“Genuine hospitality in paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2013

Shane and Shendel made us feel so relaxed from the moment we arrived and the way they are with their guests is truly unforgettable we felt so comfortable whilst there and the staff are so so lovely and very sweet, the meals were wonderful and generous, the prices were very very reasonable as well.
Our Fare was spacious modern and had plenty of storage for clothing and hanging space, also drawers for bathroom requirements which were large and very practical, we came back to our room on the day of our wedding anniversary to find the girls had written happy anniversary 2013 in little pieces of fern leaves on our bed which must have taken so long to do, it was so thoughtful we will always remember that special moment thank you girls.
Overall the this place could not be faulted I would highly recommend this beautiful place and we felt the most outstanding thing at Barrier Beach House were the genuine hosts who are down to earth helpful people who go above and beyond.

Hi Vicky and Darrin,

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review for us. We're extremely pleased to hear that you enjoyed yourselves and I've shown May and Yvana your comments about their little 'fern' message on your bed. They both do a great job so it's good to be able to show them such positive feedback.

It was really great to have you come stay with us and hopefully we'll see you back here soon.

Cheers,
Shendel

We loved barrier beach house. Shane was the nicest guy ever and was constantly suggesting things to do and making the time where possible to drop us at activities. The little huts right on the beach are the best!

A nice little private place with only 3 little shacks about 15 minutes out of town.

Full of friendly staff, really nice meals.

Best things - The staff really make an effort
A potential downside - Meals, linked activities and cocktails are a little pricy so budget an extra $80 per person per day. Also you'll need a way of getting around so will need to rent a car, use taxies and occasionally you can grab a lift with Shane or Shandell.

Overall a very postive experience

Room Tip: All rooms are the same. No need to get the king room.

Shen and Shane have achieved something special with this small marvelous hideaway on Santo. You can relax, swim, kayak or snorkel on your private beach; or take arranged local or self-driven day trips up and down the Island. I would highly recommended the waterfall gorge adventure tour, an all-day guided drive to the North of Santo and an evening meal at the old school French restaurant in Luganville. This was simply the most relaxing holiday I have ever had.

What an amazing little piece of paradise. Stayed for 5 nights (not long enough) with our teenage son. Rooms are beautiful, location is spectacular, the food amazing but what really makes this place are the hosts Shane and Shendel and their team of beautiful ni-vans. Nothing seems to be a problem for them and their local knowledge is 2nd to none! We will definitely be back as soon as possible!

We ate at the Beach House 3 nights and at Lope Lope and Moyan on the other nights - I wouldn't bother going beyond the Beach House for the evening meal as the food was the best. We were often out at lunch time (and their suggestions for lunch spots was fantastic) but when we were there, their lunch was fantastic as well (the caesar salad is a must).

Room Tip: We stayed in Fare 3 which is set a little bit back from the beach and is a little more sheltered if...

The Bay House is NOT part of Barrier Beach house - it is a separate house on it's own beach but it is managed by Shendel & Shane of Barrier Beach.

When you rent The Bay House it is completely separate to Barrier Beach and the beach is not accessible to you, unless you go to Moyyan's restaurant for a meal, which is just a short stroll and situated between The Bay House & Barrier Beach House.
Not that you need to go to Barrier Beach as you will have your OWN perfectly good beach just metres from your deck!!
My husband and I travelled with my two sons, 13 & 15 and the house was just perfect for us, with our own space, beach, car and ‘do your own thing when you want’ appeal. We felt completely safe, particularly the 1st night when my son said “there’s someone outside!” To be sure there was; Fred, the security guard! We only saw him once but be assured he was ‘around’ we just never ‘saw’ him again. I would say we only saw him the 1st night because he wanted us to!
The house itself is new, spacious, modern & perfect for one or even two families to share. There are 2 double bedrooms & one room with 6 bunk beds & two bathrooms with shower, toilet & vanity. Air con in all bedrooms but we hardly used it as the rooms have fans and shuttered windows & screens which let the air in but keep the bugs out. The kitchen is magical and you simply cannot beat the view while preparing dinner from the produce freshly bought from the markets.
The living area is open plan with lounge, dining & kitchen with floor to ceiling glass looking out to the water....including outdoor setting for 10 & modern bbq on an undercover deck also complete with lights and fans.
There is an outdoor laundry, 2 kayaks AND a car that comes with the house. A little 8 seater van -nothing flash but got us everywhere we wanted to go and very good on petrol! Remember they drive on the right hand side of the road :) something I had to remind hubby a couple of times!
We drove into town most days for supplies, go to the local markets and across the street is the Northern butchers? Meat is cheap & excellent quality in Santo. Remember that most of the shops close down for 'siesta' at lunch time, the markets tho I believe run 24hrs. You never know what you will find from day to day at the markets! Whilst you will not be able to take a shopping list with you it is part of the charm to not have a meal plan, you may find huge live coconut crabs for sale, and no I didn’t buy one!! Finding a pineapple when they are out of season, buying a whole bag of limes for the equivalent of a $1, buying a big bunch of local beans each one over a foot long and as tender as any I've EVER tasted, the sweetest paw paw you will ever taste...magical.
We also went to Lope Lope for dinner TWICE it was so good, with a great atmosphere
Port Olry is a MUST visit as is the Mt Hope Tour, both of which we have done twice now, this time we took my 2 teenage boys (our previous trip was a honeymoon!)
I have written a separate review for the Millennium Tour ~ it was the highlight tour of our trip!
Although we rented the house separate to Barrier we were given a local mobile to contact Shane or Shendel for tours, help or advice at any time, nothing was ever too much trouble and it was so handy to have. I cannot express how comfortable these people make you feel, we met them briefly on a previous visit in 2011 and yes, they remembered us even though we stayed next door at Moyyan.
Couples – stay at Barrier Beach House. Families or groups – The Bay House is for you!
Thank you guys, we can’t wait to visit again, after all, when you’re on a good thing, stick to it!!

My husband and I stayed here for the first seven nights of our honeymoon - we had high expectations given the reviews we had read on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed in any way.

The staff - Shane and Shen were away for most of our visit - returning a day or two before we left. Our host was Rob who did a fantastic job of standing in, and filling the big shoes left behind by Shane and Shen. Thanks Rob you were excellent host and you helped to make our stay a memorable one. Flavia, Sophia, May, Fred and all the rest of the staff whose names I cant remember (sorry) were all lovely and helped to make our stay restful and relaxing. Somehow I managed to put on around 6 kilos (okay 7) during the stay - not sure if it was the banana flambé, the lime tart or the chocolate brownie - or maybe the delicious dinners served to us each night.

As the previous reviewer has mentioned there are lots of spots right outside the resort for snorkelling and swimming ventures and the further off shore you go to the reefs the more life and coral you will see. I probably should have spent a lot more time doing that given the 6 (okay 7) kilos. But I often found myself relaxing on the lounge chairs reading a book and generally being pretty lazy.

The fares are lovely and kept very clean by the team and thank you to the girls who left such a lovely welcome message on our bed the first night we arrived.

I also want to add that the team here are the gift that keep on giving. After leaving the resort and staying elsewhere Shen, Shane and Rob helped my husband and I out immeasurably by organising a car to hire when we had trouble finding a car in town. They dropped it off at our hotel in Santo and invited us out to the golf club later in the day. And this is what these guys are all about - above and beyond everyone's expectations and done so without any fuss or bother. Genuinely lovely people reflecting the friendliness of the people on Santo Island. Thank you so much for helping us out and making our honeymoon such a wonderful time.
