“A treasure in the Midlands!”

A group of my friends decided to have our 30th school reunion at Fordoun. We lovedevery moment. The rooms are fantastic. Spacious, beautiful bathrooms, great linen and all the extras. The style is real farmhouse but beautiful and well preserved and maintained. The owner John is always around and a wonderful host. He had me in tears of laughter with his stories. The spa is fantastic. The meals are great. Dont hesitate book now!

I could probably make a much longer list about Fordoun and everything I love about it. It’s a list to which I hope you will add many more reasons of your own. It’s in no particular order of importance.
1. A perfect location and great escape from the city.
2. Sheer indulgence and pure relaxation.
3. Its’ intimate, family owned and has a beautiful story.
4. The misty driveway spotted with dairy cows and lined by pin oaks.
5. The warm welcome greeting from Lazarus and all the friendly staff.
6. Stylish, comfortable bedrooms with roaring fires and attention to detail ranging from rusks for your morning coffee, sherry for the Winter chill and fine linen.
7. All the great books in the lounge.
8. The amazing food and impressive wine list. Two thumbs up to Chef Regis Drouet and his culinary team.
9. The owners involvement in the social, environmental and cultural programmes.
10. Going to sleep to silence knowing you can face the spa and fresh air on your walk the next morning – bliss!
Okay, the above is just a warm-up. I will have to continue this list at a later time.

We recently stayed at Fordoun Hotel and Spa and had the most wonderful time. Our room (19) overlooked the foot Hills of the Drakensberg on one side and the lake on the other. The room was beautifully appointed with a fire place, huge comfortable bed and a indoor/outdoor shower over looking the valley, it was absolute luxury. The staff were friendly and so helpful - nothing was too much trouble. The spa was amazing with a complimentary float in the floatation tank and I had an excellent massage. It was the perfect romantic getaway but next time I am going to stay longer!

We had one of our most memorable weekends at Fordoun! We don't normally splash out on 5 star, so we went all out and got one of the mountain view suites and we don't regret it for a second.

From the first moment everything was just right: the staff, the view, the room, the food... You get the full restaurant menu in your room and can have every dish delivered to your very private patio. The room was every bit as nice as we'd hoped and the small details like the outdoor shower and that someone comes and opens the curtains while you're out and closes them and lights the fire in the evening really mark it as a cut above.

We didn't explore all the activities on offer but made good use of the spa which was excellent. The environment was very soothing and the massages and facilities were great.

We cannot recommend this place enough for someone wanting a luxurious stay in the Midlands, and would also like to thank Jon, the owner, for checking up on us several times during our stay.

Room Tip: It's well worth paying extra for the superior mountain view suites.

Really enjoyed Fordoun for a weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We booked the relaxation package which included accommodation meals and some spa treatments. We picked Fordoun because it had a great hydro arrangement (pool, spa, sauna etc) and looked like a beautiful place to relax and de-stress for the weekend. Unfortunately a couple of days before we arrived we had a phone call to say that the pool was out of action, then another phone call to say one of the specialist spa treatments we had booked was also not available. Hmmm. At least they called to let us know.

The staff were all very friendly, and the public buildings and accommodations were very well kept and comfortable - decorating slightly twee and due for an update I think, but each to his own. Our room was comfortable except for the excessive underfloor heating which we turned down as soon as we arrived, but every time anyone serviced our room they turned it right back up again, aarrgh.

On arrival and across the weekend there were lots of apologies about the services that were unavailable, but no actual offer of anything tangible to make up for this inconvenience, i.e. an additional spa treatment, bottle of wine with dinner, discount on return visit etc, any of which would have been low cost options and greatly appreciated given these were not small inconveniences, and we paid a hefty sum for the weekend.

Food was nice, good choice and the staff were friendly although they seemed to lack a sense of urgency and one in particular mooched around the dining room like she wanted to be anywhere but there.

All in all I would recommend for a relaxing and romantic weekend as the property really is beautiful and the facilities (when working) are excellent.

From the start we felt welcome and looked after. The family owners are very involved and all the staff are well trained and attentive. We stayed in a mountain view suite, which was exactly what we were looking for. The suites are beautifully furnished, spacious and with a lovely fire that was most welcome as winter arrived early and we woke up to a view of snow on the mountains.

We stayed for 4 nights and had dinner there 3 of the nights. The food was delicious and well presented and breakfasts were also great.

The gym is reasonably equipped, we didn't use the indoor or outdoor pool -which looked good, but we did use the spa facillities, where I had the best back massage I've had in a long time.

Room Tip: Spoil yourself with a mountain view suite, but all the rooms look good.

We stayed here enroute from Johannesburg to Durban and we were so glad we did. It is just such a beautiful place. Our room was one of the new suites and it was so warm and luxurious. We were struck by the warm welcome we received from all of the staff, especially Lazarus who has been with the family of the house for a very long number of years. It was the following morning that we met the owner Richard and he too was extremely welcoming and interested in us and our trip.

The spa was excellent. I had one the the best massages I have ever had and I have high expectations when it comes to massage. I loved the spa products too and brought home some hand wash and lotion which is a lovely reminder of my trip to Fordoun. We had dinner in the restaurant and loved it. Our food was excellently prepared, piping hot and we found the service very friendly. It was a cold night and the dining room was so warm and welcoming. The next morning it was transformed into a lovely sunfilled room and the breakfast buffet was excellent. I particularly liked the fact that they had a breakfast menu and would recommend the Eggs Onassis.

This is a really beautiful place. We would like to thank all the staff for their welcome and care. We look forward to a return visit.
