“Beautiful Place in the middle of the jungle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014

This casa was one of our highlights during our trip through Costa Rica.
The separate lodges are very clean and comfortable. In the night you can hear the jungle and see a lot of fireflys. The owner is a really nice and helpful lady from the Netherlands.
The breakfast was delicious the dinner ok.
If we didn't had already another plans we would stay more than only one night.
We would suggest everybody this place.

We stayed at the Casa Rio Blanco for two night during our trip to Costa rica and highly recommend it. The couple that own the cabins are very friendly and were super helpful in introducing us to a guide in the Tortuguero National Park. Which is a MUST SEE as it's breathtaking. Ask for the guide Castor when you're there.
We had dinner both nights there and the food was fabulous. The cabins were very clean and well laid out. Open your blinds and you have the rain forest in your backyard. So beautiful.
It can be a bit tricky to find the place as it's up this windy gravel bumpy road, but that's a part of the charm.

We stayed at this charming lodge for our first night after a very long plane trip. It was exactly what we needed! Private grounds with lots of beautiful landscaping and birds, and perched on a bank with the soothing sounds of rushing water below. The owners Annette and Herbie got us settled in our rustic cabin and gave us ideas for dinner in nearby Guapiles.

After a very restful night we had a good breakfast prepared to order with care, plus a conversation with Herbie. He recommended a short walk up the access road to a swimming pool on the Rio Blanco which we enjoyed. Lots of birds along the way! Back at the lodge we photographed a blue jeans frog and saw toucans and mot mots. For nature nuts like us this was great!

A very nice property and gracious hosts that I heartily recommend!

Room Tip: The cabins all look great!

We arrived at midnight and were greeted warmly and settled into three days of a most beautiful setting in the Costa Rican Rainforest. We loved our conversations with Herbie and Annette, the owners. Our cabin was large, airy and very comfortable. Breakfast was customized for us. We received directions to special interest sites and enjoyed ourselves very, very much.

Room Tip: There are both cabins in private natural settings and also rooms depending on how much pace you want...

This place is absolutely terrific. North Dallas it ain't, and never will be. Annette and Herbie are a Dutch couple who came to Costa Rica to life in the rainforest nine years ago. They bought this existing place, and have made it absolutely delightful.

We spent three nights here before continuing on for a week-long tall-ship cruise.

Oiled wood floor in the cabin; half walls with screen to the roof/ceiling; curtains for privacy; cabins spaced apart for quiet. We came from Texas in December . . . used a blanket the first night, then just the sheet thereafter. Glorious climate in December. River roils rowdy nearby, but, again, we're from Texas and loved it. Hand-lettered sign in bathroom (only door inside the cabin) explains the relationship between volume of water and heat of water. Worked just fine for us.

One of the selling points for us was that there is a bathroom in every cabin and room. (We selected a cabin.)

Half a day to Limon on Caribbean coast, then on to Cahuita National Park (miles-long beach) and the Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica. A couple of days later we headed across to Caldera on the Pacific Coast for a sailing cruse up to Nicaragua. Again, only half a day.

Nearby Guapiles is a rural market town. Herby does -all- the construction around the place. This is not a sophisticated mirror-ball-disco place. It's quiet and calm and refreshing.

These are nice people.

We plan to come back. At four hours from Dallas, this place is close enough for a four-day weekend.

Photos later if the system will let me edit after the fact.

Room Tip: Four cabins; two rooms. Each has its own toilet and shower. We loved to sit on the cabin porch and...

Casa Rio Blanco is a charming and comfortable paradise. When we were researching our trip, we carefully read the pro’s and con’s cited by others, and decided to take a gamble. It was delightful! GO THERE. It is a great place, with nice people and an incredible location. We often stay at B&Bs and small hotels and agree with most of the other reviewers on Casa Rio Blanco’s many positive attributes. The hosts, Annette and Herbie, made our 2 nights there wonderful. They are helpful, generous, and contributed to a great experience. All the cabins face into dense treetops overlooking the river below. You see trees, vines, ferns, and flowers from your bedroom. At night the only light as we peered into the trees from bed came from fireflies, and the sounds were a combination of rain, the rushing river and frog calls varying from little jingle bells to cell phone tones. Magical. Waking up to those sounds plus unusual bird calls was just as nice. Indescribable. The bed was the biggest we had in Costa Rica, and the bathroom was well designed with a good hot shower. No problem with bugs. Casa Rio Blanco is a great eco-lodge, better described as quaint than rustic, and a good compromise if you are looking for nice amenities in a location that feels far off the beaten path. It’s a safe, inviting place. We had a rental car and parked it inside the compound behind their gate. The location affords quick access to a decent restaurant, the Ponderosa, on the main highway, Route 32. There is also a small market there for whatever you need.
Casa Rio Blanco feels a world apart from the main road, and we enjoyed some beautiful hikes along trails through neighboring farmland and forests. We were in Cabin #1 and had some wifi, although reception is better in the main lounge and dining area.
As others have said, Annette and Herbie provide a good breakfast, and tasty, optional dinner. Keep in mind that payment is in cash, so plan ahead. Of all the places we stayed on our trips to Costa Rica, this had a uniquely relaxing environment. Even a rainstorm can be a magical experience here.

Room Tip: Cabin #1 is within view of the main building and has some wifi reception. The cabins are laid out i...

First of all, if you are on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica you are not looking for, nor will find, upscale posh hotels... if you are, you will be horribly upset. The Caribbean side of Costa Rica is much more like it 'used to be' here in CR - small family run places with a lot of rustic charm. Rio Blanco is such a place. Run by Dutch ( and South African) expats, this is a great little place to stop over on the way to the coast, or if you are doing the tourist attractions nearby. They have nice rustic cabinas to stay in, and offer a family-style dinner if you want for a really nice price. Half the fun is eating with the other guests - we are from the US but live in Costa Rica and there were other Americans, Costa Ricans and Spaniards there. There is not a lot nearby, so I would suggest it! As vegetarians we are always pleased when we can be accommodated and we were served a nice dinner. The hosts are great fun and really helpful - Annette is a whole lot of fun - a big personality- and her husband is a great host too, and very knowledgable as a birder. Walking around either up the road , or up the hill gives you an opportunity to get in some really nice birding and on the hill, weather permitting, some nice views. The cabinas are basic and rustic, but that is what you are looking for, yes?? And ask for Cabina 1 - we had a beautiful Long-tailed Hermit Hummingbird sleep outside our window all night - a great sight. All-in-all a fun place .
