“Basic but good value”
Reviewed September 7, 2012

We stayed overnight here while walking the Cleveland way. The hotel is well situated for walkers, and is only a short walk from thew beach (though its quite a steep hill down to the beach from thew hotel).

The staff were welcoming and friendly, and quickly showed us to our rooms. The rooms are a little basic and the window in our room was a bit draughty. However, it was clean and comfortable.

We had an excellent freshly cooked breakfast.

In general we enjoyed our stay, and would use the hotel again if staying in the area.

We had a really entertaining night a couple of years ago when we went to a Fawlty Towers dining experience. So having read some of the previous reviews we were quite looking forward to meeting Runswick Bays very own Basil Fawlty. Unfortunately he must have been to etiquette school, as we found him very helpful and not at all rude. The evening meal in the pub was good pub food and reasonable vale for money. The room was clean and spacious, with the bed comfortable, offering a good nights sleep. The only real disappointment was breakfast, my wife had scrambled egg that were somewhat rubberised and my full English was the first one that I've not finished in a long time. I had the impression it had been microwaved, the sausage was poor quality and the black pudding, did not look or taste like it seen a frying pan and was uneatable.
Having said all that, would I stay there again, yes quite possibly, it was good value for money, loved the beach at Runswick Bay and it was much nicer than stopping in nearby Whitby. I would just have cereals, fruit juice, coffee and toast for breakfast.

I stayed here with my 5 year old son for three nights in late August 2012. The family room (double bed and bunk bed) was basic and a little dated but it came at a good price. All the staff were friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. The breakfasts were excellent and so were the evening meals, we ate here each evening before going to down to the beach before it went dark for a walk and to throw stones into the sea. My 5 year loved it.

Location was great with Staithes, Sandsend, Whitby and the NYMR all very close by.

I have been visiting Runswick bay hotel all year. It is a great little bar that sells good food and great beer. Try the hardys bitter / the best pint I have had even after visiting the captin cook inn beer festival the same day. The bar has a rustic feel and is welcoming for families and allow dogs. Try the chicken parmo / chicken deep fried with a white sauce and smoothered with cheese.
Highly recomended it for walkers or after a day on the beach

My husband and I stayed here for three nights for a weekend of rest while our 2 year old stayed with Grandma and Granddad. We had an excellent time. The room was basic, but quiet, big, clean and bright with nice countryside views. The price and location can't be beat. One morning, we walked to Staithes along the coast which was a beautiful walk.

The service was great. When we had our dinner in the pub one evening, our food did take some time, but they were very busy and apologised. It was worth the wait. Delicious. A perfectly cooked medium-rare ribeye. Yum. Breakfast was also great.

If you go, one night you should splurge on dinner at the Cliffemount Hotel. A 3 minute walk away with excellent high-end food and views of the bay.

We booked a very last minute room for us and our golden retriever. We weren't sure what to expect but we were very impressed. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The hotel was in a good location, easy to find and with a car park. We didn't have dinner at the hotel (but we will next time!) Breakfast was yummy and the service was excellent - everyone was friendly and helpful. Winston, our dog, was also made very welcome! Excellent value - we will return and hopefully soon!

Had a very enjoyable meal here after spending a day at Sandsend just along the coast.

Service was friendly and efficient. All the food was served hot and was tasty. Big plus for us was that they had a selection of small plate meals which suited my mother who only has a small appetite. I had steak and mushroom pie with chips and peas followed by a homemade crumble for pudding which was very tasty. The food was very reasonably priced.

Would recommend if you are in the area.
