“We Fell in Love With Oyster”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

We fell in Love with Oyster Island as soon as we caught the quaint ferry across to the island.
We stayed in a deluxe Bamboo Bungalow. I was very impressed with the room. With 4 children under 10, its hard to find somewhere that that accomodate us all without spending a fortune, so this suited us perfectly! One child stayed next door with our friends and a set of bunks and cot was bought in for our other children. There was still plenty of room!
Although there is no Kids activities here the kids LOVED iT! They spent their days swimming, snorkelling, coming on tours with us and playing with the other kids on the island. It felt very safe for them to wander around and could swim right in front of our room.
We had no problem with the food here. Breakfast was simple but all you need. the bbq buffet was great!
Santo is Not cheap!! You pay for everything! Food and drinks are very expensive. We found a good supermarket in town to stock up on snacks and drinks ( and beer) which helped, but I would suggest bringing alot from home like muslie bars etc as it is heaps dearer on Santo.
We stayed for 5 nights on Oyster and still didnt see everything we wanted too. The weather was not too kind but it was still warm enough to swim. We really needed another few days to see everything.
We were thinking of using the babysitters one day but they looked a little young and inexperienced and not that interested in the kids so we didnt use them.
The staff are so lovely, you really warm to them. would be great to see them get involved in some evening activities with everyone.
All up we loved Oyster and if coming to Santo again I would probably stay here again. It was very relaxing and you really see some breathtaking scenery!

Room Tip: They all look beautiful!!

Oyster Island Resort is about a ½ hour drive from Santo’s airport and about 20 minutes from Luganville, Santo’s main town ... and that gets you to the point on the mainland where you ‘call’ for the ferry to come from the Island (perhaps about 100 metres) to pick you and your luggage up. When you arrive at the ferry point, give the gong a ding and it will be heard in the resort and the ferry will be there within 5 minutes. It’s a fun way to get there ... especially if its high tide and you need to take a few steps (ankle deep) through the water to get on to the ferry!

Oyster Island’s reception is right by the ferry landing within the covered, but open air restaurant. There are 11 bungalows ... we had booked number 11, the furthest from the restaurant ... and it was worth it. Only took a few minutes to walk there from the restaurant ... on a laid track through the well maintained gardens. Our deal included the accommodation and a good continental breakfast. The bungalow was excellent – comfortable, spacious and had a private but open air shower and separate steps leading straight into the water. It had a great deck overlooking the water, complete with a hammock! The deck was large enough for dinner – which the restaurant was very happy to provide – they even set up a proper dining table and chairs! So, ‘room service’ was no extra cost – just order anything off their excellent menu and they bring it down to you. The restaurant itself is good – very relaxed atmosphere, great location and a good varied and fresh menu.

We stayed on the Island for 4 nights which was good. Given its location, it might not be the most convenient accommodation but they do their best for you – like arranging any tours, taxis and even the best foot massage in the world (just ask Marie in the restaurant and she’ll book you in with her cousin). Your mobile phone is not likely to work on Oyster Island so let them arrange everything for you. They use Paradise Tours, an excellent local company.

Oyster Island isn’t a ‘regular’ resort – there is no pool or regular scheduled activity. However, you can hire a kayak, walk around the Island, go swimming and snorkelling, go on the Mt Hope ‘Waterfall’ Tour or simply relax. A walk around the Island is well worth it – just follow the coconut track! Going on the Mt Hope Waterfall tour is also an absolute ‘must- do’ thing. It is truly an amazing adventure! Also, ask the Island to arrange a day tour to Champagne Beach (this is excellent), a Blue Hole Tour and dinner in the town’s French restaurant, ‘Le Jardin des Saveurs’ – now that was definitely worth it! If you are a diver and haven’t arranged a trip, the Island will also do this for you. Nothing is any trouble for them.

For us, staying here was fine; but you might prefer a place closer to the town – depending what you really want to do while in Santo. Thanks to the friendly, efficient, excellent staff.

Room Tip: Just ask for Bungalow number 11!

My wife Nancy stayed three nights in August in one of the budget bungalows it was okay but the open windows could be a problem on a cold night, The main thing i liked about Oyster were the staff as they were the most friendly and switched on we encountered on our 2 weeks in Vanuatu which goes a long way when one is on holiday in such a beautiful place always smiling and helpful. The food was also as good if not better than most on santo and prices was pretty reasonable being so far from town,There is some pretty good snorkeling on the back side of the island and no people. We hired a car for a day and drove north to Velit bay Port orly, lonnoc bay and Champayne beach,Had crayfish at little paradise restaurant at port Orly probably the best beach on santo and if you see more than half a dozen cars for the day the roads busy,
We enjoyed Oyster island and Santo due to its quiet and very relaxing pace.

