“Very nice hotel - pros and cons make this good choice for some, bad for others.”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

Steve V seems to have already written my review. Wife and I stayed five days at the beginning of December. Check-in greeting where they seat you with a nice, cool, little drink and come to you with your paperwork is a nice touch after long ride from the airport.
Breakfast good, staff very pleasant, rooms quite spacious/quiet/well-equipped, beds comfortable (which is always the most important thing to us). Pools and areas around the pool are very pretty but as others have commented perhaps too small for the number of people that could be staying at the hotel. That said, we never had a problem finding a spot in or out of the sun during our stay (assumedly most people spend most of the day at the beach or exploring). Was going to say workout facility is barely adequate but it's actually not adequate - Seems only the western hotel chains consider this to be important. Internet service very slow but that seems to be very common in Thailand. Slow, but good enough to meet our needs. Hill is definitely an issue - We're very fit people but after chugging up the hill several times/day for two and a half days (albeit made a lot more difficult by our continuous wearing of flip-flops) we finally decided to rent scooters. Note that fixed taxi/tuktuk rate for Kata is 200 baht; scooter rental for a whole day is typically about 200 baht, negotiable downward for multiple days. Wife and I both have experience on motorcycles so riding scooters wasn't a problem - biggest issue is navigating through throngs of scooter-riding tourists who probably haven't even ridden a bicycle in years, let alone been on a motorcycle. Hotel has a secured area for parking scooters.
One (more) complaint - Well, maybe two. Every morning when we woke up the room was very warm and muggy. Seems the air conditioning was turned off automagically for several hours every night. Secondly, the shuttle runs are so infrequent as to be pretty much useless.
Hill aside, location was very convenient, close to everything but separate/serene. Good views from the upper floors.
Value-wise, we were able to get a very good rate through one of the Internet hotel-room brokers, so the 5-star value rating.

I and my friend stayed at Avista in November 2012. We are in love with this place.
We love the room, the wonderful pool, the amazing pool bar and the nice restaurant.

But the best thing with Avista isn’t the physical attributes it is the personal and caring service!
The service here isn’t boring standardized service, here they really take time to solve your problems and care for you. The service really comes from the staff’s heart which makes you feel very special. Avista got one of the best service standards I ever met, and I work within the hotel & conference industry and visit many hotels every year!

Recent reviews mention the hill as a negative thing. The hill is not a problem for an adult or a child with normal mobility. If you have a problem with this hill you should exercise more!

I would like to give a special thanks to K.Aoy and her lovely staff at the front office. You really made my stay memorable!

Love you!

