Reviewed February 11, 2014

We stayed on a Thursday evening as my wife had business next morning a few miles away. I had booked a superior room and the website said they had all recently been refurbished.

The bedroom was quite small but OK for one night. Bathroom was tiny with the toilet roll holder hanging off the wall. The old fashined windows did not close properly meaning it was fairly cold in there. In the morning there was a small pool of water on the window ledge as it had rained overnight. At 75.00 for the room I felt it was a little expensive.

When we came down to breakfast at about 8.30 there were just 2 people in the restaurant, so not busy. We both ordered different 3 egg omlettes. Considering the kitchen must have been quiet they took longer than expected to arrive. The waitress bought them out and placed them on the table.I was so taken aback at the colour of mine I failed to say anything immediately. It was not just overcooked but had virtually been burnt, a very dark brown.
The waitress had at this point dissapeared as she probably had nothing else to do in the room with the other two people having now finished their breakfast. My wife did eat her tomatoe omlette which was simply overcooked not destroyed.

I then had to take my wife to her appointment and return later to check out.

My concern here was how could any kitchen send out an omlette thart was clearly inedible when they were quiet. !

When checking out I advised reception of this simply to be told sorry about that !

We stayed at this Old English Inn hotel at the beginning of January , 4 weeks ago to be exact , the reason I am writing this late review is because of reading an awful (2.5 out of 10) review by someone who stayed there at the same time. Our experience was of staying in a small hotel with a lovely atmosphere , a comfortable room , pleasant and helpful staff from the room maid through to management , a lovely pub with really well kept real ales , a very nice restaurant with good value , well prepared and served food and finally , excellent breakfasts , freshly cooked along with an ample buffet as well. I have stayed in many different locations and types of accomodation at all levels (having been a sales rep. for many years) and said to my partner as we left , that this was one of the best places I had ever stayed in because of the lovely relaxing atmosphere.

Friends of ours stayed here about 5 years ago & were very disappointed with the rooms, service and food. We decided to stay here to meet up with some other friends and were very pleasently surprised. Our room was very comfortable, the staff were very pleasant & the food was of a very good standard. On top of this, the food & drink prices were very reasonable.
We used the restaurant each evening & the only downside was that each evening some menu choices were not available even though we arrived at 7.30pm. This was a shame.
Breakfast was included in our price, and was both generous and tasty.

Thanks for your comments . A lot has definitely changed in five years.
Apologies for the unavailability of some menu items when you dined with us. This does occasionally happen and we will keep monitoring the situation if it arises again.

Just back from spending a two night B&B break at this hotel. My husband booked online and got a very good deal-although I was unaware of this until after we had left. The hotel has been redecorated through out and has a cosy feel about it.We found the staff very pleasant and polite.Breakfast choice was very good. Our room and hotel were both clean and fresh. The only comment I have is concerning the shower cubicle in our room.Although the hotel has been redecorated the shower had not been changed and was looking a little worst for wear.Liked the liquid soap, body cream and shower gel-nice touch. All in all we had a comfy bed and a pleasant stay.I had not stayed in an Old English Inn before, having been put off by reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Cross Hands.

Stayed at the Cross Hands Hotel with my daughter on Thursday, 19 January 2014. The rooms were nice and clean and fresh. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was lovely and really good food. Would recommend anyone to stay there. They also had a really reasonable food menu at only £10 for two people and there was lots of choice on the menu. Would definitely consider staying there again in the future.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter

Stayed here for two nights in early December - but a bit late in posting. Overall, had a pleasant time, visiting nearby Bath and Lacock Abbey and the hotel itself is one of Old English Inns better places. Quality of food - at breakfast, bar snacks and in the evening - were all good. But the number of non-availabilities on a non-changing 'specials' list suggests a supply problem. We were a bit disappointed that on the second night we could not be accommodated in the restaurant area - said to be due to large parties, but it never looked that busy to me. Always impressed by places that turn out kippers and poached eggs just-so. Freshly cooked breakfasts are always superior to buffets. Service was a bit hit and miss at times. Our room was comfortable and obviously recently refurbished. Even though we were some way from the main road, traffic noise is a problem from an early hour, especially lorries pulling away from the traffic lights.

Thanks for your comments and we are sorry to hear that you couldn't get into the restaurant.
If you visit again and the restaurant is full - it's always an idea to ask in the evening as we do get cancellations sometimes.
Hope to see you again.

Having stayed at the Cross Hands on two occasions earlier in 2013, we decided to book for Christmas, as we love the Inn and the area. we also tagged extra days on, so made it a nice long break. The young staff are fantastic, so friendly and helpful- a joy to be around (look at the photos!) The food was great - Christmas Eve - ANY two courses off the menu included in the price. Xmas Day - 5 course lunch, and buffet on the evening. Unfortunately my husband slipped and fell down on a wet floor and had to have the paramedics called. Again the young staff were very concerned and did everything they could. The management attitude could have been alot better. All in all, we had a lovely time and will return again in 2014.

Room Tip: This Inn has ground floor rooms which are great for the less able people and they also have step-in...
