“The best weekend outing from New Delhi,India”
Reviewed July 22, 2010

I have been to Lansdowne from New Delhi, which is around 260km away and is the best possible place for weekend outing for mental peace and time together with family and friends.

There are excellent Garhwal Tourist Bunglows and private resorts, like River dale etc which are excellent hotels and resorts.

Travel by road is comfortable and this is a Contonment area which is clean and without mess of a Propoer Hill station, it is peaceful and safe with excellent views picturously and nice hill side places.

“Oak and pine land”
Reviewed June 11, 2010

Lansdowne is a poem in pine and oaks. It is the best place to do the best thing in the world, "nothing". The serpentine road that leads to lansdowne from kotdwara is no less a beauty, and behold, when you enter the boundary of the township, the greenery mesmerizes you. Kudos to garhwal rifles for maintaining the place green and clean. The place is specially suitable for a few class of men: Writer, Birder, Historian, Architect, Painter and the one who wants to get away from the madness of life (I suppose that includes everyone). Agreed, there is not much to see, but that is what makes this place iresistible: the lack of purpose, when you visit here. But if you are not a total sloth there is always a trek to "Bhulla lake" or "Sunrise point". And then there are these magnificient English cottages, which give an ancient and mighty feel to this place; also associated with them are spooky ghost stories. But if these do not allue you, then there is the climate silly. It is salubriuous, no extremes, except in the month of December and January. And if this is not enough to entice you, there are stars, oh so many of them, so near and so untouched by layers of pollution. But my advice, always carry light woolens and always make hotel booking in advance. Cheers

“Lansdowne - a beautiful hillstation in uttarakhand”
Reviewed May 2, 2010

Serene and unspoilt, Lansdowne is a hill station in the secluded reaches of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by beautiful oak, silver fir, spruce, bamboo and pine forests, it is a summer getaway for nature lovers and romantics. This hilly town was established as a British cantonment in 1887 and named in honour of the Earl of Lansdowne, the Viceroy of India (1888-1894). Now it is the headquarters of the famous Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army. You won't find much of popular tourism here and it is as if the town intends to preserve its local charm and sanctity.

“Lansdowne Trip (13-14-Feb-2010)”
Reviewed February 23, 2010

Lansdowne .. An Old World Charm…Free of Pollution..Metro Hussle Fussle and all that stuff..This is the place only to Find yourself and Unwind…
Let;s start the Journey…..Okay-the route is ->
Meerut -> Enter inside city -> Bijnore -> Najibabad -> Kotdwar -> Dugadda -> Lansdowne .
We hired a Indica Taxi for this trip , Me and Priya and my Friend and his Wife. 4 people can be easily and comfortably accommodated in this Tata product so we hired it.
Guys , please note , once you reach Meerut, Enter inside the city to take a right through Meerut town up-to Begum Bridge and turn RIGHT on the Mawana road ( NH 119 ).
On the cut , we took our first halt and driver had his first Tea of the Journey…It was also cold outside.
On our journey towards Bijnore , we passed from Ganges Bridges and Our driver Suman Singh suddenly stopped the vehicle in between , asked Saurabh to take a coin from his pocket, touch everyone's hand and then drop it in Holy Ganges , This is what we believe as Blessings and Chadhavaa (Not many Drivers suggest this, they are too professional,We were lucky though)..
From Meerut till our Final Destination , Road is Single but is very well maintained and is free of Traffic , of course you see some Bullock-Carts and Trucks in between but overall very nice road to drive.

