My best friend had her wedding reception at Kata Beach and stayed here instead of the Kata Beach Resort where we were suggested to stay by the couple.
Saw some reviews and photos online, thought they looked good and decided to stay here instead since it's not too far from the beach.

I must say I really liked the decor of the hotel. Very chic and trendy and I liked the fact that the toilet and floors were not covered by some tiles/carpet and had that zen feel to it. Also the toilet is very big (with a huge toilet that can fit 2!) with see through glass of course. The balcony is attached to it's own private pool and had a nice view. All rooms come with a Mac and an Ipod Sync. I recommend this to young couples as this hotel has a sexy feel to it.

The concept of the hotel is quite complex, you'd need to take a good look at where the lobby is and if your room is at the top most level you'll have to climb up/down the stairs or slope before you can find the connecting lift to ground floor! These lifts are located at level 3 so if you're not really a hiker, ask for a lower level room because trust me the slopes/stairs are STEEP!

Anyway getting to this hotel will require some exercise because you'll still need to bypass a slope that's at least 45 degrees to get to the main entrance. They don't call it Sugar Palm GRAND HILLSIDE for nothing!!!

Breakfast is OK but I think the restaurant just next to the hotel serves better food.

I don't recommend this hotel for families with young kids/older couples for obvious reasons... And if you plan to party and get drunk, by the time you go back to your room you'll be sober!

Room Tip: Choose the rooms on the lower level and avoid the corner apartments if you choose the en-suite pool rooms because there is a waterfall and will cause some noise since it's next to the room

Stayed 2 nights in this hotel.

Encounter one dead cockroach in the room after we checked in.
At first we thought nothing of it, so we went out for the whole day.
Upon our return at night, we saw 3 big adult cockroaches crawling around the basin and shower area!!

Called the staff, they are really poortly trained in english. They don't understand what the word cockroaches is and I have to spent 5 minutes explaining to them what is going on.

Shortly after a guy came with a insecticide, he looks annoyed and just go about his business spraying the insecticide as if that's a air freshner.

During this whole encounter : NOT EVEN A WORD OF SORRY WAS UTTERED FROM THE MANAGEMENT/STAFF.

We requested a transfer to another room, they gave us another room about 4 doors away.

They could improve by training their staff to smile more and their english.
The porter looks highly annoyed and will hang around for tips which is very annoying.

Overall I would not recommend this hotel to anyone! This is the last time i ever set foot at this hotel again.

My friend and I arrived here April 18, after the Songkran excitement (and at times, chaos) in Bangkok. Coming here was definitely a much needed break from Bangkok. After reading about Phuket and speaking to expats who lived on the island, we decided on Kata, since many have recommended this place if looking for a quieter escapade. We were pretty worn out from the hype of the capital so Patong was definitely a no-no for us.

When we got there, reception quickly checked through our docs and got us into our room in no time. The layout of the building was a little novel as we had to switch elevators once. The hotel was surrounded by lush jungles, and my friend and I (who are both originally from Borneo) immediately felt homesick! There was no building crammed next to this hotel and its location halfway up a hill kept the noise level to a minimum. We booked a room with a jacuzzi. The room was very clean. It had a queen size and a single bed. Bathroom was clean as well with all the needed amenities. Jacuzzi was excellent!! We soaked for about an hour that very first night we were there. The view from our room is excellent as well! To top up to the excellence, the mini bar was free.

The only setback was that we were only allowed certain tiers of the multi-level swimming pool. It would've been nice if we could use the infinity pool at the very top! Breakfast was mediocre, but edible to keep us from starving. Yes, the walk up the hill may be tiring. But hey, you're going to be parading around in swim suits. I say a little exercise would be needed!

(Now I'll talk about the town) The town concentration of Kata isn't that big. The town basically consist of clothes stores, tailors, massage/saloon parlors, etc. The normal touristy shops you find at any beach towns in the country. After Krabi and Samui, all these towns look pretty much the same, except for the beaches.

One really good Italian place which an expat friend brought us to had superb Italian food. A must visit for those craving for a good pizza/pasta. The spinach ravioli was exceptional! Totally fresh! (Haha, it's a little weird because we're in Thailand and we're eating Italian :P). This place is called Capannina Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria. The second night we were there, we had dinner at Raya Restaurant in Phuket, a must-visit restaurant in Phuket town! Awesome Thai food.

It was nice to see a room in a good condition after a bad experience the night before in another hotel. We looked on Agoda for the rate and there was a great deal at 44 USD per night. But we decide to go there first so we can have a look first. Once we were ok formthenrrom, we had to discuss abut the price. They offered us a price higher than Agoda and as soon as we show then the deal at 44 USD they give us the same rate + breakfast. And we even get an upgrade :) with sea and pool view = great. I guess the hotel was in low occupancy as it is the low season now. Great value for price paid.

lovely pool access room (we stayed in room 2101). i stayed in a number of 5* and this is the first time i see a pool access room provided with mac mini, keyboard and mouse. we were also given a daily complimentary oreas, water, beer and colas! wireless connection is really bad though (i could not use my ipad at all during the stay). good thing i had a 3g micro sim. however, we see that the hotel were not being properly maintaned. also, staff were not friendly and staff manning the breakfast hall hardly speaks english. we didnt like the breakfast at all but had no choice since it was included in the room package. on our check out, i nicely requested the reception to call our agent to confirm the airport transfer but were told "i will call him if he didnt showed up". not good if the guest were trying to get to the airport on time. i just shrugged my shoulder and hope he showed up on time if not i will make a fuss out of it with their management. overall, it think its nicely conceptualised hotel but are being poorly managed. if top management continued with the current maintenance, i see the hotel dilapitated in the next 3 to 5 years time. staff needs more training in the customer service. we stayed 4 nights in 5 star hotel in patong before transferring to sugar palm hill and staff were excellent.
