Mafigeni Safari Lodge
Reviewed February 20, 2012

Our family had a wonderful 10 days at Mafigeni. The staff, dining, laundry service, etc. were excellent. The location allowed us to visit several animal rehab areas outside of Hoedspruit, God's Window, Kings Walden Garden, Kaross Embroidery, Vervet Monkey Foundation and more, all on day trips. We had our own vehicle for these, but enjoyed game drives on the Mafigeni property, which were provided.
The pool is small, but lovely, however, we were too busy to enjoy it. We viewed, ostrich, various antelope, giraffe, Cape buffalo, wildebeast, and many bird varieties. I would recommend this lodge for families or couples since the lodging is in separate bungalows. The staff is very welcoming and will tailor activities for you.

What a great weekend we had at Mafigeni! The units are great, the setting beautiful and the staff wonderful. The dinners were very special with all the guests seated around a giant dining table. New friends were made and Steven's cuisine is out of this world. The staff went to great lengths to ensure that we feel welcome and comfortable. We will certainly be returning.

We had a magical stay at the Mafigeni Safari Lodge. We were not there for hunting, but used it as a base to explore various wildlife preserves and conservation centers in the area. It was perfectly located and the lodge itself is from “Out of Africa” with wild impala, kudu, waterbuck, and two ostriches strolling thru the grounds as you drive to the lodge. There is also a herd of TB-free cape buffalo. The rooms are very comfortable – with fans and A/C units – and individually furnished with fabulous African crafts, prints, maps and drawings. I shared a two bedroom/two bathroom cottage with a friend. My shower had a picture window looking into the trees and I had a private veranda for morning coffee and great bird watching. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with lovely spots to sit and read, have tea or a drink. The staff and service were very professional and, equally importantly, warm and welcoming. The cook is accomplished and a delightful person. The overall atmosphere is one of gracious, relaxed luxury. We found the other guests very interesting and excellent dinner companions.

Perfectly located for visiting the Vervet Monkey Foundation, Moholoholo Rehabilitation Center, Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, Jessica the hippo, Tshukudu Game Lodge, and Kings Walden Garden. And a good place to jump into Kruger Park. Also close to the Kaross embroidery center and the Gooding and Gooding silk showroom. Highly recommend the Hat and Creek restaurant in Hoedspruit and the Gooding silk restaurant for lunch.

I am responding to the review left by Jckruger. Mafigeni Lodge is a very personalised lodge, and I'm surprised that it is stated that "when you arrive so called unexpected, you are left unwelcomed." Mr Kruger was never left unwelcomed, in fact, after checking in, he was personally addressed by the owner of the lodge, who welcomed the couple and invited them to relax and make themselves at home. Furthermore, staff went out of their way to appeal to the couple to join the other guests for dinner, instead of remaining holed up in their room. Special arrangements were made by management for a private and romantic bush dinner, as well as a complimentary game drive for the guests, but unfortunately they had left some time during the night/early hours of the morning without announcing their departure and were not able to take advantage of the offer. Rooms are checked and cleaned daily and definately do not smell stale and are not dusty. Perhaps the guest mistook the smell of persian carpets and a thatch grass roof as a stale and dusty room? Mafigeni staff are all highly attentive to all guests at the lodge and there are many activities offered on the premises, including horse riding, game drives, guided nature walks, fishing, target shooting, clay shooting, use of the pool, to name but a few. If Mr and Mrs Kruger had stayed longer than 12 hours, they would have experienced a memorable stay and not the inaccurate account as they have published.

Bookings are a mess, when you arrive so called unexpected, you are left unwelcomed. The rooms smell stale and are dusty, the staff have no interest in the guests, there are nothing to do onsite. There are much better and cheaper accommodation available in the area. This place will never see me again.
