If you'd like to get away from it all and hike for hours through gorgeous rainforest with waterfall pools to swim in, this is the place! The lodge is comfortable and basic. No design magazine style decor or frills, but good mattresses and hot water, fans, reading nooks. Breakfast is abundant and delicious. The owners are friendly and relaxed, and full of information about what to do around the area. The restaurant serves a good variety of food, too.

Room Tip: All of the rooms seem good. All with a view of the forest hills.

Casa Cubuy has multiple rooms and a large patio where breakfast is served that open on the southern portion of the El Yunque rain forest. The setting is breathtaking. The owner Matthew lives in the building and is friendly and helpful. The lodge has a short private path to a river that meanders through the vegetation and is very scenic. You can bathe in natural pools in the river you can reach with easy rock climbing. There are also other trails that take you to waterfalls. If you are interested in the pre-colombian rock carvings that adorn the area Matthew can recommend a guide who has studied them for 15 years and can take you on a private tour. The guide drove us to an archeological site and to an area of the river where the locals bathe. That section of the river has large natural pools with waterfalls and rocks suitable as diving platforms. The breakfast was delicious and served as a communal meal on two long tables. The lodge also operates a restaurant nearby that offers simple staple food. Please note that the rooms are very spartan, have curtains on large windows that do not shield the light and basic private bathroom facilities.

The location of the property was great and so were the people.

However the facility was filthy. The room we stayed in was so dirty. Every corner either had dead or live bugs stuck to the ceilings and all corners of the room. The fan above the bed was so corroded with dirt we were afraid to turn on the fan. The supposedly white bed ruffle around the bed was filthy andhad splashes of red on it. The bed cover was also filthy dirty (which we never used).

You are not allowed to flush toilet paper down the toilet so you put it in a nearby garbage can that is not emptied on a daily basis. The place hasn't been painted in years.

The common area is never cleaned; and during the breakfast there is a dog under the table nudging your knees. One morning right before breakfast the dog threw up on the floor and it stayed there. ugh. We couldn't get out of that place fast enough.

We also spoke with another hotel owner who had their own horror stories of this place.

Will not return to this place.

Room Tip: The noise of the night life is so lound you won't be able to sleep. So be sure to take ear plug...

If for nothing else, Casa Cubuy is worth visiting for the hiking trails! The secluded and undeveloped trails starting right at the foot of the stairs of Casa Cubuy take you to some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Our room overlooked the jungle and the frogs and birds singing you to sleep every night were the best way to end the day. It may not be for everyone, but I want to get off the beaten path and have a little adventure on my vacations, and Casa Cubuy fit the bill perfectly.

I returned to Puerto Rico because I wanted to come back to this place. It is on the south side of El Yunque perched on the edge of a canyon. The road no longer goes through so it is by itself high on the mountain with only a few unoccupied homes nearby. Most of the rooms have a private deck that directly overlooks the canyon where two small rivers meet in a series of waterfalls. You do not see the water from your room but you can hear it, and that and the sound of the coquis and birds is all you hear. At night there are no lights visible except for this lodge. When I was younger I used to drag a backpack up several miles to be in a place like this, now can rest in comfort and peace in this beautiful location.
The lodge itself looks rundown from the outside and if it were in a city somewhere I would never choose it. Everything about it is quirky. The owners are lovely- this is the farthest thing from corporate America in both good and bad ways. It is a little unpredictable.
The breakfast is great with fresh tropical fruit. They did tell me the restaurant (down the road a short way) was open when I made the reservation. Fortunately I had read the Trip Advisor reviews and called the same day and the restaurant was not open that particular day so I stopped and brought a cooler of food and some beer etc. I would really have been unhappy to have to drive down the hill just to eat. They are constructing some other rooms in their neighboring properties so hopefully if there are a few more people in the area the restaurant will reliably be open.
This place is for nature lovers. The main hiking in El Yunque is on the north side of the mountain not accessible from here. There is some nice hiking in this area and they have maps on the wall in the lodge. Below the lodge you can swim in pools in cold water in a waterfall on granite rocks surrounded by tree ferns. You have to be able to put up with a little oddity in the lodging and uncertain footing on the rocks to go there. Okay to contact me for hiking info. The first photo is the view from the deck and the second is from walking up the abandoned road for distant view of the Caribbean.

This hotel in the rain forest has a stunning location with a very rustic private trail to waterfalls that can't be beat. The facility however is a bit run down. The huge room we had overlooks the mountain but had threadbare linens and dirty bathroom walls, the phone in the office below rings loud like it's in your room. The breakfast is fabulous as reviewed but the place just seems unattended. Their restaurant down the road was closed so check if you are headed that way- and stock up on snacks and beer if you wish as you will be in the boonies. If the owner reads this please wake up as people are noticing and not appreciating $125 for a great spot but inattention and shabbiness. We had hoped to stay longer but it just wasn't worth it.

Room Tip: Second floor has best views and privacy

The lodge was easy to get to and the service was friendly, but in general its only a small step above a hostel. The bed was clean as was the bathroom, but this whole place really needs a deep cleaning. It rains every day, sometimes multiple times so obviously moisture is going to be an issue, but it could really use a good power-washing on the outside to help with the invertible mold. Also I expect there to be some bugs in my room, after all I'm in their space but you can get rid of the dead ones instead of just letting them accumulate. That being said your surroundings are beautiful and you get to fall asleep to the sound of the river every night.
