We were booked into another hotel in Karon and decided to stay less nights there and 2 nights in the Aspasia Hotel.
The hotel is beautifully located on a hill overlooking Kata beach. The reception area and whole hotel is of interesting architecture and design, which we liked. We were shown to our rooms which blew us away. The rooms were massive and we were booked into the top floor sea view room at the end of one of the hotel's wings. The room is extremely spacious with a big balcony with a wonderful view accross the bay. Full height glass sliding folding doors can open completely to the balcony. The room was very clean and it was nice to have such a big spacious room with everything we needed. One thing in the room that we didn't like was the interleading door, as on the second day people moved into the room next to us and we could hear all their movements. But still this did not detere from our experience at the hotel.

The rest of the hotel is very nice. The first evening we decided to eat at the hotel's restaurant and, as we were the only people in the restaurant, got good service and the food was very nice. It was a bit expensive, but we wanted to eat a decent meal. We had starters and for mains had crayfish which was wonderful. We also booked a 2 hour combo massage for a couple. This was probably the highlight of our stay at the hotel. The spa itself was wonderful and the massage made us totally relax. An hour body-scrub followed by an hour massage. We felt like jelly afterwards.

The walk from the hotel to Kata beach is a bit treacherous. They can actually do something about it, as it is next to a stream which is littered and not smelling very nice.

But all in all we enjoyed our stay at the hotel thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone. That said it is definitely not 5 star, so don't expect that. Maybe there are better hotels in the vicinity?

Aspasia is built on the side of a hill and as a result has beautiful views, unique layout and looks quiet stunning. But it is also the reason why it is not a suitable place to stay for a lot of people, the rooms are on so many different levels with lots of steps everywhere,to get from our room to the pool involved stairs, corridor, lift down and three further flights of stairs. To get to the beach meant climbing down more steps from the pool and a rocky walk downhill. I like to keep fit and think all exercise is good but it just meant you would definitely think twice before running back to your room if you forgot anything!
The rooms are very spacious with very large balconys, nicely decorated and clean (sometimes there is that smell of sewage which seems to be everywhere in Thailand). There are a lot of outdoor areas within the hotels and it almost felt like we had our own villa as opposed to a room.
We had breakfast daily overlooking the pool and beach which was really good and service was excellent. We had lunch and room service a few times and all the food was great.
There are a lot of hotels to choose from and it really does depend on what kind of holiday you want, the Aspasia suited us, it was very quiet and peaceful, the beach is nice, moderately busy but definitely not hectic and Kata which is only a few mins walk away (down v steep hill-too steep to walk back with kids) is nowhere near as crazy as patong but still has lots shops, restaurants etc.
It is rated a five star hotel and though it may not be quiet as luxurious as some five star resorts in the Middle East for example
I felt it deserved its rating.

Loved the Aspasia. From the moment we stepped in the lobby we had a great feeling about the hotel. Warm welcome from the reception and the lobby had the most stunning view.....it was difficult to find the rooms in Aspasia though as there are no signs to show you how to go to the room but after awhile you get your own way I guess. Views from rooms are just fantastic. We were first in a deluxe room but due to the design (we could hear EVERY SINGLE WORD SPOKEN next door) we requested to change room and got an upgrade (girl from reception was not being helpful first and asked for extra money but we stood firm) the other room was great as well.
The hotel was in a very very good location and it took about 10 minutes to go Kata Beach (it's got the finest sand!)
Nice swimming pool and great food from the restaurant (breakfast, lunch and dinner all fantastic!) staff very very friendly....really can't wait to go back!

Location is ok, but there are other hotels nearby not on a steep hill. Being fairly fit it was not a difficult walk but annoying after the first few times and the last thing I wanted to do at the end of a long hot day.

Rooms are large but dated, a little bit of paint and replacing some stained cushions would make all the difference. The interconnecting doors allow you to hear everything in the next room, funnily enough I could hear our neighbours saying they could hear everything we were saying.

Service was hit or miss, the restaurant staff were great but checking in and out was a chore.

Would definitely not recommend this hotel, it's over priced and there are so many better alternatives for the same price or less.

Kevin - Singapore

My wife & I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in Nov 2007. We rented the Seaview 1 bedroom suite. The room was very spacious. Furnishing was average to above average. Facilities in the room was good enough - there was a separate shower, jacuzzi (which took a long time to fill up but not really quite 2-hours), his & hers wash basins, 2 toilets, living room with sofa set (which we didn't use), 2 balconies overlooking the sea (though view was hedged by the forest), kitchen (which we didn't use) and fridge. Yes, the inter-connecting door allowed me to hear my neighbour watching tv and to smell his cigarette smoke (they should separate smoking and non-smoking patrons).

The hotel itself is small (the restaurant, business centre, bar and wine shop are basically in 1 place). Being small, it means there are few rooms, hence few patrons. We loved the serenity of the entire place, albeit some minor construction works going on in the presidential suite (which I'll stay in future). Breakfast was a good spread. The restaurant was never crowded - food was readily available. The staff were always waiting on you and being in a non-airconditioned restaurant, they always had the common sense to turn on the fans for patrons. The spa was good, the pool was superbly enticing and fancifully crafted. We swam in the evening and the water was warm!