Positive points:
-Very nice resort.
-Well located on a beautiful landscapes.
-The restaurant is good (even if prices are expensive but this is quite normal for Vanuatu which is expensive).
-the staff is wonderful

Drawbacks :

-the first price bungalows are really not good. No windows or shutters so you have the wind which can be cold at night. The worse is that you may have many mosquitos in your bungalow (many holes between the wall and the roof) and they do not provide you with a mosquito net on the bed. Good way to catch malaria.
When leaving oyster we had dozens of mosquitos bites on our legs.

- you should get a rental car at the airport otherwise your are stuck to oyster and every excursion is nearly 90 euros/person (dive, millennium cave, champagne beach)
- restaurant can be very slow ( one night we had our meal 1hour and a half after ordering).

- after 8pm, everyone is sleeping (but it is often the case everywhere else in vanuatu)

-the hotel take a 5% additional fee if you pay by credit card

-canoes at the hotel are to be paid (25euros for 2)and they don't say it !!! First time go my life that i see that

-the management is not nice and do not care about their customers (they come to greet you only if there is a problem)-but once again the staff is wonderful.

We stayed for 5 nights in August in a deluxe bamboo bungalow.Everything was so easy, starting with our direct flight from Brisbane to Santo, transfer to Oyster Island then a 2 minute boat ride over to the Island and check-in .This is the perfect place if you want to relax, avoid crowds, swim, snorkel and explore.
The staff are extremley helpful and friendly, many thanks to Greg,Helen,Marie,Olly ,Casper and Davison for making our trip so enjoyable.
The Mount Hope waterfall tour is a great morning out.Kayaking to the Blue Hole and deserted Islands is a must. Also a day trip to Champagne Beach,Lonnoc Beach and Port Olry is recommended.
All our meals were beautiful especially the Santo beef and the chocolate chilli ribs(husband is still drooling).Plus a 2 hour happy hour was a bonus watching the sun go down.
We will be recommending Oyster Island to friends and family and are looking forward to a return visit sometime soon.Paradise!!

My wife and I stayed in bamboo bungalow10 at Oyster Island for 10 days in August, we had a fantastic time with David, Olly and all the staff and family, The service was second to none and could not be faulted, all staff went the extra mile and it's a credit to you all, thanks especially to Greg ‘camera recovery diver’ & Casper 'the friendly ghost’. There is plenty to do and lots of 'must sees' (Blue Hole, Port Orly & Mt Hope waterfall float).our room was great! Neat and tidy the sink is cracked and the hot water was a tad cold for our liking, but, hey, this is not a 5 star resort, but not that far off it! We will remember it fondly. The food is at best patchy, too much salt some times, too much oil and spice sometimes, sometimes just too much! for us any way. Olly and David may like to take the cooks down to Lope Lope and get them to eat and try everything on the menu there; it was what we would expect at Oyster! (fantastic) We thought Vanuatu as a whole is overpriced for what it is, but the people make the place and the place is a Pacific paradise! that was what we will take with us!

We stayed here for 8 days and absolutely loved it. Oyster is a small "resort" with 11 bungalows right on the water. The island is separated by a channel from the mainland, and it takes a few minutes via their boat to get there. Lovely clear water white sand beach near the jetty and the restaurant, good for swimming and water activities, and also close to the mouth of the Matevulu River where the most pristine beautiful blue hole is located.

We stayed in the largest of the Bamboo Bungalows right on the water and it was clean and well maintained, the bed was a little hard and reading lamps would be good, but that's my only whinge. I mentioned it to Olly (Manager) before we left and she said she could have given me a lamp - I usually ask, but was having such a good time I didn't bother early in our stay

The Managers Dave and Olly were wonderful, really helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Their young children were well mannered and happy to have a chat too. The staff at the resort were very friendly and couldn't do enough for the guests, including the office and restaurant staff, housekeeping, groundsmen, and whoever was on duty to bring the boat across to pick up and drop off guests and restaurant patrons. The managers and staff make Oyster one it of the best and happiest places to stay in Santo if you want a little bit of basic luxury. Dave and Olly mentioned they have been the managers since April 2012, and they're making a positive impact on the resort in my opinion.

Don't expect a five star resort with TV's, DVD players, radio's, phones, or a pool as you won't get those, but you will get very clean accommodation and the best service with big smiles. Mobile phone coverage is a bit iffy at times, and so is the wireless internet access, but who cares really, it suited me perfectly!

You can walk around the island along tracks or the beaches on the ocean side, all the beaches are deserted, with the waves lapping on the white sand beaches, so peaceful.

It was good to chat with other guests, and some of the "yachties" who visited from the yachts moored in the bay, everyone just loved Santo and it's natural beauty and environment.

I'd go back in an instant, and a big thankyou to Dave and Olly and the wonderful staff for our unforgettable visit to Santo.

Room Tip: If you love small "resorts" with the friendliest people I highly recommend
