“Not as good as promised”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2012

My wife and I spent 3 nights at this resort from 23rd May 2012 to 26th May 2012. Let me summarize our opinion of the place:

Positives:
1. Nice property on a hill top with good views of nearby area.
2. Very quiet and peaceful place amidst the tea plantation.

Negatives:
1. Very unprofessional (though courteous) staff.
2. Poorly maintained property.
3. Most of the things promised on the website are not available.

Let me start with the good things. The property is actually located on a hill top in the midst of tea plantation surrounded by greenery. From the hill top, one can see the worker's house located below the hill and a good view of nearby hills and plantations. There are no roads close enough for one to be disturbed by the traffic noise. Thus the place is very quiet and peaceful. The building is actually a heritage building complete with sloping wooden roofs and even a fire place in the room.

Now let me get to the bad part. The staff is very unprofessional. The person who deals with bookings etc sits is Kolkata and there are only some 'workers' who manage the property on site. In fact since the property has only four rooms, the management thinks it is appropriate to let it be run by untrained and unprofessional staff. First of all there is no regular room service. On day one, they made the bed but did not change the towels. On day two, they did not even make the bed. Another family in the adjacent room did not find any towels after checking in. On another occasion, the cook forgot to make the omelet as part of breakfast after taking the order in writing. In the third instance, sweet dish was served 20 minutes after the dinner and by that time my wife had already gone to sleep.

The property is also not well maintained. We had to complaint to the manager in Kolkata to even get the TV working. Lawns are not maintained. Kitchen is dirty.

I would have overlooked the above things had the 'attractions' mentioned on the website were there. What made me feel cheated was that almost none of the things mentioned on the website are present on site. For example, when we asked about the tea estate tour, we were told by the staff that we could go to the tea processing unit down the hill and have a look but it may not be functional! Where is the guided tour we wondered? There are no guided treks etc either though we did some walking on foot and encountered a couple of snakes!

There is no library and sports facilities are only for name sake.

Another slight disadvantage is that if you want to go out to nearby areas, cabs are expensive. But that's the price you should agree to pay if you want to live in a secluded and peaceful place.

Final word: If you are looking for a stay at a tea estate, I am sure you can find a better managed one. If you are going to Selim hill, do not keep your expectations too high.

Room Tip: Unfortunately none of the rooms have wall or ceiling mounted fans and it does get warm at night. The...

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2012

Our family spent 5 nights at the Selim Hill Tea Estate during our recent trip to India in early April 2012 and we were extremely pleased with the experience. Our relatives had managed the estate and lived in the bungalow in the 1920s and 1930s, so we enjoyed the whole experience of living where they had lived. The bungalow still reflected its 160 year history and was spacious and comfortable, though the beds were a little firm for westerners. Each room had its own en-suite, though water can not be wasted owing to a break in supply to the whole region due to a major landslip. There was a wide variety of tasty foods cooked by the kitchen staff and this was followed up with black teas that were superb. From the bungalow there are views all around of the Himalayan ranges as well as the plains below and Siliguri. There are interesting walks to be found around the estate taking you through rustic villages and beautiful tea gardens. One would find it hard to find a more relaxing location to holiday in.
The bungalow staff were eager to please at anytime and we enjoyed the visits from the manager of the Tea Estate as well, whose stories and information enhanced our knowledge of the area immensely. He took us on a tea factory tour and also a walk around the estate and would come and sit and chat with us each day. The resort management company based in Calcutta and Siliguri organised our stay in an efficient manner and we felt that we were dealing with trustworthy reliable people. They made every effort to meet our needs which involving finding out as much as we could about our family history in the Kurseong area, and went to great lengths to arrange introductions to people and visits to places which could tell us about our past family. Our stay was a great experience and one that we would recommend to all.

Room Tip: This is a Lifestyle Resort and the rooms are large, basic , clean and it is an older style bungalow...