We booked everything online (plane tickets, hotel, transfer - all last minute!). Checking-in was smooth and fast, staff were warm and friendly, place was exceptionally clean. Don't get off guard with laundry service - normal means 2 days, express means 1 day, not 2 or 3 hours.

On our last but 1 day, a minor construction accident happened and some dirty water splashed on me. This incident came to light at the front desk and they offered me to wash my dirty clothes foc. We had a free Thai dinner included in the package we purchased which we hadn't consumed yet. Upon knowing of the incident, the hotel manager apologised and instantly upped the dinner to their western candlelight dinner with wine as compensation!

3 mins down the road is the shopping area - I mean back alley bazaar type of shopping, not mall type of shopping. Very similar to Patong - no point going there. The way up to the hotel was quite treacherous but 1 consolation was the hotel was the highest point there and that area is a designated 'tsunami evacuation area'. So, another selling point for the hotel.

Shopping was entertaining. The only thing that spoilt the entire laid back picturesque scenery were occasional bare-bodied male tourists (from a particular part of the world which I shan't mention to avoid appearing being racist). They usually, if not always, had 6 or 8 of their ab muscles conglomerated into 1 huge ball or balloon, ever ready to pop! They were so baked they resembled lobsters, ready to be splashed with BBQ, black pepper or tom yam sauce! Thankfully, in the hotel, we had no such tourists.

Another amazing thing about the hotel was there were hardly any insects! No roaches, mosquitoes, bees, ants even! We only saw 2 - 3 house lizards, butterflies and birds. It was almost as though the hotel staff liaised with the insects so that only the good ones ahowed their faces! (ok, ok birds are not insects, I know).

We'll definitely visit Phuket again. We'll probably try another hotel the next time to experience something new or return to the Aspasia's presidential suite (if they offer me a good discount after writing this good review for them).

They did not mention that they are in the midst of heavy constructions. The distance from the shore is much far than5 minutes walk. One of their employees succeeded in stealing our camera. The pictures they put on the internet are misleading. the rooms are deffinetly ineficient and ugly

We booked this hotel through Late Stays and got a good deal (or so we thought) at 4500 baht per night.

We booked 4 nights in a Sea View Deluxe Room. We asked for a top floor room and this is what we were given.

When we arrived we were overwhelmed by the stunning flowers hanging from ever balcony. The gardens were really well kept. We had no trouble with the check in procedure and were given a cold towel and drink while we waited.

When we walked into our room we were really amazed by its size. It was the best hotel room we had ever had and the bathroom was stunning with his and hers sinks and the biggest shower I had ever seen. The view from our balcony was also stunning. The room had a very romantic feel and had downlighters with dimmers - excellent.

However, then we noticed the interconnecting door. My boyfriend has a bit of a phobia about these and went to reception to ask if they had a room without such a door. The answer was no, unless you book a 2 bedroom suite. The way the hotel appears to be laid out is that there are 2 rooms with a lounge in between. Each of the rooms has a door into the lounge which can be opened or locked, depending on what you book. In our case, we had just booked the room and the people next to us had the suite so there lounge was next to our bedroom. They also have doors to close off part of the balcony. This would be fine if the door was solid but it was like paper and we even got next doors cigarette smoke coming underneath.

We could hear every conversation they had next door (and more - but I won't go into that). One night they came in late (2.30am)and turned the TV on. We gave it 30 minutes but it was still on and keeping us awake. I went and knocked on their door but got no reply, so I rang reception to ask them to call the room and request that the TV be turned off. The man on reception told me that they were on honeymoon. I said I appreciated this but at 2.30am I thought it fair that they turn off their TV, especially in a 5* hotel. The man said he would call their room. We waited for the sound of the phone ringing but it never did. Eventually my boyfriend called reception again and the man on reception said he had called the room. He clearly hadn't because we would have heard it. I couldn't believe he would lie in this way! After my boyfriend asked for a new room so we could sleep he did eventually call their room and it turned out they had fallen asleep with the TV on. This element of the hotel's customer service was very disappointing, but in every other way it was excellent.

The pool area was very nice and the pool towels smelt really lovely. The breakfast was the most amazing spread we had had (this was included in the price) and ran from 7am - 11am.

We found the hotel to be in a perfect location. It was well away from the bars and nightlife, which was very busy and yet it really wasn't hard to walk to.

A number of people have criticised the walk to the beach. Yes, it is all up hill on the way back, but it isn't that bad. I wouldn't recommend it for people with disabilities, but the advantage of being on the side of the hill is the fab view.

The beach is long with lovely soft sand but the storm drain does make for poor visibility in the sea.

In our view, the best place to eat was a servery used by the locals. You go out of the hotel to the right and turn right at the bottom of the road. It's not a beautiful location and you have to sit on plastic chairs but the food is very quick and very good.

In our opinion, this hotel would be great for a group or four friends. You could book a 2 bed suite between you and (as long as you have similar sleeping habits) the room layout should be fine.
