“Millenium Cave - a must do”

A great experience all round! This tour is run by and goes to support the local villagers (currently building a new school). It's challenging at times and, yes, you do need a reasonable level of fitness. It includes a walk through the jungle to the village (where you will leave dry clothes) and thence to the cave (gorge). The main activity is canyoning - walking through the gorge in thigh-high water - advise you wear reef shoes as the rocks are slippery and uneven and there's a bit of climbing involved (you can wear runners for the walk to the cave, which they will carry back for you). The cave is just magical - complete with bats - takes about an hour or so, after which you have lunch (which you need to bring). This is followed by a walk/float down the river (also has tricky rocky bits to negotiate), a climb up the cliff front and walk back to the village where you can get to meet some of the villagers. The guides were fantastic (very patient with the less fit amongst our group) and shared their local knowledge and customs. It's an all day tour, inclusive of two hours by bus to and from Luganville.

“Get out of your comfort zone”

We did and really enjoyed the experience. Tough going at times, climbing over boulders in a dark cave with minimum light and bats overhead, but the guides were wonderful and coming out into the light and then canyoning down a beautiful tropical river - amazing. Experience local village life, well worth it.

“worth it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

So this is how it goes: from Luganville about an hour by bus to the village; about 30 minutes walk through the bush (no nasty creepy-crawlies); about 30 minutes through the cave, ankle to waist in water (which surprisingly is not cold) in complete darkness (well they give you a torch) making your way stepping on or between river pebbles/boulders; about 20 minutes canyoning, about 20 minutes swimming in the river (again water isn't too cold) with 3 or 4 isles of dry land (however this might be more challenging when water is high, even though life vests are provided); some 15-20 minutes walk uphill back to the village (where refreshment is waiting for you) and back to town. Guides are very helpful if you need help, your bags are carried for you while you are going through the cave and on canyoning/swimming part. All adventure costs 7000 vt p/p, I'd say a bit overpriced. But overall it is enjoyable adventure.

“The Millennium Cave:”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2013

The Millennium Cave:
Wow!! What an experience! An hours jungle walk followed by a half hour slipping and sliding our way through the pitch black cave up to our waist in water with small hand torches to shine on the swallows and bats, followed be some rock hopping, followed by canyoning, floating through water on blow up rings and then a climb out via ropes and ladders! Oh, and then an hours walk out through the jungle :-)
The guides were one to one and although there was a slight language barrier there was good communication which at times was essential! I am quite sure I could not have done it without their assistance. They were always conscientious as to your safety, and even in their bare feet able to walk backwards holding your hand, pointing out where to place your foot/hand etc Not sure I would go so far as to call it dangerous but it certainly wouldn't get past health and safety at home!
It was an exhilarating day and muscles were called into use that hadn't been in a while meaning a very quiet hammock day the following day.
