“Paradise in Phuket”
Reviewed March 25, 2007

We have just returned from 11 nights at Kata Thani, it was wonderful.
This isn't going to be a high energy report of going here and there but a report for the relaxers of the world.
Kata Thani is a clean, comfortable (luxurious), efficient, friendly, well appointed and relaxing hotel. We stayed in a junior suite, plenty of room, massive bed, efficient air conditioning, bath with a view over the good size balcony. Storage more than adequate for 2 people includign cases out of the way, safe, mini bar and coffee/tea and of course the daily bottled water.
Each evening beach towels are delivered to your room with the obligatory flower on them (everything comes with a flower), oh and he sprayed the room with mostiquo spray.
Typical day - breakfast 9.30 - 10.00 (anything from curry to croissant, how do you like your eggs? sliced tropical fruit to die for); off to the sun loungers in the ample grounds under the palm trees, pool beds had the German AND RUSSIAN towel syndrome but because of the bulk of the beds they were immoveable; after basting all over move into the shade for a nap; into the pool but preferably the sea (100 yds max), like a tepid bath; after half an hour or so back to the lounger; maybe a massage from the girls wandering the ground, 300 bahts; time for a beer, hotel bar 140 bahts, beach bar (50 yds max) 60 bahts Singah, 50 bahts Chang, coke 30 bahts; at the end of this hectic day off to the hotel beach bar for happy hour at 5.30 for all cocktails 100 bahts; back for a shower and then off out to Kata Beach for a meal.
I should mention we went for a family wedding and the Kata Thani did it superbly. The couple's room was decorated with flowers (petal hearts on the bed, garlands etc, flowered arches onto the beach), crowned by a baby elephant to present a posy to the bride.

I was a bit hesitant to book at Katathani as i had read some of the reviews that didnt give it a good wrap but i am so glad i went ahead and booked. The resort is beautiful ( and i have stayed at many 5 stars resort throughout the world) and i can definately recommend it to others. My only advice would be to for go the package deals that include dinner as you can get very good and very cheap meals just outside the resort and even better if you want to head into Kata Central (150 baht by tuk tuk) or Patong Beach (350 baht by tuk tuk).
The staff at Katathani was very helpful and spoke english quite well. The breakfast was amazing with many tastes catered for. It is a resort that all kinds can enjoy both families, singles and older couples would have no probs enjoying the resort. My husband and i will definately be back as we have just found out we are having a baby i think this would be a great place to come for a family holiday as it was for a holiday just for the two of us. Dont read the bad reviews it is a great place to stay

My wife and I got married at the Katathani in January 2007. The whole experience was wonderful, we couldn’t have chosen a more idyllic place have our wedding. We’ve already decided to go back!

We’d booked a junior suite which looked fantastic in the brochure and which didn’t disappoint. The room had views over the impeccably kept gardens and of course the beautiful Kata Noi Beach and Andaman Sea. The room was a good size for the two of us, although not big enough for three adults according to other members of our party who had a similar room. The room was well appointed, with all the usual kit such as air-con, TV, mini bar, safe and huge bed, but none of that really mattered with such a wonderful view from the balcony. The bathroom was also a good size and had a walk in shower as well as a bath. Everything was really clean as you come to expect in this part of the world! However, the room did have a slight damp smell which was barely noticeable.

The resort is split into two parts with the Thani wing (which we were in) being on the beach front and the Bhuri wing being over the road and set back from the beach. Rooms in the Thani wing have excellent sea views and are more expensive because of this. The rooms in the Bhuri wing seem to be more modern but still of an adequate size.

The beach is fantastic - wonderful white sand and not too overcrowded unlike Patong and Karon! There is a charge for using the sun beds on the beach, but with plenty of free sun beds around the pool it’s not a problem. The swimming pools (I think there are six in total) which is where we spent most of our time are beautiful and very clean.

The breakfast was excellent, with food to suit all tastes. There was so much choice that you discovered something new each day! The breakfast restaurant is fairly large and offers great views across the gardens and beach while you eat your breakfast!

The food and drink in the resort is quite expensive compared to local restaurants and bars. Because of this we never ate in the resort. However, the hotel bars make the best cocktails particularly Kata Sunsets which are lovely! There are two restaurants outside the resort and one at the far end of the beach which serve good food at very good prices! For more variety, at trip to Kata is necessary, and is only a 15 minute walk or 5 minute tuk tuk ride (which costs about 100B) away. Once you have made this journey you will realise how perfectly located the Katathani is with peace and tranquillity on your door step and good bars and restaurants a short tuk tuk ride away. If you want more night life still, a trip to Patong is essential and will cost you about 350B by tuk tuk.

If you’re hungry at lunch time, you could do a lot worse than visit the pancake man. For 30B you can get a delicious banana, chocolate, raisin or just about any other flavour pancake. They’re very good, but he’s not always there when you want him! He normally parks between the Thani and Bhuri wings!

Excursions are much cheaper through local companies which you will find across the road from the hotel. We went on a trip to the Phi Phi islands by speed boat. This included a stop at Maya Bay, where the movie the Beach was filmed. The trip was excellent if you don’t mind a bumpy ride and great value!

We had a clear picture of what we wanted from our wedding before we arrived, and the staff (including our personal wedding coordinator) went out of their way to provide exactly what we wanted. We chose to have our wedding on the beach which had been our dream all along. We were amazed by how the hotel staff decorated the venue, with what seemed to be thousands of pink roses which looked perfect against the white sand of Kata Noi beach.

