“Chilled out Hotel”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Stayed for 4 nights at the Avista early July 13 - what a result.
This hotel for me has the the key ingredients of location, great staff, great food and good facilities.
The hotel is in a great position for a walk to Kata beach and Kata town and about 50 minutes from the airport
From the minute we landed until we left the staff across the hotel functions were all extremely professional, helpful and friendly - a real asset to the hotel!
For some reason the hotel restaurant was often quiet when we eat? Don't understand why because the food and service was fantastic. The menu is varied providing suitable options for both lunch and dinner. Having tasted a lunch and dinner we ate mostly in the hotel. Boring maybe, but the food and price is excellent, coupled with the star service the restaurant staff provided it was a no brainer!
We stayed in a club room which was large and had a brilliant sea view from the veranda. The bed was large and comfortable and the bathroom is also large well appointed with a stand alone shower. The facilities such as wifi and tv always worked perfectly.
It has a pool split on two levels. The lower level is adjacent to the restaurant and bar which is tucked away. This area was mainly used by the adults with no small people! Always lounges when we visited the pool which are of good quality. The upper pool is larger and also had a pool side bar. When sat by the lower pool you can't see the upper pool and is well thought out.
This is not a 5 star hotel nor does it pretend or try to be. It's a very chilled out hotel, providing excellent service in a very relaxing environment - we were looking for a relaxing 4 days within a busy holiday itinerary and we got it! If that's what you're after I would recommend this hotel hands down!

Room Tip: The club rooms are good value and as I understand guarantee a sea view

Our experience was mostly good.

-The location is pretty good, don't worry too much about the hill. It is steep but it is short. Unless you are mobility impaired it won't be a problem.

-Club room view is really good. I recommend it. Actually there was not a big price difference from standard to club rooms.

-Restaurant is good although a bit overpriced (as in all resorts). I recommend ordering from the Thai menu not the western menu. The food was cheaper and significantly better

-The pool was probably a bit too small, we were there apparently during low season, but sometimes could not get a pool bench and the pool itself was PACKED mostly with kids.

-All the facilities were well maintained and the staff were all exceptional.

-Very trivial complaint but the slippers provided sound like sand paper on a blackboard when you walk on their floors.

We stayed at the Avista this past June for a week. We booked the hotel through its website and prepaid for a considerable discount with breakfast included. My wife and I are conflicted about this resort, because we really liked it, but there were several things that detracted from our stay. Some probably in control of the resort, and some likely not.

First the good. The hotel is top of a hill with fantastic views (if you have an ocean side room). We had a club room with a deck and terrific view of the ocean and Kata Beach. Definitely recommend staying in a club room if your budget allows. Housekeeping kept the room clean and neat (with one exception, see "the not so good" below). The mini-fridge in the room is well-stocked and not outrageously priced. Our room came with 2 complimentary beers a day, which was a great perk. The pool has two sections and is not particularly deep in any one area. It stays cool, which is extremely important in the Thailand heat. The upper section has a swim-up bar with a 20% happy hour from 3 to 5. The drinks are a bit spendy, but the pool bartender makes excellent drinks and we felt them more than worth the expense. The hotel staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. The restaurant was good, sometimes great. The breakfast was decent and includes made to order eggs, fresh fruit, pastries, and drip or specialty coffee drinks and tea. I think the hotel could use a dedicated concierge, as we could not get a sense of what excursions were the best value. We ended up trying out a vendor down the street and another travel agent some folks we met at the resort used. We had a nice experience at the spa, we had a couples facial massage and really liked it.

The bad, these things took what we considered a 4-star resort down to a 3-star. First, we had an pretty significant number of ants in our room on our second day of the stay. We called housekeeping and they came right up to the room and did a quick clean-up. The next morning the ants had reappeared. At breakfast the hotel manager greeted us and asked if everything was pleasant with our stay and we relayed the issue with the ants. Housekeeping came up again and switched out our sheets and re-cleaned the area with the ants. We were also told to put our welcome flowers in the fridge. After then we only had a trivial number of ants in our room. Bravo to the hotel for trying hard to fix the problem, but I feel that I at least need to bring it up.

Second, and most significant to our stay, is related to the hotel's location. The hill is not brutal by any means, but anyone with small children or feeling the effects of age will probably want to take a cab frequently. Unfortunately, the only taxi stand on the hill is apparently run by a very protective "union" that intimidates other drivers and charges what we felt were exorbitant fees. During normal times of the day you cannot apparently call a car service to retrieve you without the service having to pay the stand on the hill. The hotel alludes to it having limited ability to provide transportation. Please realize that the hotel is on a hill and at some point you'll end up overpaying for a short ride.

