Enzo's "La Vecchia Osteria" was the very first "real" authentic Tuscan eatery I went to on my very first visit to Italy and it is still the gold standard by which I judge others. The food is fresh, made with local rustic ingredients, and served in a perfect location with views over the surrounding countryside. Enzo is a wonderful host, greeting us warmly every time we returned. The delicious dishes that come from the kitchen continue to inspire me even now. I highly recommend the pasta with tomato and basil and olive oil - a simple and wonderful "prima" that is known to our family even now as "Enzo Pasta." Monterchi is a beautiful hillside town right on the border of Tuscany and Umbria, which we found as a perfect base for exploring the area.
