“Comfortable Roadside Stopover”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

We booked this hotel for a one night stopover en route to a dog show the next day. The hotel is pet friendly with no additional charges which is always a plus. The check in was brisk and efficient and put us in room 21. This is up a couple of flights of stairs and accessed via the bar but no hassle. The room was generally clean and well presented, though very small, and pretty much had a bed and not much else ! The bathroom was equally compact though it had a large shower which was good. We ate in the restaurant that night and enjoyed our meals, my fillet steak was well cooked and very tasty. The hotel also offers a good value champagne in your room service at £21.99 for a chilled bottle of Lanson black label, but it needs to be ordered when you book, so bear that in mind if a drop of fizz is your thing.

Thank you for your positive comments. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We do have superior rooms which are larger if you prefer to have the space.

We stayed for two nights - Friendly and helpful staff. The room was small but adequate but the Bathroom was tired. Girls don't bother with makeup unless you can apply it in the dark - lighting in the room was dim and the mirror behind a desk was too far away to be useful. There was a mirror in the Bathroom but again no where near a light. Evening meal left a lot to be desired but the Full English Breakfast good, don't have the poached eggs on toast - the eggs are perfect but not drained therefore the toast ends up like paste yuk!

Thanks for your comments. We'll make a spot check on the poached eggs. If you have issues with lighting again don't hesitate to ask for extra lights if you think it might help. Moving forward, we plan to source some brighter bulbs.

We have visited the Cross Hands several times for family meals and this at least indicates we're happy with the food.

There are two basic seating areas - the finely decorated part, and the more fish and chips area. The menu is a bit chainish, by which I mean you could be in a Chef & Brewer, but that's n ot necessarily a bad thing in itself, unless you're expecting fine dining..

The food on, the whole, is very good for the price, but they do occasionally run out of certain dishes and service can be a tad haphazard during busy periods.

Generally, an excellent venue with very reasonable prices - most dishes being under or around £10.

The Cross Hands is ideally located and easy to find from the M4 J18. There is a treasure of a garden behind the restaurant. The bar has a friendly atmosphere, helped along by the staff and a few local "characters". A great place to stay overnight - or longer to explore the locale. Tasty supper, comfortable room and a brilliant breakfst. Well done "George, Colette and the team"!

Room Tip: This is a hotel with character, and a selection of room styles. Ask at reception for your prference

The ending to the title should read...."needs to ensure consistent service".
We stayed at Cross Hands as a family for two nights to tour the Avon area.
Location: The hotel was easy to find, being on the corner of cross-roads, and has a very large car park.
Rooms/decor: Comfortable, and suitable for a 3-star hotel. The hotel had recently been refurbished and was well decorated and clean.
Food: Having browsed the menu online beforehand we thought there would be plenty of choice for our children and intended to stay for evening meals instead of driving around. The breakfast consists of a good choice of continental and cooked 'English' style. The menu for the evening left us struggling to make a decision as there was so much to choose from. The prices were very reasonable for a hotel, main meals were about £8-10. There were different specials for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - which were good deals.
Staff: Friendly and polite staff, creating a pleasant atmosphere......but not enough staff for a Friday evening. The staff service for the two breakfasts was prompt, and also on the Thursday evening - we were very impressed. But Friday evening seemed to be near melt down, being several times informed of items no longer being available after our orders had been taken and waiting ~40 minutes just for the starters. The staff were apologetic but nevertheless - and having now read other Tripadvisors' comments - there seems to be a fundamental lack of staffing being provided on busy evenings, and creating a domino affect when one things goes wrong.
Going back: Overall I wish I lived closer to go back for the meals on a regular basis as they were priced so reasonably, and good - but not on a Friday. This may seem to be contradictory to my criticisms but I think the problem lies with the senior staff and not those who were working hard serving the food etc. I hope the managers start to pay attention to the comments being left. This hotel has considerable potential, and no doubt margins are tight - but is spoiling its image by not giving prompt service consistently.

Lovely two nights stay
Friendly staff on arrival
Wrong meal served during dinner but changed without any fuss
Breakfast on the second day a bit of a disappointment
Waitress completely forgot to take our order and after waiting 20 minutes had to look for her in the kitchen
After 45 minutes breakfast arrived minus toast
Asked for a coffee top up poured half a cup and told that was all she had
Asked for another cup and again had to wait and then ask for milk
Lovely room bit hot as no air con and window restricted to opening 3 inches and had to be propped open with mug
Housekeeping not great only cleaned where it showed bathroom especially dirty
would I stay there again the answer would be yes but just because the staff made up for the faults

Room Tip: Upgrade if possible

Lovely setting in this rural country side. On main road at traffic light junction. On entering the reception area I had to go round to the bar area after 15 mins toget attention to be able to book in. The room was small on the lower floor area with two windows opening out onto the side car park. We went into the bar area to order drinks and food and again only two people serving so we had to wait just to be told if you ordered food there was a 40 - 60 min wait, so we got a drink and decided to go else where to eat. When we returned to our room it was very hot but we could not leave any windows open for fresh air as again the rooms windows opened onto the car park with no way of locking them part open . After a while we got to sleep as the main road was very busy with traffic. In the morning we went along to the breakfast room for a delightful early morning meal. We stayed Sunday to Tuesday morning and overall the staff were excellent in what they done to accommodate us, the breakfasts we excellent in a varied choice . The room was a bit drag with no double glazing and a small bath room and decoration was aged.

Thank you for posting your review. We apologise for any discomfort you felt in your room. We are currently sourcing fans to go into our ground floor rooms, to enable us to keep the rooms cooler, as we understand not everybody feels comfortable leaving their windows open.
We do have a delay process in place when we are very busy in the bar and restaurant, the time we give is the maximum time it may take to receive your food, but generally it will be before that.
We appreciate your comments regarding the staff, and that you enjoyed your breakfast experience, and should you decide to come and visit us again, feel free to call us before hand and ask us to allocate you a room upstairs.
George, Colette and the team.
