“Well maintained hotel, service to be improved!”
Reviewed April 11, 2014 via mobile

The hotel is really nice, well maintained, amazing rooms, beautiful bathroom and shower! location is ok. On top of an hill between Karon and Kata, if you can't drive a motorbike and don't like to walk, avoid this hotel.

But what to say about the service at the hotel, a real disappointment, from the reception ladies to the maid, there is a real improvement that needs to be done!

The cleaning ladies didn't cleaned our balcony for almost a week until we asked to, the room was not clean properly everyday.

All our requests at the reception where just answered with a simple "no".. from motorbike/car renting, to tuk tuk service to the beach or Kata center to miscellaneous request, always with the smile, but always in a negative way without more assistance!

On average, yes for the infrastructure of the hotel, green, beautiful but no for the service or the staff! We won't go there anymore for the price!

The Aspasia is located at the very northern tip of Kata beach. Kata has grown to be a little too busy for my taste - it is definitely not the quiet beach I saw when I visited the first time 17 years ago. However, the Aspasia escapes it all. It is a very steep climb both up to the hotel as well as down to the beach, but you'll be rewarded with peacefulness and magnificent views. A climb down, and you have lots of massage shops, restaurants, cafes, shops and nightlife to choose from - as well as the beautiful Kata beach.

The rooms are huge, and I believe they all share the same magnificent views. We had a kitchen with our room, which was nice for preparing snacks for our growing kids who constantly get hungry outside family meal times.

Breakfast buffet is not huge, but with a great variety including delicious Italian cold cuts, eggs in any variety as well as Asian fare.

There is a lap pool in front of the building to the far left and a fitness centre that just has the basics that you need if you feel like keeping fit during your stay (although the climbs up and down the hills might already fulfil that purpose).

If you want to do more than just lie on the beach and go out at night, renting a car on Phuket is a good option. Traffic is crazy, but manageable, and Phuket has a lot more to offer.

We stayed in March 2014 as part of our honeymoon in Thailand. The hotel is beautiful, sitting on a hillside overlooking the beach. The staff were very pleasant and courteous, the pool areas and gardens were beautifully kept. We emailed in advance having read reviews about connecting doors between rooms, as this obviously wasn't ideal on our honeymoon! On arrival we had been upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite, there was a connecting door in the living room but not the bedroom. We didn't hear our neighbours at all. The hotel was a good base for exploring the area. The pool was never too busy.

A few things could have improved our stay. First, the hill! We are pretty fit and managed the very steep hill up to the hotel but if travelling with older people or children this would have been a problem. The neighbouring hotels (peach hill resort and Avista) both had guest transportation down to the beach - surely this could be shared or some arrangement could be made? The alternative path down to the beach (through the garden) is very dirty and muddy in places and covered in litter, not good in flip flops! I understand this land probably doesn't belong to the hotel but it is very off putting, we used the path once and never again! Lastly, the restaurant was very quiet except at breakfast. If it had of offered some kind of deal or better value we would have eaten there more. Surely it is better to lower the prices slightly and have the service used than have all the staff standing around doing nothing.

At the bottom of the hill there is a little travel agency next to the massage and tattoo shops. The girls name is Noi and she was extremely helpful and honest. We would highly recommend booking any excursions with her. She even got us a great deal on our taxi back to the airport. We also recommend the coffee club nearby for clean, well priced and air conditioned meals!

In summary, we enjoyed the hotel, the setting is beautiful and the staff were great. We would stay here again if the above improvements were made.

The resort is on a steep hillside so the views from the rooms are beautiful. We had a lovely, spacious and comfortable room on the top floor. Quite a few steps to climb, so not for the unfit! Lovely split-level pool area, never crowded during our stay. The staff are very courteous and helpful. Buffet style breakfast in the open dining room was fine, but we hardly saw anyone having lunch or dinner here during our stay, probably due to the much more varied and cheaper options nearby. There is direct access to the beach down steep steps through the jungle, but at the bottom you must cross a foul-smelling stream, although it almost disappears at low tide. There is a lovely little beach bar/restaurant at the end nearest the resort, but the beach becomes more crowded the further along you go.

Just one big negative to the accommodation. There was a very large and very thin connecting door between our room and next door. Luckily our neighbours were relatively quiet, but even so we could hear every word plus the TV. If your neighbours have screaming kids and watch loud TV all night this could seriously spoil a holiday and is a major design fault in an otherwise pleasant resort.

Just returned from our stay in this great condominium hotel in Phuket's Kata Beach. Our room overlooked the sea which gave us a stunning view and the accommodation was absolutely lovely - a massive sitting area with kitchen and beautiful bedroom.
We found the staff SO friendly and appreciative of any attempt we made to use the Thai language. We frequently used the restaurant who provided a choice of meals that were by far superior to that available in the main shopping area with prices that we found to be incredibly cheap when you compared to what we pay at home.
The hotel's spa offered great value massages and the two swimming pool areas were excellent and so well looked after.
Like other people, we struggled with the hill to the hotel and would strongly recommend they offer transport like the other hotels close by. We also made use of the hotel to transport us back to the airport and this was excellent and such good value. All in all a great stay.