Good bad and the ugly – Towel Mafia

Good - The hotel is lovely and clean with a stunning entrance and reception when you first arrive. Ice cream for the kids, juice for you. Flowery necklaces. All very impressive, you’re whisked to your room and it’s all very fine. The rooms are good, large and well-equipped, good aircon, big shower, bath, and bed. Nice balcony too. We where on the first floor, which seemed to be the default choice if you have children, but in fairness was as good as any floors view and the only sound was the pool outside - if you opened the doors. Staff on the whole where friendly and wanted to do well, but at times seemed to lack direction not sure what to do and when to do it. On numerous occasions our room wasn’t cleaned until after 4pm, not the maid’s fault who cleaned it, it seemed she was under poor supervision, she always apologised as we walked back from the pool, as she had not yet had time to clean our room.
Location is really good; you are at a mid point between Kata and Karon, where a sub community of shops and bars seems to have grown to support the numerous hotels. So you are never short of a Bamboo Mart or a restaurant/bar. All very civilised and not too imposing. The best restaurant we found was Wine connection it is a really good restaurant, good beers, lovely food and amazingly cheap wine… the worst was Sorento, avoid! Poor food, a wine list with no wine and no idea.
Bad – I don’t care what anybody says about the hill it is ridiculous, its stupidly steep, I'm taking virtually 45 degrees, not particularly safe, and strangely not at all mentioned in any form of Hotel literature, I'm fit, so is my partner, but pushing a pram of any sorts or carrying any bags of shopping really does get you thinking at the end of the day out on the beach, or out shopping, can I be bothered with climbing that in 38 degrees? “No”. So you end up forking out for a Tut Tut.. Which all seem to be a standard £4.. Wherever you are…The Peach Hotel next door you notice is constantly running their golf buggy up and down the hill, whizzing past with their smiling customers in the back, the Avista however supplies no such amenities, so you are condemned to sweating like a horse, or being ripped off daily for circa £4…
The TV reception is shocking.. If you wish to have a quiet night in watching a film or whatever forget it, I assume the TV is on the same link as the WIFI, (ill come back to this later), but its pixelated, frozen and not worth watching, as you will no doubt want to throw it in the Pool after 5 mins. The last time I saw TV like this was in 1979… I was waiting for Top of the Pops to barge on.
Wi-Fi. Yes it does exist; it’s as slow as a coffee at Costa, has no bandwidth and is as reliable as staying dry walking up the hill to the hotel. For email, fine, attachments, no. Facebook, fine, downloads or uploads forget it…its free, so expect a Free service… your better served looking at the free wifi most restaurants offer… Two Chiefs seemed to be the best I found. Or buy a local 3g-sim card.
Service – if you’ve been to Asia before, you may expect a waiter to come to your Sun bed and ask what you wish to drink, eat, A Smile and a menu, not in Avista, you need to find them. A tiny thing maybe, but I'm on holiday, I'm in Thailand and that’s what I expect…
Staff – on the whole the staff where fine, that would be the local Thaïs, who are always so helpful and friendly, always offering something extra, it’s their culture, not trained or forced. We did notice 2 European ladies who seemed to be management; they constantly seemed to be swanning about smiling, and doing very little. If they where management, or had some form of authority the I suggest they stop looking bemused constantly and smiling inanely and pay attention to their guest…
UGLY – Something that I have never come across before on holiday in any resort is the pure arrogance and selfishness I witnessed at Avista, which could so easily have been rectified by simple management. There are probably 400+ rooms at Avista and possibly 70 sun beds, given most rooms occupy 2 this would equate to 800 guests. Basically 1 bed per 10 residents. Of the 70 beds only 15 are in the sun most of the day, they lie next to the upper pool. The rest lie in the shade due to the flora the hotel has, which is beautiful to behold but useless to the casual bather. So here we have it, certain guest will drop their towel off at 7am on the chosen 15, all the beds that are sun worthy therefore will remain tagged, but unobtainable to the casual bather. Not only do these early risers, yet invisible guest decide they want the sun, they also wan the shade too, so they place their towels on other beds in the shade. I saw on more than one occasion 1 person have 4 beds. Shifting between upper pool, lower, then shade, then up to the sun again. Meanwhile families where forced, and this I witnessed, to lie on their towels without a bed, or just go to the beach. I fear this is forced behaviour, a reaction to that fact that because there is no towel etiquette or anybody actually monitoring the sun beds then the towels stay on the beds all day! Simple solution? A sign/signs - “ maximum 20 minutes bed unattended or your towel and items will be removed” or something along those lines, then peace and harmony will be restored to you, Kata and me.
Taxi mafia is a nonsense - never witnessed it and as you now know they get used a lot to the hotel and from it, if anything the taxi/Tut Tut drivers outside the hotel are very pleasant.
So in summary – great place , if you love hills, getting up early, hate the sun, don’t like TV and don’t want a Thai hotel in Thailand…

Room Tip: Pay more, get close to the sun beds

In Dec 2012, we stayed for 4 nights in a Grand Deluxe room. The size of the room was really impressive, containing 1 king size and 1 queen size, a bath room with separate shower and bath tub and 2 sinks. The room left nothing to be desired, being equipped with flat screen TV, safe, coffee making facilities, and microwave (which we did not use). The wall opposite the bed had a long bench with power points and LAN cable socket. It seemed ideal for a laptop computer, apart from the fact that the room lacked a chair to sit on. Fortunately, when we approached the front desk, a chair was delivered almost instantly, suggesting that this was not an uncommon complaint. The only small drawback of the room was the low water pressure and erratic temperature of the shower. Wireless internet tended to be patchy. But the wired LAN connection was more reliable. We stayed on 4th floor of building B where our view was blocked by palm trees.
Service throughout the hotel was very friendly. At the pool, guests get served small complimentary snacks like fruits. Variety and quality of the breakfast buffet was quite nice, but (by the high standards of Thai hotel in the same price range) not top class. The guy at the egg station was entertaining and quite skilled, as he could prepare poached eggs effortlessly.
The location is convenient. After a short walk to the bottom of the hill, many restaurants, shops and massage parlors can be reached. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk from the room to the beach. There is a free buggy service to the beach which is not so convenient, as it is infrequent and needs to be booked one day in advance.

