“Average, but poor value for money”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2011

Attended a friends wedding in the village and this hotel was the closest, the revues looked OK so we booked it. Our first impression was what a great location and our room was of the central court yard / car park area (Room 16). However inside the room there was a strong smell of damp, no toilet roll in the bathroom and hairs in the shower tray ... not a great start when paying £125 for 1 night.

Had a great night at the wedding and slept well back in the Hotel.

The breakfast area was busy with only 2 staff serving, ample for when the hotel is partially occupied but not when it appeared to be very busy. After about a 10min wait our order was taken and we were offered Tea / Coffee. About 20 mins later a 'full english' arrived with one under cooked cold sausage, raw fried potatoes, luke warm beans, 2 rashers of fatty bacon dripping in cooking fat, tomato, a few mushrooms and 1/2 a small slice of black pudding. .... not great. We had no further offer of tea / coffee throughout our breakfast nor were asked if all was well.

On checking out I presented our room card and asked to pay the bill, the lady serving on reception never smiled, never make eye contact or attempted any pleasantries, not good customer service when you have just handed over £125.

Overall the rooms where adequate, the service poor, food poor and value for money average.

Would we go back .... no
Would we recommend ..... no
Did the experience WOW us .... no

Dear Guest

Thank you for submitting a review of our hotel and I am sorry that you were disappointed with your stay. We are very proud of our facilities and service and have had many positive comments. What we wanted was a pleasant room in a nice hotel with good food - a place where we could just relax after a busy day. This hotel ticked all our boxes: friendly, attentive (but not intrusive) staff; lovely room; great food in the restaurant; good decor throughout and well-situated for our activities at Silverstone (15-20 minutes away by car).
Having enjoyed a fabulous evening meal in the restaurant, the only downside was that we left way too early for breakfast. That's not a criticism of the hotel (we left at 0645 on the Sunday morning) it's just that we had such a lovely meal on the Saturday evening that we were both disappointed not to be able to enjoy the breakfast!
The hotel itself is situated in a quiet village in rural Oxfordshire but with good road links and I'm sure that we'll be enjoying a return visit sometime.

Comfortable hotel with limited parking. Very helpful staff and excellent restaurant.
Definitely worth a visit!

Staff were friendly and helpful. We arrived early but were able to check in as the room was ready. We had booked a 'premier' suite, though I'm not sure quite what qualifies it as 'premier'. The room had a large bed, flat screen tv with freeview, tea and coffee making facilities and a small bathroom. The additional sitting room was sparse to say the least. A small, uncomfortable settee and matching armchair were the only thing in the room (apart from another tv on the wall (smaller than the tv in the bedroom). There was no dining table or even a coffee table. It reminded us of a living room in student halls. If that is the only difference between a standard room and a premier suite, then it's certainly not worth the extra £30 a night.
The hotel has lots of character including authentic beams in our suite. Unfortunately the recent refurbishment didn't cover the floorboards of the suite above - the creaking was very loud with every single footstep above. It was also easy to hear the tv and muted conversations of other rooms.
The hotel website advertises 'secure parking' in the courtyard - for two out of our three nights at the hotel we had to leave our car on the main road as the car park was full - there are about 10 parking spaces for approx 20 suites - not sure how all the guests are supposed to make use of the secure car park.
The website also offers some misleading information - one page suggests they have skyTV where another suggests it is digital TV. It is only a small thing but the hotel only offers freeview (but that is good enough - just could do with clarity).
Restaurant was good. Nice ambiance and good food. Seemed a little pricy, but as I say, the food was good and it was busy every night we were there so can't really have any complaints there. Breakfast was included in room rate, but would have been very expensive if not - nearly £12 for cereal, toast and tea. Advertised as including a platter of cold meats an cheeses, but three mornings went by with no sign of them.
All in all, for a suite costing £156 per night we were left very unimpressed. We would compare it to a travelodge with a nice restaurant attached, beams in the ceiling, and an empty/useless living area thrown in. Worth the extra £100+ a night more than a travelodge? Certainly not!

Room Tip: Premier suite is not worth the extra money

This hotel is set in a very pretty village and is convenient for exploring the surrounding countryside which has many typical English attractions. However we stayed there as it is fairly close to Silverstone racing cicuit and being west of the M1 motorway access to the circuit is much easier.

The building appears to be a converted and modernised old coach house and from the front looks very attractive, you enter under a large archway into a courtyard area which is surrounded by accomodation units. Our room was no.4 in the older part of the complex and was bright and clean and of a good size, the only drawback being that the room was L shaped the owners had not bothered to fit a door to the bathroom area, not a huge problem as it was out of sight but not out of earshot!

The restaurant served food of a fairly good quality at what we felt were reasonable prices as were the wines on offer. The barman and waiter/maitre'd,Gary is a hardworking and personable young man who seems to run the dining room well despite his manager who was a little to keen to please, but not al the time depending o how busy they were.Apart from the evening meals a hearty full English breakfast is available along with the usual selection of cereals, toast croissant etc.

We did feel the Cartwright was a little over priced but for this part of the world you could do a lot worse than stay here. We would go back again because of its situation and pleasant staff.

The hotel offers free wi-fi but we couldn't get a good signal so don't rely on that part of the facilities available

We didn't stay at the Hotel but it appeared to have a nice ambience and we had a warm welcome from the reception staff. There was a set menu in tyhe restaurant which was reasonably priced but if you were ordering from the A la Carte then the main courses were over £20.00 which we thought was expensive for what was a Bistro type atmosphere and average service.

Let me start off by saying that the general manager Caroline Parkes is the epitome of the word welcoming and can't do enough for you but I did notice that she does too much. Not only was she running the desk, she was taking orders and delivering them at mealtimes and on one occasion I came across her polishing the cutlery. On Sunday morning when I went out to defrost my car at 8am she was picking up cigarette butts in the smokers corner which illustrates what lets this hotel down, the housekeeping. If it was up to scratch she would be able to manage which should be her only role as general manager. If the housekeeping was good there wouldn't have been hairs in the bath and stains on the bathroom walls when we arrived. The bed was not made on the second day and the chrome bath fittings not cleaned from our usage. The used coffee cup was not replaced with a clean one nor were the milk pots replaced. At breakfast I had to ask for a dirty tea cup to be replaced. It had been throught the dishwasher but was still stained which should have been picked up by whoever set the tables. These are the little things that guests notice and which let the hotel down as a whole.
The hotel itself is very pleasant, drive in through the arched entrance and the rooms are set around a courtyard and made of Cotswold stone. Our executive room was like a small cottage and very cosy. The staff are all very young and friendly, the food was generally very good and drinks prices were more like a pub than a hotel. The bar is very cosy but on Saturday night they played the same Lighthouse Family cd for four hours!! Like I said, its the little things that let it down. I would like to have rated this hotel at 3.5 out of five but it was not cheap and at that price should have been spot on so I have only gone for 3 rather than a 4.