We have just returned home from a fantastic holiday at the Aspasia, Kata Beach. We had a wonderful modern apartment with balcony and sea view. This comprised of a very comfortable bedroom. The aircon was brilliant and the bed super comfortable. I have a bad back and I slept so well in that bed! The spacious lounge had a very cool semi-circular kitchen at one end. Not used much though as we ate out all the time at the many eating places within walking distance. A favourite was the Fishermans Cafe overlooking the beach which served excellent white snapper and lots of non-fish dishes too. For an up-scale experience try lunch or dinner at the excellent Boathouse Restaurant (where I just had my 60th birthday) overlooking the central part of Kata Beach - fantastic soft white sand.

Reading some of the reviews I just cannot understand the adverse comments about the staff. They are so friendly and helpful. OK some do not speak much English but if you have patience with them they serve you so well and always with a smile. Breakfast comprises of an extensive buffet and also a cooked breakfast from an extensive menu - I just had bacon eggs and mushrooms but you could have omelettes , eggs benedict or pretty much what you want. You go up and order but then they serve it to your table. The poolman deserves special praise. As soon as you approach the pool he rushes to your help, finds you a bed, brings towels and makes sure you are in shade or sun as you prefer. When you go he collects the towels - no hogging beds all day when you are not there.

All in all a great hotel in a very nice resort

The hotel from the street side looks unassuming and more like an apartment block but we had to enter inside to fully appreciate its uniqueness.

The pictures used to advertise this lovely boutique hotel do it justice and accurately reflect the unique design and amazing location of the hotel. The architecture and colours connected us to a feeling of ancient Mayan temples while the incorporation of gardens everywhere possible reminded me of the hanging gardens of Babylon. The way the architect has spread the hotel over the hilltop on the cape blends the hotel and the jungle seamlessly.

One service that exceed our expectations was the free Wi-Fi. Available everywhere throughout the hotel, connectivity was simple and easy with a decent download speed. We have used free Wi-Fi in many places in our travels around Asia and usually resigned to mediocre levels of access but the Aspasia delightfully exceeded our past experiences.

Okay so that that was the good but now for some of the bad:

The hotel’s split level pool is fantastic and always inviting at the end of a long day but when we went swimming there was always an annoying thin film of oil or grease here and there around the pool. More so than on the upper level, the bottom level seemed to be affected by this and detracted from the refreshing swim we looked forward to.

The English language ability of the hotel staff is ILR Level 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ILR_scale) Suitable in most daily situations it is insufficient to deal with difficult situations where compromise and negotiation is required. The subtleties of the English language are beyond those that we had to deal with and we had to give up in frustration on several occasions and just smile politely and sort things out for ourselves without hotel assistance. All the staff are sweet and friendly and we harbor no ill feelings towards any of them but we certainly did not connect with any of them either.

We stayed in room 1815 which was described as a single bedroom suite but was actually part of a larger 2 bedroom suite, separated from the larger part by a very thin and not sound-proofed door. Although a modern and adequately appointed room with a magnificent view over the bay and the hillsides, our enjoyment was badly affected by the sound of our neighbours next door. They were not excessively loud but the thinness and in-appropriateness of the double door separating our two parts allowed everything they said and everything they watched on TV in their part to be heard by us in our part.

The hotel’s location in Kata Beach is both a benefit and a handicap. Sited on the top of highest hill at Kata Beach it is remote and quiet which is great after a day of busy activity but unfortunately the same hill makes it difficult to walk up and down. We regularly saw both young and old struggling to get down the hill to the Kata beach night life or up the hill to their hotels. As there was no courtesy shuttle bus the only alternative was to hire a Tuk-tuk which can be problematic, or a Scooter which can be dangerous.

Sadly, our room was cleaned daily to a barely satisfactory standard. There was always something amiss. Sometimes the coffee was replaced but not the tea bags. At times the bed was made correctly but at other times the duvet was laid incorrectly. There were occasions when there was an abundance of shampoos and toiletries but other times there was none. Quite regularly, sugar crystals we dropped were still left un-cleaned upon our return in the afternoons. I noted that during our entire stay at the Aspasia, our balcony never swept or re-set.

While we were there we never made use of their advertised massage service as we were told it was only available 1200-1400h daily and we felt the availability was too restrictive to be of any use. Ideally we thought this service should have been offered later in the day when weary sightseers return from their travels around Phuket.

The Aspasia advertises that they have scooters available for hire. This is not true. They only have one scooter to hire and sadly Aspasia did not offer to assist us with making arrangements for us to hire scooters outside the hotel. We finally found scooters for hire in Kata by ourselves but had to surrender our passports as a deposit guarantee for their hire. Not a comfortable feeling walking around without your passport. It is possible to find cash deposit guarantee scooters for hire but without assistance from the hotel staff we must have chosen the wrong way to go that morning.

Surprisingly would we recommend this hotel to others? Yes we could recommend this hotel to others so long as they don’t expect too much and try not to compare it with previous experiences in a large hotel chain. I found the Aspasia a great place to use as a home base, somewhere to sleep comfortably away from the craziness of Patong and the hustle and grind of daily sight-seeing. I would not consider this a five star Hotel and would rate it no more than a four star but it certainly is a beautiful and enchanting boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with a sea view.
