We booked a hotel in kata hoping it would be a calmer cleaner place the. Patong.. Boy were we surprised when we came here!! Lets start with the dirty dirt stains everywhere from the hall ways to our hotel room!! I wish I could post pictures because words cannot describe how dirty our room and bathroom is here!! If we didn't arrive so late we would left right away and the hotel "concierge" said its booked so there is nothing they can do until the next day. He wouldn't even send new sheets bc we felt so gross we didn't believe they clean anything. There is paper work from the previous occupants!!! The smell is unbearable in the elevator and the room... This place is truly truly disgusting!! Do not stay at the sugar palms resort!!

Ps as an added bonus the AC barely works...

The resort is across the street from Kata beach and down a side street with the best restaurants and spas in the area. You also have a couple of Pubs which are very reasonably priced. I have stayed here a few times now and the service and quality is consistently very good. The rooms are clean and beautiful with amazing bathrooms better than some 5 star hotels that I have stayed. They also have a full breakfast buffet every morning which also has the omlet station which I enjoyed. The swimming pool is the right temperature and is not so deep everywhere so the kids can come in also. This hotel also picked me up from the airport when I arrived which was convienent. I just had to look for a man holding a sign with my name.

Room Tip: Rooms around the pool on the first floor have a patio up against the pool.

We landed at Phuket on 30th and we had booked Sugar Palm on Hotels.com. We landed there only to be told that we have to pay Rs.20,000 etc for a programme that they were going to conduct on 31st night. This apparently was mandatory and we couldn't have a room in the hotel without coughing up an extra 20k and attending a programme we knew nothing about. Hotels.com had already charged us for the room so it was difficult for us to cancel and get a refund so we ended up paying this huge amount. And guess what the programme was simply pathetic and vulgar to say the least. We just had dinner and all the other people who stayed in the hotel and who just like us had been forced to attend the programme, left after dinner within an hour like by 8 pm to do something else as no one wanted to ruin their new year eventhough they had paid 20k for the programme. That's how pathetic it was. We also had a lot of problem with the wifi not working here. I wouldnt recommend this hotel simply because they pulled a fast one on us with the fine print

The only good thing about this hotel is that it is 5 minutes walk to the beach. The staff are unhelpful, unfriendly and indifferent. The first room we were given was above their restaurant and at night, all you could hear was the loud music coming from their Tuk Tuk bar, and the shower smelt like someone had urinated in it. After many phone calls, they eventually moved to us another room. It was quieter until, we realised that there was no soundproofing so we could hear every footstep of the people above us. The rooms are very tired looking, as is the hotel itself. The breakfasts are really poor, the selection of food is bad, as is the quality, hence why we didn't even bother trying their Mali Restaurant. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone, for the price you pay to stay here, you can definitely find better in Kata.

Bad first impressions on arrival. Indifferent attitude of staff, room full of mosquitos and wifi not working in the room.

The furniture and every surface throughout the hotel is tired, smudged, scratched and worn. This kind of thing can be overlooked if the staff display any kind of warmth, politeness or willingness to help. In a place like Thailand where you get amazing genuine smiles and polite sawatdees everywhere you go from the banks to restaurants to street vendors, the attitude of sugar palm staff stood out even more as a disgrace.

Ultimately the place is OK...you get shelter and air con. But the only difference between sugar palm's 7500 baht a night and a 600 baht a night joint (with friendlier service) is a pool.

I would be less inclined to complain if they didn't put themselves in this price bracket only to provide an at best, average, and in some aspects very poor experience.

I leave today disappointed, and do not recommend to others.

Sugar Palm was a great find in Phuket. It's nestled in a little enclave along a quiet street literally seconds from the beach. We arrived after a VERY long train + bus + tuktuk journey under-rested, starving, irritable, and dirty. The friendly staff welcomed us and gave us cool washcloths and cold berry tea while we processed everything at the (outdoor!) front desk. Our room was gorgeous with modern furnishings and a fantastic view. The rooms are arranged in a U around the pool; since we had a corner we had a view of the pool/beach on one side and the "big Buddha" mountainside on the other. The pool is great and always at a good temperature (of course we went in June when it was approximately 1000 degrees outside so anything felt good at that point). There are computers with internet to use as well as mini-trips the staff arranges - we took a snorkeling morning trip to one of the small islands on a speedboat. It was a lot of fun and very easy to arrange with their staff... we also arranged a convenient airport shuttle with them when it was time to leave. We didn't try the restaurant (is there even one? I can't remember) but opted for the little restaurant just outside the hotel and the convenient 7-11 next door for snacks and goodies. Sugar Palm is a great spot, and I would definitely book again! - Traveled in June 2009 (not '12 but I couldn't submit the review without picking something, sorry!)

Room Tip: Ask for a pool-facing room if possible

Good location as 5 min walk to the beach which was on the flat - a bonus for me as I don't manage hills. We found miserable staff apart from the girl who did the eggs at breakfast. The breakfast was worth the extra we paid. The room was large with a comfortable bed, not enough storage but that's not a problem really. We did have a hotel robe removed from our room the day before leaving which we complained about as they have a steep price list of things 'borrowed' - so we felt as if we'd been set up a bit.

Room Tip: You need a pool view as some of the other rooms had tiny balconies overlooking nothing.
