Hotel Restaurant Chastrusse
Certificate of Excellence

We walked along to the restaurant at this hotel from where we were staying in Nadaillac de Rouges. It was a warm evening in early September so we sat on the terrace. We chose the set menu at 25 Euros and it was the best food we had in the whole holiday. Delicious soup, a superb gizzard salad (which was actually large enough to have on its own for lunch!), together with the traditional confit duck, cheeses and prune and armagnac tart. Delightful.

We stopped at Chastrusse on our way down from Paris to Cahors because we prefer authentic, one-of-a-kind places over big chain hotels. These independant businesses are unfortunately disappearing one after the other like "La Bougnate" in Blesle (a TripAdvisor great address) that closed between the time we reserved and the day we were supposed to arrive.
All reviewers rightly praise the Chastrusses warm welcome and their excellent, traditional cuisine, + the charm of eating dinner and breakfast on the terrasse. While I totally agree with them on this count, I don't when it comes to the hotel part. We had a room in the very simple building parallel to the big, nice pool, but did not experience discomfort, neither because of its (small) size, nor the alleged lack of ventilation (I admit the night was cool). Nor did any noise from other guests or whatever interfere with the superb quiet of the countryside. Perhaps we were lucky, but I rather think we had realistic expectations. It is, after all, a country place.
We would certainly consider coming back if we travelled again in that area.

As a restaurant this is probably the best food ever, and the courtyard where we ate was delightful. However we were very disappointed with our room, which was in a tiny breeze-block annexe, with barely enough room for a small double bed, absolutely stifling at night, with no aircon or even a fan. The towels were almost threadbare & not changed, but folded back on the towel rack, which resulted in them smelling awful the next day. The pool was nice but the surrounding area was unkept, the loungers were mostly broken & the mattresses were shabby, dirty & tatty. It was a real shame because the area is gorgeous, the hotel is off the beaten track & in a pretty location.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get a room in the annexe

We have stayed in this picture perfect town for two summers. Dining outside at the Restaurant Chastrussee late in the evening is a joy. The food is basic but tasty. The service friendly. The cassoulet is particularly good as is the omelette with cepes. The owner is also the mayor of the town,

I had intended to stay in Sarlat but decided it would be more interesting to stay in the country, and this hotel came up during my search.

It's a fairly small hotel, but the location is charming. Rooms are simply appointed. I found the majority of my room to be nice and clean but was put off by lots of cobwebs near the ceiling. This should be taken care of by the staff. The pain color of my room was very blah and I think some new paint, in a better color, would change the room(s) for the better.

Best part of the stay, however, was the restaurant, This is not cutting-edge French cuisine but rather dishes based on ingredients of the area, where duck is the primarily used item. There are, however, other very tasty menus items if duck is not your thing. I ordered the foie gras appetizer and the cassoulet main course. The foie gras was served with melon, tiny figs, toasted country bread and a small salad. The melon and the figs were truly amazing - bursting with real fruit flavors, not the bland, tasteless fruits so often found in the grocery. The foie gras was, as one might expect, unctuous and delicious.

The cassoulet was truly special. This is a dish I cook myself, and have had at many places over the years. Hands down, this was the most flavorful one I've ever had. I noticed that, in addition to the ubiquitous duck confit and garlic sausage, that the chef uses pork and lamb, which undoubtedly adds to the flavor.

They have a nice wine list yet I preferred to go for the house red which was very nice and very reasonably priced.

The only other quibble I had, regarding the hotel, was, if you leave your window open at night, be aware that you'll have to deal with mosquitoes. It would be nice if they considered doing some mosquito netting over the beds. A small touch that wouldn't break the bank and would add to the enjoyment of the stay. This is frequently a problem staying in country hotels.

But, five stars for the restaurant, in my opinion.
