We stayed in a little wooden cabin... With double bed, sofa, dining table and benches, kitchenette with sink (cold water unless you boil some) and a couple of gas burning hobs, and the wood burning stove in the corner.

Kind of like camping but with solid walls, a comfy bed and a veranda to sit and enjoy the view, birdsong and roaming horses. There is no power in the cabins except lighting, but you can use the sockets in the facilities block (down the hill along little paths), where you'll also find the fridges, laundry and toilet block.

We loved the rural, rustic charm. It is a bit of a schlep to scramble to the bathrooms in the middle of the night but that wouldn't put me off staying here again!

For the money it gave us a real away-from-it-all break for a couple of days, while we were close to enjoy the early departing full-day Doubtful Sound cruise from Manapouri.

Fairly basic but high value backpacker. Clean cottages with comfortable beds and a kitchenette. The cottages are scattered on the hill and require some walking from the parking. Common services and laundry are within a short walk . A wood stove keeps you warm during the night . Stunning view on the lake while sitting on the cottage balcony.

Very charming cottages with a spectacular 'million dollar view' from your private balcony, with your own little kitchen & a romantic wood stove. Clean and tidy, nice surroundings with birdsong all day long, the owners Jimmy & Kerstin are amazing & very helpful hosts with great knowledge about Fiordland. We will be back!

Very charming. If you can try and prebook an ensuite cabin it will make a world of difference. this was an amazing rural stay experience. a wooden cabin where you build ur own fire to stay warm at night and use a gas cooker. Stayed w my husband in a standard double and was quite uncomfortable hiking to the toilet (virtually impossible at night-bring a flashlight!!) but it was all part of the experience. breathtaking views on our private porch. woke up to horses chomping on leaves outside our room. Such an incredible and friendly host. A definate highlight must-stay.

Yes it's basic, and it's on the side of a hill (so you have to walk up & down slopes to get anywhere), but it's great fun, relaxed and loads of fun. A wood burner in each cabin!

We had booked a backpacker room at Freestone but upon arrival Kirsten offered us the gorgeous ensuite room in the main house at a reduced rate. After seeing it I couldn't turn it down, actually I wanted to never leave. The room and deck have a 270* view of the lake and mountains, amazing even the next day when it was a bit foggy. There is free wifi, extremely comfy bed, and a spa shower that was too complicated for us mortals but gave a fabulous shower anyway. When we told Jimmy we were going to town to get some cereal he opened his cupboard and gave us breakfast. As we packed to leave Kirsten was playing beautifully on the piano. The backpackers cabins are sweet and I'm sure we would have been content, but this room was just exceptional.

We stayed at several backpackers during our trip to NZ, and this was the best: a nice, quiet, comfortable cabin surrounded by flowering shrubs, with a view of Manapouri Lake and the mountains beyond. The cabin was well-equipped with basic cooking facilities, the bed was comfortable, and everything was clean and well maintained. What more can you ask for?
