and I'm glad we chose to stay close to Puerto Viejo, but not in it. Thanks again Marc and Jessica for a lovely vacation!

Room Tip: Not being used to the heat, I'm glad we had A/C--Bungalows 4 and 5 offer this.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights. We wanted to start our honeymoon off by staying somewhere off the beaten path, south of Puerto Viejo. We arrived after a long travel day, exhausted and ready to get settled. Carlos was waiting for us when we arrived around 7:30pm. His big smile and warm demeanor were a welcome sight, as were the beers he cracked for us the moment we mentioned we could use one! :-) Check in was a breeze, with Carlos showing us to our room and giving us the rundown of the place right away. We felt completely at home from the moment we arrived.

Our casita was tucked away, surrounded by beautiful jungle flora. We were thrilled at the set up- our front porch had a hammock and a bench which we used to enjoy our morning coffee and down time during the day. The casita was spacious and clean, with lots of room for our bags, and a nice, big shower. The bed was very comfortable- we slept like rocks every night!

The bar/pool area was great. We spent our first morning floating at the pool bar, enjoying some blended drinks after an amazing breakfast!

Jessica and Carlos were very helpful with directions and recommendations for activities, etc.

The location of the property was great. Located about 4 minutes by taxi from Puerto Viejo, it was convenient for biking into town (about 15 minutes), but far enough away to enjoy the peacefulness that comes with being a bit removed from the reggae/surfer/party nightlife of Puerto. Playa Cocles was directly across the street from the end of the road Caribe Town is located on. The beach was beautiful. Soft sand, nice waves, and mostly deserted!

All in all, we found Caribe town to be a gem of a place, and are so grateful to have been able to spend some time there!

Thank you Jessica and Carlos for being the best hosts!! We will be back for certain! :-)

My husband and I stayed at Caribe Town in bungalow 4 for our honeymoon. We stayed there for 13 nights. Jessica, Marc and Carlos are extremely accommodating and lovely people. They live onsite and are always available to answer questions. The tours that were arranged by Jessica and Carlos were spectacular - highly recommended. Breakfast was great and always ready with coffee at 7 am. The pool area was fantastic and though the pool is small we loved it to have a quick cool dip after a hot day. There is an area for massage - try the chocolate massage! We rented bikes the whole time. Caribe Town is near plenty of restaurants - tons to choose from. There are plenty of beaches and great walks to take nearby. Overall - a spectacular vacation. Pura Vida!
