My wife and I stayed for two nights in this attractive village on the Oxfordshire / Northamptonshire border. Like many other guests, we took advantage of a Travel Zoo offer – two night’s bed, breakfast and dinner for under £200. We elected for a superior bedroom for a small supplement. Our room was large with an additional sitting area. There was plenty of storage, ample refreshments and two TVs in the room. The wi-fi worked perfectly. The bathroom was of a good size, although a lick of paint would have freshened up its appearance. There was ample hot water at a good pressure. There were basic toiletries provided.
In the evenings, we ate in the restaurant. The food was of an extremely high standard. The menus, although not extensive, provided ample variety. It was a little disappointing to find that the crockery was sometimes chipped – I experienced this phenomenon on seven different occasions which seemed rather excessive for a two night stay.
Our stay included anything from the a la carte dinner on the first night, a selection from the market dinner menu on the second night and breakfast on both days. The breakfast again was of a very high standard – although the cooked options were either full English or smoked haddock with a poached egg. There was also the usual fruit, yoghurts and cereals.
We thought the service was generally attentive the whole stay represented a bargain. We also took advantage of the free entry to Blenheim Palace on our departure day. This was an appealing bonus.
There were some aspects of our stay that were a little less than perfect which prevented us from giving our stay a ‘5’ rating – 4.5 would be more appropriate. These included a bed cover that was slightly stained, as well as the aforementioned chipped crockery. Such deficiencies could easily be rectified to enhance the feel good factor.
Special mention should be given to the young receptionist who greeted us on our arrival and took a genuine interest in our wellbeing. Likewise, the manager was very hands-on. The friendly atmosphere adds considerably to the charm of staying in this country hotel.