A nice afternoon excursion is to see the sunset at cape Promthep. The return trip is 1000 Bath return. Ask the driver to stop at Karon view point for a spectacular view of Kata and Karon beaches.

We stayed in the one bedroom suite on level 5 for 4 nights in December. We had to go to level 2 and walk about 100m then take another lift up to level 5 in order to get the our suite. This is just a little bit annoying because you have to walk a bit to go in and out of your room.

The hotel is about 5-10 mins walk to Kata Beach.

Wouldn't use the Spa and massage service there again because it was really pricey. We paid close to 7000 baht for two people for a 2-3 hours massage session. It was nothing special and certainly not ten times better than normal thai massage which we can get at beaches/palours for 300 baht per person. The lady at the front counter of the spa didn't have the same genuine and friendly Thai service that we encountered throughout Thailand.

I found the fixtures in the suite really odd. The tap handles were all round so they were hard to grip. The shower head had one constant pressure, which meant we couldn't make the water flow faster or slower. In particular the water temperature of the shower fluctuated when my wife used the tap to wash her face, so i had to constantly move the handle to get the right temperature. There were so many light switches located in confusing spots that we didn't know which one turned on which light. The air conditioner only blew in one direction so when we were sleeping we had a constant breeze of cool air blowing in our face for the whole night. Therefore I just found the features and fixtures in the suite not to be user friendly and functional compared to other hotels I've stayed in.

I would definitely recommend a stay at Avista. I agree with others who say the steep hill up to the hotel is not a problem and is nice exercise after lounging on the beach, at the gorgeous pool and after the decadent breakfast. Absolutely amazing breakfast, delicious pancakes, fresh pastries and perfect eggs. Location is perfect if you like amenities close by, like shops and restaurants.. but not too busy like Patong. Although we did spend a few nights exploring Patong and the free shuttle service was excellent and reliable. The rooms at Avista are stunning. The most comfortable large beds and lovely balcony and well stocked bathroom. We were made to feel so special. On arrival we were seated and the pleasant lady came to us to sort out our check in and we were asked what time we wanted our room cleaned everyday and what type of teabags we liked in our rooms! With a nice refreshing drink and flowers we were escorted to our beautiful room. The staff always smiled and greeted us with the great Thai hospitality and we were so looked after. Loved our stay here and would love to go back! Thank you Avista

As a frequent traveller I found it annoying that you had to be seated in a comfortable chair and wait to be checked in when the appropriate person was available. When the lady arrived we could not understand 90% of what she was saying. Once the formalities were completed we were shown to our room which on first impressions was great. The cleanliness of the furniture was not acceptable but the size of the room and the amenities provided were excellent. I expect all table tops and surfaces to be wiped over but in our case the room had numerous spills which had not been cleaned sufficiently. The supposed free Wi Fi was virtually non existant and even the free computers in the foyer were basically as good as useless if you wanted to do anything online. The hotel amenities were great - offering a gym, games room, library and two very good pool areas. Most rooms overlook the pools which gives a nice outlook. The breakfasts provided were of a high standard and I have never met anyone as happy as the egg cook. Many of the staff went out of their way to make our stay a happy one, but on several occasions when I approached the front desk with a query there was a communication problem as the staff were not fluent in English. I would have thought that a basic knowledge of English would be a pre requisite for a front desk job. The spa prices were very expensive and the travel desk was of no use at all. We were interested in booking some trips and whilst out walking we obtained brochures and quotes. Upon return to the hotel I asked the tour desk to give me the price for each of the trips I had chosen and the price was very nearly double what I eventually paid elsewhere. The steep hill on which the hotel sits is exactly that - certainly not suitable for elderly people or people with a heart condition.
In all the hotel is good and I would still recommend it but it could be so much better by ironing out some of the problems.
