“Can someone tell me what the fuss is about...?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2012

We got our evening at Le Canard as a gift. Had we paid for it, we would have been VERY upset. We found the restaurant completely overpriced and the food very average. My prawn and chicken curry had 3 prawns served with about a tablespoon of rice - we were charged R30 extra for more! My hubby had the kudu fillet which was tasty but tiny! The maitre' d (Chet ??) made his presence know by humming loudly every time he passed our table but didnt deign to approach to find out if we were happy. To be fair, the service from the waiters was very attentive. However, the restaurant is not worth its good name and clearly trades on its (very, very outdated) reputation. Definitely, DO NOT bother with this one!!

“Old fashioned girl”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2012

In the words of a song by Ertha Kitt "I want an old fashioned house, with an old fashioned fence
And an old fashioned millionaire" is exactly what one likes to find in a fast paced ever changing foodie landscape like Johannesburg. Le Canard certainly delivers super 'old-fashioned' fine dining. The experience is really about tradition from the beautiful house that the restuarant is situated in , to the charming staff serving and the owner, Frieda, who has a wicked sense of humor and a great personality.

“terrible customer service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2012

My aunt booked her 70th birthday party at Le Canard. She was to have the party room and invited 24 of her best friends and family. The day before the event, she went by to see if she could decorate the room and was told rudely that she could not decorate early and that she would not be able to come and decorate the following day until just before the event. The general manager and the owner were very rude to her. As a result, she changed venues and we celebrated her birthday elsewhere. I would not recommend this restaurant; the management has no respect and treats their customers very poorly.

“Best restaurant in Johannesburg”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2011

I have been going to this restaurant for 16 years & can honestly say it's the best in joburg. For a romantic or business meal it always lives up to expectations. Freda & Chet are excellent hosts.. expensive but worth it...

“Worst experience ever at a restaurant”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2010

We made a reservation at Le Canard restaurant in Sandton on a Wednesday evening. I had to spell my surname to the receptionist, set a time for 19h30 and had to supply him with my cell phone number. We drove all the way from Pretoria to Sandton to have dinner at Le Canard. Upon arrival, we were informed that the restaurant was closed since no reservations were made for that evening. We were furious !! We phoned the manager immediately and he was very apologetic about the incident. However, when the owner (an elderly lady) phoned us the next day, she accused us of lying about making the reservation (why will we drive all the way from Pretoria to Sandton if we have not made a reservation ?). The owner was extremely rude and eventually put the phone down while my husband was talking to her. She has never met us but accused us of seldom going to a restaurant and not willing to spend money at a restaurant (I have no idea how she got to such a conclusion). The fact that we were the only people that made a reservation on a Wednesday evening is probably a sign that the restaurant is not popular at all and maybe we should be thankfull that we did not spend a lot of money there.
