Keep away from this place. We arrived late at night for a two-night stay. Our instructions were to go through an archway and then punch a code into a security panel on a door to our left. However, the massive archway door from the street was locked for the whole period of our stay. We could not get into the courtyard.
We tried to ask several people how to get in, but without success. The area was dark and we had nowhere to go. Finally an English-speaking Swiss traveller offered to find some Russian acquaintances who led us around a dark, eerie back alley to the correct courtyard. But the code we had been given for the security panel produced only an "Error" message.
We had tried several times to ring the desk, where we had been promised an English speaking attendant, but he would simply put the phone down as he couldn't speak a syllable of English. Finally, the friendly Russians rang him on our behalf, and he opened the door for us. We had been promised help to get English speaking taxi drivers. This was not available, so we were ripped off by a taxi driver.
The promised breakfast consisted of dry toast and coffee. There were no screens on the room windows, so the local ferocious mosquitos had a banquet. We received no apology for the wrong information we had been given. The hour or more we spent trying to gain access to this establishment in the dimly lit back street of St Petersburg was upsetting and indeed frightening. Virtually none of the publicity we had been given about this place was true. The room was clean and the location was good, but these are unsufficient reasons to patronise this woeful establishment. Go somewhere else.
