Casa Rio Blanco is a charming and comfortable paradise. When we were researching our trip, we carefully read the pro’s and con’s cited by others, and decided to take a gamble. It was delightful! GO THERE. It is a great place, with nice people and an incredible location. We often stay at B&Bs and small hotels and agree with most of the other reviewers on Casa Rio Blanco’s many positive attributes. The hosts, Annette and Herbie, made our 2 nights there wonderful. They are helpful, generous, and contributed to a great experience. All the cabins face into dense treetops overlooking the river below. You see trees, vines, ferns, and flowers from your bedroom. At night the only light as we peered into the trees from bed came from fireflies, and the sounds were a combination of rain, the rushing river and frog calls varying from little jingle bells to cell phone tones. Magical. Waking up to those sounds plus unusual bird calls was just as nice. Indescribable. The bed was the biggest we had in Costa Rica, and the bathroom was well designed with a good hot shower. No problem with bugs. Casa Rio Blanco is a great eco-lodge, better described as quaint than rustic, and a good compromise if you are looking for nice amenities in a location that feels far off the beaten path. It’s a safe, inviting place. We had a rental car and parked it inside the compound behind their gate. The location affords quick access to a decent restaurant, the Ponderosa, on the main highway, Route 32. There is also a small market there for whatever you need.
Casa Rio Blanco feels a world apart from the main road, and we enjoyed some beautiful hikes along trails through neighboring farmland and forests. We were in Cabin #1 and had some wifi, although reception is better in the main lounge and dining area.
As others have said, Annette and Herbie provide a good breakfast, and tasty, optional dinner. Keep in mind that payment is in cash, so plan ahead. Of all the places we stayed on our trips to Costa Rica, this had a uniquely relaxing environment. Even a rainstorm can be a magical experience here.

Room Tip: Cabin #1 is within view of the main building and has some wifi reception. The cabins are laid out i...

First of all, if you are on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica you are not looking for, nor will find, upscale posh hotels... if you are, you will be horribly upset. The Caribbean side of Costa Rica is much more like it 'used to be' here in CR - small family run places with a lot of rustic charm. Rio Blanco is such a place. Run by Dutch ( and South African) expats, this is a great little place to stop over on the way to the coast, or if you are doing the tourist attractions nearby. They have nice rustic cabinas to stay in, and offer a family-style dinner if you want for a really nice price. Half the fun is eating with the other guests - we are from the US but live in Costa Rica and there were other Americans, Costa Ricans and Spaniards there. There is not a lot nearby, so I would suggest it! As vegetarians we are always pleased when we can be accommodated and we were served a nice dinner. The hosts are great fun and really helpful - Annette is a whole lot of fun - a big personality- and her husband is a great host too, and very knowledgable as a birder. Walking around either up the road , or up the hill gives you an opportunity to get in some really nice birding and on the hill, weather permitting, some nice views. The cabinas are basic and rustic, but that is what you are looking for, yes?? And ask for Cabina 1 - we had a beautiful Long-tailed Hermit Hummingbird sleep outside our window all night - a great sight. All-in-all a fun place .

If you are looking for 3 or 4 star accommodation, do not go here! This facility is surrounded by nature with birds, frogs, and other creatures plus a river that rages especially after the evening heavy rains & you may share your cabin with insects & wood chewing borer. It is extremely rustic! The noise of the river is deafening. Herbie was happy to search for frogs with us, and alert us to the tucans as they flew in, we never got to see them tho, perhaps they were not coming our way that day. But we enjoyed chatting with Herbie about the surroundings and what could be found in the gardens. Annette arranged a couple of amazing trips for us: one white water rafting and the other a trip to Torteguero NP. Both were so enjoyable. We never had a car, so we found ourselves walking up and down the road several times, beit to meet with transportation - this could be a problem for some people - or for a meal. We had torches so it was not an issue for us. We loved swimming in the river, but as Herbie explained you needed to monitor changes in water levels as water does rush down very fast when rains are present up in the mountains. There is a wonderful restaurant down at the bottom of the road, over the bridge, across from the service station. We had great meals there at a most reasonable cost, 10,000 colones for two including drinks.

My fiance and I stayed here for (regrettably) only one night, along with my nine year old daughter. The owners, Herbie and Annette were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. They helped us set up our tour of the rain forest and let us use their discount. Horse back riding and swimming in the cool, crystal clear river is another fun option for family-friendly activities. The grounds were bursting with beautiful tropical flowers and butterflies. The cabins were pleasantly rustic and clean, and the sounds of the river and the surrounding nature were amazing. Annette cooked as a filling and tasty organic meal, followed by a hearty breakfast. She is talkative, friendly and full of wonderful advice for travelers! If you are a nature-lover who likes a personable touch, this is the perfect place for you!!

As others have mentioned, we chose Casa Rio Blanco as a very quick stopover on our way from La Fortuna to the Caribbean coast. I did regret not having a bit more time here, especially since it rained for about 12 hours straight while we were there.

At any rate, the property is absolutely gorgeous, with swarms of butterflies to greet you, a great garden, small waterfall, and nice lodge. As mentioned, Annette was very welcoming. You do feel like you are sleeping right in the jungle, which on our night took some getting used to since there was a lot of loud rain, thunder and lightning. But I do wish we had stayed a bit longer to hike or view some more wildlife in the area.

Room Tip: We stayed in a cabin with a king bed (largest bed we had in CR), bunk beds, and a single, perfect fo...

My boyfriend and I stayed at Casa Rio Blanco for one night in May (we were going from La Fortuna to Puerto Viejo and wanted to make a stop near Guapilès to experience the Rainforest Adventures in Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo).
The place is far from the road and we had a really warm welcome at our arrival. The owner, Herbie (Annette was on a trip), is a wonderful man. He helped us reserve the Rainforest Adventures and gave us very useful advices. At night, he cooked us the BEST coconut rice we ever tasted (we've been reproducing his recipe to impress our friends haha).
Yes, we had a dead beetle stucked between the wall and the net. Yes, my boyfriend saw a HUGE bug in the bathroom. Yes, small ants were passing next to our bed all night long. Despite all that, we keep wonderful memories of our stay. We wanted to feel far from home, and that's what we've got!
Also, this place looks truely like a piece of paradise. To fall asleep to the sounds of water and frogs is magical, and you have to experience it at least once.
So if you're not too scared about all that and you think you can handle a night in the wild, book now, you'll be glad you did. It's really a nice adventure out of your comfort zone.