...A river follows you right from the start of your hilly drive .
Last 1 hour was full of breathtaking Mountain Views , Fresh Aroma of Pine Trees , Roadside Village Scenery, and some nice Road curves which made me sick :( (It always happens with me when i m not driving)..
We reached Lansdowne , this is quiet and so well hidden that you only realize you’re there when you turn past the gates of the elegant Gadhwal Rifles Cantonment .....I already made arrangements for our stay at Anand Retreat Jungle Resort…
This place is 2.5 km away from the main road (ask anyone , they all know).. the road is not good BUT it;s adventure to drive on this road since it's not a concrete one and you would find it difficult if you see a vehicle coming from opposite direction...That's Thrill for who loves Driving ..Isn't It ??
We reached , It looked awesome , Nice cottages , good reception , Lots of Free area , a Basket Ball court ,Badminton Court , Swimming Pools ,
Every cottage has it's own little Out garden , This is the place we were looking for !!! As soon as we stepped in , We heard a Lot of voices and
We ordered for some Parathe , 2 Cutlet and Chai..
Amazing hit --> The guy served 1 cutlet and then said Breakfast order is over (Bhai agar time over to 1 Cutlet kyun diya ? dono nhi deta)…...The food and taste was decent and so were the Rates.
After the breakfast , we decided just to laze around for couple of hours before hitting Lansdowne. After so much time , I enjoyed Sun Light Like anything !! The peace and Tranquility was Awesome..
You could feel sun is watching you amidst thick Pine forest and nature is throwing cool breeze on you every now and then to make you feel Top of the world.
..Suggestion - don't rush for sight-seeing at any hill-station on day you reach. take a little nap so you are over with travel hangover and then you can enjoy for what you are spending :)
..OK-Time to get up and go into the town which is named after British time Viceroy of India Lord Lansdowne .. This place has the Command Office of the Garhwal Rifles division of Indian Army..
We started from resort to Town around 3pm,
First destination was 'Bhim Pakora"..Myth says it has bee placed by Bhim...You can move it BUT you can't drop it from over.
Rock was big but I managed to move it .. Well any strong person can do that :))
Next was Army museum , We thought of dropping the taxi at Gandhi Chowk , which is the center point of the Lansdowne town , but locals suggested us that the stretch is 3km long and if you've a vehicle then take it along as walking can make you sweat :)..
Lansdowne first sight seeing was this Church which is Built in the year 1896. St Marry’s Church First time , i went inside the Church , it was so peaceful..
Next destination was St.John's church , they show a video for 20 min. inside the church which covers the Present/Past/History/Achievements of Garhwal Rifles...This was another unique thing which i noticed amongst cantonment Hill stations..
The Video inside was Great and full of Energy, We felt proud on seeing the achievements of Garhwal Rifles...Charges 10 Rs. Only.
The road towards our final destination was very nice. Covered with thick pine and Oak forest and no vehicles almost.
It was started getting colder On our way to Tip-in-op. .
This is a small open area with 2-3 benches placed. The best thing about this place is that it is on highest altitude of Lansdowne and 1 Clear day you can see the Mighty Himalayan Peaks (What a Sight It can be which we missed courtesy Fog and Clouds).....
We had some snaps here and proceeded to GMVN Rest House cafe which is just next to Tip-in-Top..This place can be booked via GMVN site and believe me the Huts/Cottages here were truly awesome..They also had 2 Tree-houses . At the rest house cafe , It was very very cold , we started to shiver since the place is at an altitude of 2092 mtr. We ordered.. Maggi , Egg Omlette , Coffee , Tea with Biscuits, Butter Toast and some Chips.. Menu not that interesting but since we didn't anything in our lunch so everyone just attacked the Food.. .. Now , time to go back as we were full of Stomach and it;s Cold and we are exhaust by now and we wanted to save our energy for Evening masti !!
Time to Go back…Mid way , suddenly we stopped at a view point (every place on Hill is a View Point) to catch the beauty and romantic moments of Sunset .. I've always Liked the Sunset and this was more special since i was with my Life watching the sky going orange. One of my best Sunset Pics .... Really Beautiful !!!
Boarded the cab and came back to the Jungle Resort.. Born-fire arrangements were waiting for us in the evening..
Fire always gives you a special feeling especially when you are with your family and nice cold weather.. Ordered some snacks , I had my Pag , Priya Roli and Saurabh had Pepsi .. and we started to enjoy .. Talk... Laugh... Play Dumb Charades.. Share our Experiences... In between sound of Breeze passing from the Pine Trees added glamor to the Born-fire.
The sound feels like there is a waterfall nearby. Guess , what we had in our dinner. It was Arhar Ki Daal , Rice , Pyaaz and Mirchi !! You love this when you are far from your home but still feeling cozy and having food which taste like home cooked food....
It was a amazing feeling at night when we entered back to our Cottages.. After sitting for around 2.5 hrs. in-front of Born-fire now adjusting in the Cold Blanket :( ...Our cottage had some recent wood work done so it was all fresh pine pine feeling..another 30 min. and then 11pm..finally we signed-off for the day..Indeed a Wonderful Day!! Hoping next day would bring many more nice and happy moments!!
Sunday Morning !!! 14th Feb!! Bright Sun Shine !! Nice cold weather !! Hot Cup of Coffee served by your beloved !! You think any better way to start the day marked as Valentine's day ?
Woke up around 10:30am , Love was in the Air , so we also let ourselves free flow in the Air ...
Today , the group of 27 ppl left early , So it was very quite and Relaxed...I wished my stay would've started from today :)
Ask me, what it feels after having a Cold Water bath !! Freshness at it;s Best!!Try once!!
ok- we got ready by 12:30...plan was to do a small Jungle Trek which is very fascinating , come back to Resort , have Lunch in the Open Restaurant , depart for Delhi and in between visit Garhwal Rifles Museum .. Plan was great and approved by everyone !!
So , started our Jungle Trek , we hired a local boy working in the Resort who guided us in the trek , midway he stopped and showed some interesting things .. We saw Snow !!!! ..We also saw Live Tiger Cave.. Believe me.. we saw it from a very narrow distance .almost 200 Mtr..everyone was insisting on getting inside , i asked Mr.Tiger if we can visit his place but he didn't showed any interest in the visitors instead he fixed a board outside his Cave "Do not Disturb"...that says it all..
Jungle Trek is one thing that we always do on every hill station and always enjoy , This is the place where we start feeling that We should settle down here , build our own Resort , I promise That's my Long term Goal..
Jungle trek was done , we were exhausted , started feeling hungry , returned back to Resort, Food was ready ..
Time for Lunch, Menu - Daal , Paneer Bhurji, Egg Curry,Veg Pulao, Garam Phulka and Salad...Special Thing about this Lunch was that We had it on a wooden sitting in Open Air..
One of the best meals i had on any resort.. .. We settled the Bill , gave boy some Tips (Are the staff served us well )....Had some last Group pics , Captured the Sight in our eyes and headed back to Delhi with some very good moments..
Everyone was so happy.. that's Worth IT !!! .. On our way back , we decided to give a last shot to The Darwan Singh Sangrahalaya , but unfortunately IT was Closed as it is on Every Sunday .. May be this is another reason , Why we will come back to Lansdowne , Who knows ! .. We took some snaps from Outside , and finally headed back for Delhi.. Now , everyone was quite Lazing in the taxi since we wanted to feel Hills as much as we can ..We left kotdwar around 4:30 and started talking only once we entered Kotdwar where Hills end..Return took us around 6.5 Hours due to the Traffic BUT we were okay with IT, Since past 2 days were fantastic.. Today is 8th day since i m back from Lansdowne , I can still feel the majestic beauty of the Mountains.. ............. .
