How disappointed I was with Mercure Charlestown. I finally got to stay here, as my husband has stayed here on business with international guests. Check-in was friendly. Sorry the rooms just don't make the grade. We stayed on the 1st floor in an Executive Queen room, we were located right near the end of the building near the laundry. View, what view (see pictures) Highway noise can be heard from this building. This hotel has water leakage problems; the smell in the corridors is very over powering and hall windows need to be left open to try and allow the fresh air into the corridor areas. Its not working.
Our room did not look like the pictures on the website, the furniture may be newish and carpet newish but was lacking any pictures on the walls and this looks very bare, and the bed - so old that they sag in the middle; you end up falling into the middle so its hang on to the edge for grim death. The bathrooms have been updated at some stage but grout is missing in places between tiles. Air-conditioner noisy and creaking. Front door bangs and rattles when wind blows into corridors, so had to fold cardboard and jam this in between door and architraves. We had problems with our swipe card not working on 2 occasions and these have to be re-programmed again and again by reception staff, very inconvenient to guests. No lift in this building so you need to drag your bags up the stairwell to your rooms, would be difficult for senior/elderly people. Breakfast / pool area attractive. Breakfast staff good and food was good and there was variety available. But you are not offered or advised that a hot cooked breakfast is available by staff. But other guests we notice were having cooked breakfasts. You need to advise your staff to advise guests what is available to them.
Bar area is being renovated so could not use this area.
The gardens around this hotel could be better and need weeding and sweep up the bark that has fallen or blown out of the gardens onto the pavement. Looks untidy.
And put some plants into the back foyer near stairwell, looks very unattractive and this has been like this for some time.
I would not recommend this hotel to other family members or friends nor will my husband be staying at this hotel again for business. A real let down and very disappointed.