Katathani has one of the more expensive wedding packages (about £1600) but in actual fact it was worth every penny. The care and attention to detail was excellent and really made the day perfect! The only down side to getting married on the beach was that we had quite an audience of swimwear clad hotel guests which we hadn’t bargained for – they’re on most of our wedding photos!

All in all, Katathani was the perfect hotel for the perfect wedding.

Katathani is away from the shoping frenzy of Patong (20min away/400bht & Kata 5 min) and we love the serenity - Honeymoon & returned for our aniversary last month. Position is everything and the other comments regarding the mouldly ground floors are correct in the Bhuri wing which I think has the most serenity and a huge pool at good room rates. Just book a pool view (otherwise you get a view of a tree or side laneway), and on the second storey. The staff have good english and try so hard. You have to accept that when you go overseas, the place will be filled with people of all nationalities so if your not patient, then holiday in your back yard. The massage ladies around the pool are angels and were a highlight - and cheap. With its five resturants its a place where you can stay for your whole time in security away from the open crowds. The beds are a little hard but such is life. Get a good second storey room and life is good.

Myself, wife, and kids ages 7 and 9 came in July 06 and loved it We staid on the beach-side in a 2 room suite - adjoining rooms on the ground floor. Top notch linens, bed, and all the rest. Our friends stayed in the portion of the hotel across the street from the beach which is not as luxurious but nice non the less and the price is reduced in turn. The several pools were large and provide room for the kids to play while out of the way of others. We did have an issue with insects in our room (not surprising given rainy season and ground floor. Within minutes of letting the staff know a fellow arrived to treat the room. They had the red flag up all the time as the ocean was somewhat rough and the lifeguards were very vigilant (almost too much) as they chased you out of the water if you went in above your neck. Pattong beach was even rougher but they let you swim and surf. Great Place, hated to leave even after 10 days.

Wonderful hotel situated on Kata Noi beach which was fantastic. Staff were very accomodating and friendly. Room was a good size, well maintained and comfortable.Spa services were excellent and very cheap compared to UK prices. Food was first class. Quick and cheap taxi ride to local town with many restaurants. Some shops and couple of restaurants in Kata Noi within yards of hotel but worth the taxi trip for better choice.
Would recommend requesting room on second (top) floor to give best sea view and most privacy. The view from the first floor was through the palm trees which was OK but could have been better. From ground floor could hardly see the sea.

My 17 year old daughter and I traveled together to Phuket and felt lucky that we booked where we did! The Katathani looks very unassuming upon approach-it looks like another wall of shops and tailors from the street, but once you walk inside the door, you'll feel like you entered another world.

We were supposed to stay at the Kata Buri, but by an absolute stroke of luck we were upgraded to the 3rd floor of the Katathani-the room, the balcony and the view were AMAZING!

The room was large and the balcony looked out over the immaculately kept grounds, gardens and pools. From our vantage-point, you could see the beach through the palms and it felt like tropical heaven!

We met no other Americans at the resort. Our only regret was that we didn't leave more time to just enjoy the grounds of the Katathani-we didn't spend enough time here!

The hotel service was exemplary. They booked us at a great Thai restaurant that looked out over the ocean and we had the best seats in the house! (The restaurant was On the Rock in Kata Center-would HIGHLY recommend). The front desk people always made good suggestions and were eager to answer any questions we had.

Each evening, there were fresh beach towels and an orchid left in the room. The room was clean and well-appointed and the air-conditioning was VERY cold (and a little difficult to turn down).

There is a mini-bar in the room with VERY reasonably priced drinks (beers for less then $1.50 USD), and they always left complimentary drinking water daily.

We went to Phuket with an open mind. If you are hoping for long expanses of quiet beaches and/or "sleepy beach towns", this place is not for you. Although Katathani is away from the madness of Patong, it is not even remotely "off the beaten path"-Directly across the street are small stores, a tailor and an internet place (Much cheaper then the internet available at the hotel). There are several decent restaurants within walking distance and a short tuk-tuk ride away (and about 100 baht) is Kata Center, which has everything imaginable.

Get a massage while you're there. On the beach or on the grounds, it is about $9.00 USD for an hour long Thai massage. Sunsets on the beach are amazing and the lady that rents the chairs and sells the beer on the beach is charming. (Beers on the beach are cheap and ice cold).

We used the SCUBA shop on sight and went to Phi Phi Islands. The diving was GREAT, but the drawback is that it takes 3 hours each way to do this dive. I read that there are speedboats that will get you there in 45 minutes-that would be my choice if I returned there.

I LOVED this place. We saw a lot of other hotels, and I can confidently say that Katathani had the nicest beach and the best grounds of all that I've seen. The service is amazing; the complimentary breakfast was excellent, the grounds are immaculate, clean and extensive...Just a perfect place to return to after a crazy day in "the real world" of Phuket.

As an aside, do try to learn a few Thai phrases (i.e. Sa waa tee ka = hello, good bye, good afternoon and a general greeting when spoken by a female and "Kaap khun kaa" = Thank you when spoken by a female.

Pros: Sunsets, the beach, the pools, the grounds, the massages, the employees, the location…I could go on forever-everything was great!

Cons: …um…still trying to think of one or two…I may have to get back to you about that ; )
