“Fantastic Isolated Luxury”
Reviewed September 30, 2010

A really great place. The villas are exceptionally nice, and the rest of the resort is a little slice of heaven. With only about 10 villas in total you never feel like anyone else is around and the island itself feels isolated but with everything you need. Each villa is only about 3m from their own beach and they are well spaced out for privacy. There is no air conditioning, so windows always stay open which means that the villa loses a bit of privacy as the main pathway passes a few metres behind (but only an issue when those at villas beyond yours are going to dinner). No tvs, stereos etc... but plenty of great spots to read a book and relax. The snorkeling around the island (like in front of the villa) was amongst the best we saw in Vanuatu. New spa over the water is nice also.

The staff are very friendly and will organise any activities you like. Alcohol list is quite good with a few nice cocktails and a reasonable wine list. Food is the only downside - its a bit hit and miss, sometimes very nice, but consistent problems with meals, which is dissapointing when theres no other options. No mini bars to snack from either.

Would definately recommend to others, especially with opening discounted offer current.

From we what we saw of other resorts Ratua is in a class of its own in vanuatu.

Unless you decide to buy and redesign your own private island, Ratua is the closest you can get to such an experience !

Beautiful houses (each room is a isolated house), friendly staff, good food, lovely landscape... What more can be asked ?

We recently stayed at Ratua for 4 nights. The first impression of the island was fabulous. A glorious sunny day we arrived at their jetty to a welcome by Christian, and towels and drinks. The rest of the guest were finishing their lunches at the beach bbq under the shady trees. It was small, quiet, tasteful, and we were very pleased with it so far.
The rooms were great, very rustic and large, straight out of a designer magazine...natural aged timbers, with rugs, and wicker chairs etc. A private deck and beachfront were also enjoyable features.
Food was very good by vanuatu standards. The desserts were at times a let down, however, overall we were satisfied with most meals. The resort was recovering from a fire misshap that occured in the kitchen so we gave a bit of leeway on the dessrts.
Christian was an attentive manager, and the staff were very good. We spent three weeks in Vanuatu and Ratu and the Volcano on Tanna were the highlights.

As a burnt-out executive, I was after somewhere special to recharge my batteries - somewhere within 5 hours flight from Sydney, with great food and wine, excellent weather and gently attentive service.
At Ratua Island in Vanuatu I got all of this and so much more!
Darkness falls quickly in Vanuatu, and I arrived on the island by boat to a gorgeously-lit 'welcome hut', smiling staff and a glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and a cool towel to refresh me after the trip. I was greeted personally by the both the outgoing General Manager Frederick, and his new replacement Christian, and welcomed warmly to the common areas of the island by the local staff.
I was located in the 'Deer' hut a short walk from the main beach, which was private and beautifully fitted-out. The smell of the teak hut was gorgeous, and it opened onto a veranda, a path to an oceanfront private deck, with steps down to a tiny private beach, where you can paddle at high tide. At low tide you can walk out onto the reef itself and view the starfish, sea-snakes and beautiful corals in ankle-deep water.
Ah, the water! Crystal clear, slightly warm and so full of wildlife that you can just watch the ocean for hours. I spent much of my week snorkelling and swimming in various spots around the island, and even horse riding in shallow water with the island's amazing horse wrangler. When I return (because I WILL return!) I will do more adventurous sightseeing, such as visiting the Malo Blue Hole and diving some of the famous wrecks that lie nearby.
The highlights of my trip included horse riding through the coconut plantation, snorkelling on the amazing front beach, turtle watching out on the water at dawn, the beautiful warm natures of the staff and the FOOD!
I have never eaten such beautiful meals in such an amazing location in my life, all washed down with good French, Australian and NZ wines ... heaven. You can get close to nature and the environment without compromising on life's luxuries.
I want to pas on a special thank you to the local staff whose beautiful natures and care for their guests made me sad to leave, and determined to return.
This resort is great value for now, but this will change as more and more people hear about this paradise - book now and take advantage of their opening special prices while they last. Ratua Island has now overtaken Longitude 131 as my favourite resort of all time.

this resort is everything you would want in privacy, service, food, the menu is small but the choices are varied, very enjoyable, plentiful using local produce, Chef Candy does agreat job especially the steak and lobster which are just great. All activities are avilable from very accommodating staff especially the snorkling just off the beach. The fish actually jump out of the water onto the beach!
Frederick the General Manager ensures all guests needs are well and truly looked after.
Ask him about the big one that got away.

I went to vanuatu recently with my boyfriend for my birthday trip and stay at RATUA ISLAND for 3 nights, even thought is a little bit more expensive than others place but then it worth the price especially after i spent another 5 night at some island which ment to be a really good resort and i even ask for a waterfront view and what in front of my view is a big MANGOES TREE!!!
RATUA ISLAND got the best food, best people and best service you will every receive. You always get to eat the fresh (definitely fresh) food and seafood. I travel around port vila and ate in different restaurants and their food just cannot compete with ratua island. Anyone who want to have a nice time and feel they spend their money worthly,me myself definitely recommend ratua island as a place that you must go at least once in your life time.

We heard about Ratua through an article in Australia, so we decided to have a couple of days in luxury to break up our travels around the islands of Vanuatu. Vanuatu does not have much in the way of luxury resorts, but this was amazing! We were greeted at the airport by the general manager, drove a short while to the jetty, and then had a 20 minute speedboat trip to Ratua - beautiful. The sea was flat, turtles everywhere, kids swimming along the island beaches waving... a great experience. The resort itself is quite unique. All the buildings are around 200 years old, brought over from Indonesia - so the whole place has this rustic, Robinson Crusoe feel - but with silk cushions and curtains, gorgeous rooms all on the beach, great service (outstanding by Vanuatu standards), a well stocked bar, and the first proper wine list we have seen since we have been here. (you actually have a selection of 4-5 sauvignon blanc, 4-5 shiraz etc - and some very nice ones too). We went to visit the blue hole at Malo (the next island) - which we thought was nicer than the one in Santo, as there was no one else there, and it is only accessible by a 20 minute canoe ride in - so very private. We also snorkelled on the reef off the beach infront of our room, drove golf buggies around to explore the island, rode horses and swam with them in the ocean... so at the end of the day we did not get as much relaxing in as we had planned - but all the activities (and food) are included in the room price - so we took advantage of it! The most relaxing we got was the long lunches on the beach with a bottle of wine. 3 nights was obviously not enough for us, but I would definately try to come back for a bit more relaxing on the balcony with my book if I make it back to Vanuatu! (and apparently the spa that is being built over the water will be finished in a couple of months) Next stop - Tanna!