Overall, you will enjoy your stay at the Avista. Kata beach is very nice, there are numerous bars and restaurants within a short distance. Take the time to get a surfing lesson down the beach and try the steak houses in Kata, they were our surprise favorites.

Room Tip: Get a water view and a club room.

The hotel is probably one of the best at Kata Beach, although it will not be my first choice next time. I would prefer the southern part of Kata Beach and a more child-friendly hotel.
Travelling with a 5 -year old I would rather choose a hotel with a bit more to offer.
The kids-club is just a tiny room with some toys and two tv's. The kid-club staff is good, but the space is just tiny.
The rooms are all very nice and we had a great Deluxe towards the pool. There is really no need for a Clublevel...Just the same room at double the price, with a limited sea view.

The pros:
- safe and good location on a hilltop
- good selection at breakfast
- clean and well maintained grounds
- good customerservice and friendly staff, especially Iren the customer relations manager(?) and at breakfast.
- The hotel is very good at handling complaints! So if you have something you are not happy about they will try to amend.
- safe to leave your belongings in the room, tried to leave a tip on the table, and the money was never taken..

The cons:
- this area of Kata Beach is in my opinion a bit to sleazy...to many ladybars and not enough good restaurants
- the pools are small and they were freezing cold
- very slippery around the pools, you need to have slippers on
- poor service at the restaurant...everything took ages to order.
- there is only one restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner
- travelling during the rainy season the offers at the hotel are just to limited

Rearding the taxi-mafia outside, there is really nothing to worry about. They charge you an extra 100 bath compared to other taxis, but seriously what is 100 bath...??
We used them for a daytrip around to the Big Buddha/Butterfly Park, Central Festival and Wat Chalong and found the driver to be excellent, so no worries!

So final verdict: Good hotel, good customerservice ( apart from the restaurant) and good rooms. But no WOW factor for me. This hotel is best for couples and families with older children.

Room Tip: Ask for a room towards the pool, and from the 2n floor and up! Some 1st floor rooms are "below...

Kindly accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused to you during your stay with us. We have taken corrective action to most of your observations. We have placed artificial grass on the slippery area next to the pool and for the pool size we would like to inform that many of our guests compliment us for our pool size and layout and also that it looks same as the photos posted in our website. We advise our guests to take a shower from the pool side shower before getting into the pool to acclimatize to the temperature of the pool water.
We have made a note of your feedback regarding the restaurant service and would like to assure you that we have shared the same with the team for corrective actions.
Regarding the availability of only one restaurant, we would like to inform that we are presently in planning stage to open an additional restaurant very soon.

The hotel's location is very nice, Kata beach was a bit further away, but the area was less noisy. Our room was spacious and clean, with small balcony overlooking the blue beach in the distance. The pool area look amazing. Breakfast was good with lots of choices. Looking forward to coming back and stay longer.

A great hotel with a fantastic buffet breakfast. Very friendly staff, clean and comfortable rooms, although the beds are firm, nice balcony off all the rooms, free shuttle to Patong 2 x a day, close walk to Kata beach and village, you certainly can't go wrong with this hotel. The staff were very good to us, and upgraded our room without charge due to a misunderstanding with our booking. Great pools too!

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view, facing the afternoon sun! Any floor is OK.

I stayed in Kata beach for 3 nights at the Avista hotel and it was a great experience. The hotel is by far one of the newest in the area. The rooms are clean and spacious. We stayed on the 2nd floor and the room was a bit damp but nothing drastic, the AC worked great. We had a garden view with a nice balcony but not so great view. I would definitely upgrade if view is important to you, also ask for a high floor. The beds were excellent great pillows, I had a fantastic nights sleep which is always very important to me:) Free WI FI, great shower and bathrooms. The free breakfast every morning is superb! Everything from cereal and pastries, fresh fruits and juices to pancakes and Thai food. The location is perfect. Kata beach can be busy and quite noisy so if you want to be off the main street the Avista is not beach front but I thought it was perfect. Its located a short 7 minute walk from the beach up on the mountain side. The hill is quite steep and you do have to walk up and down it so prepare yourself or take a taxi! I loved the location it was up on the hill and quite away from the massage, tuk tuks and markets, but still so close to the beach and restaurants and shopping. The only thing i was a little disappointed in was the concierge. It was very difficult to get help from the hotel for booking ours or boats etc...The staff was very kind and pleasant just not very knowledgeable. If you do stay here book excursions through an agent there is a great lady who is located just at the foot of the hill to the left next to the tattoo parlor she is very helpful and will get you great prices. Enjoy Kata beach.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and pool or sea view.
