I and my family frequent the Runswick Bay Hotel regularly and always receive a warm welcome and very good service. Worthy of note recently though are the Saturday afternoon / evening outdoor paella events. The paella is absolutely fantastic, each portion contains half a local lobster!! The flavour is spot on and the price very reasonable, when the sun is shining and you have a beer in hand who needs Spain?!

We stayed here on Friday night - a double and a family room. There was initially some mix up with the rooms but the staff were very helpful and resolved the issue as quickly as they could.

We found the staff to be friendly overall and enjoyed staying in a pub.

There are no fancy frills here, it is a basic old fashioned pub and does need some updating, but for a short stay it is a nice base.

The evening meal we ate was delicious. I had the mussels which were £6.95 as a starter and initially thought it seemed quite expensive but the portion was huge and full of flavour. Hubby had the fishcakes which he said were to die for and the rest of the family were happy with their dishes. We all had steaks with homemade chips - all of these were cooked to perfection. The desserts were limited and i had chocolate and mascarpone cheesecake, which I have to say was disappointing but didnt spoil the rest of the meal.

The rooms are basic but clean. My main issue which was echoed throughout all of our group was the pillows. They were like sleeping on rocks. In defence of the pub we didnt ask if they had any others available as were already in bed by the time we noticed, but they were the same on all of the beds.

It is walking distance to Runswick Bay, but a bit of a hike on the way back up! (Not an issue for those who are fit!!)

Parking is good.

We will definitely consider this hotel for our next stay in Runswick Bay. For £70 a night for 2 on a Friday with breakfast included it is a good deal.

Have stayed at the Runswick many times over the years as I do lots of paintings related to certain rocks, well Iron stone found at the far end of the beach.Over the last few years it has grown tired as one reviewer says but do not let that put you off it has a new owner who has great plans. He and his staff are delightful, the chef is brilliant and the lady who does breakfast and is 74 is still to die for, and makes the best breakfast you could get anywhere. Its a pub, I like staying in pubs. Our room was immaculate and well maintained during our stay. Silvia J who says there is nothing to do and nothing there walk down trough the beautiful village and try the beer in the pub overlooking the bay. Cheers. The happy artist. Go to Whitby and take a ride out to sea on The Bark Endeavour a replica of Capt Cooks ship. Brilliant!!!

We called into the hotel for a meal as we were staying at the nearby caravanpark, the food was plentyful and well prepared, I can certainly recommend the gammon and the Steak pie also look very good. Prices are in the region of £10 per meal with Steaks being slightly more expensive we will return

There is no reason on earth to stay in Runswick Bay other than as a stop over on the Cleveland Way because other than the beach and one café there is nothing there. Nowhere to go for a stroll in the evening other than the beach.

The Runswick Bay Hotel has a nice bar and eating area but our room was tired and worn. Really only ask for a clean bed and a clean kettle but unfortunately the kettle was full of limescale and had no filter so the tea was undrinkable. A member of staff did clean it but it needed replacing, might seem trivial but a new, clean kettle isn't much to ask for.

Also, the less than fit will find the walk from the beach to the hotel very hard - many steps up a steep hill.

Room Tip: Not sure about other rooms but our twin room had view of carpark.

Eat here on Friday and Saturday night plus breakfast. Good food and reasonably priced. In a group of 10 and they made us very welcome and really enjoyed our time. Runswick Bay is a lovely place and so are the people we met. Well worth a visit.
