I just got back from a month with Askari. My time at there was absolutely amazing. It’s one thing to go on a safari and see African animals but this program gives you the unique experience of actually working to help run the reserve while enjoying the same sights (and many others). The volunteer house is lovely, the staff is so friendly and knowledgeable, the activities are a blast, the experience is unforgettable! You can read about my experience on my blog at http://goingplaces.blog.usf.edu/?tag=south-africa-summer-2012

If you are looking for a holiday with a difference, then you can’t pick a more suitable place than Askari. From the friendliness of the staff to activities planned, they’ve got it spot on. There’s a good range of activities from researching herbivore numbers to cutting down and injecting alien plants. Cheetah tracking is very exciting, to know just how close you are to the magnificent animals is just amazing. There is a huge variety of animals to see on your many trips out, and as it's a Conservation area and not just a "game reserve" the sightings are very personal, can be as long as you want them to be, AND, best of all, there are no other vehicles and people around to spoil any views or pictures, nor indeed to shorten your time watching the magnificent creates on the reserve.

Activities are broken up during the day so there is always an array of different and enjoyable tings to do. Always expect the unexpected too. You NEVER know what you will see or hear. The sleep out is lots of fun with plenty of nocturnal animals to be seen and heard.

The house itself is clean, tidy and well looked after by Bongani who will also do washing twice per week. The food is excellent, with a wide variety of choices to suit all taste buds. The staff, both at Askari and the reserve management team are friendly, very welcoming and very knowledgeable. There’s nothing that is too much trouble for them and there’s no such thing as asking too many questions, which is great. If you want an exciting holiday, whilst helping to preserve Africa as it should be, then look no further – you’ve found it!

The Askari Conservation Programme has been a life changing experience. You get to do various activities that are key to the success of conserving the Pidwa Wilderness Reserve. There is more to conservation than just collecting flora and fauna data, for instance, removal of invasive species, collecting garbage, protecting trees from elephant etc. are all key components that are important and you learn this here. The accommodations are awesome, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the area is breathtaking. The skills and knowledge I have gained here is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. It is rare to see successful conservation in action.

My stay here at Askari has been an eye opening experience. It has given me some insight into how conservation in South Africa works. I also believe that this may be a further career move for me. The programs here were fun and hard combining knowledge and physical abilities. Activities such as the cheetah and brown hyaena telemetry have given me insight into how the animals live there day to day lives in the veld. I could go on all day, Askari is one of a kind program and everyone should take part at one point in their lives.

I spent over 3 weeks with the Askari team and volunteers exploring the wilderness through contributing to conservation projects and respectfully witnessing wildlife in their natural habitat. The knowledge and dedication of the staff ensure that you learn as you contribute and experience wonders Africa. Each day is filled with activities contributing to the overall health of the reserve and ensuring that the wildlife live in as natural habitat as possible. You can't go wrong with Askari! Book your trip now! I am looking forward to returning this next year at some point.

Room Tip: You have a choice of staying in a room with others or in a private room (if available). Both are very nice accommodations. The volunteer house is kept very clean. There is electricity and hot water.
