We absolutely loved the full day cruise in Doubtful Sound. We hear it's amazing to experience the sound in rainy weather with gushing waterfalls, but I have to say it was pretty spectacular on a bright sunny day. The mountains were majestic and we loved seeing the dolphins, albatross, and NZ fur 'seals'. We were on the 11am cruise (no power station) on 29 December and the tour guide on the mic was excellent. We had lots of poor guides in NZ and it was refreshing to have this guide. Really stellar commentary. Our bus driver between the sound and lake was better going back than on the way there. Thank you driver Paul! Paul took the time to take us to a look out so we could get a picture of the sound from above and he also offered some natural history commentary. Excellent staff and an overall wonderful tour. Thumbs up! Do it for sure, but we suggest you also do Milford Sound which is also amazing but different. We stayed in Manapouri the night before which was a lovely place to stay (versus touristy Te Anau) and 2mins from the boat departure point.

We took a shuttle from Te Anau to Manapouri, it was only 20 minutes or so. Then we had to take a boat to cross the lake Manapouri, the coach across and a cruise. The commentary during the trip was very good and the scenery impressive. So far it was a good trip (but not as good as Milford sound). We took an early cruise, it wasn't over-crowded. The weather was quite nice (no rain).
On the way back we had to drive thru the tunnel and visit the underground power station. I wouldnt recommend it if the weather is nice, if you are claustrophobic or not interested in the very noisy power station (really, the noise is terrible). In my opinion, the tunnel and power station visit should be optional. Thus it's too expensive.
On the bright side: very good organization.

This was a great time from when we boarded the boat with the friendly welcome to the great commentary all the way and the awesome sights we saw. Both boats were very comfortable and allowed plenty of room to see all the views and take photos. Curls the bus driver was great, told us heaps about the area and history and drove us safely down into the power station and over the Wilmot Pass. The sounds were spectacular and the albatrose, seals, dolpins a real treat.

We did the Milford Sound day cruise with Real Journeys and had an exceptional time, the boat, The Milford Mariner, is superb with lots of room and good positions to photograph all the scenery and wildlife. Spectacular scenery on this trip and well worth it, a good commentary from a very knowledgeable guide made the trip interesting. Our night cruise on Doubtful Sound could not have been better. The crew were first rate and we had a cabin on the upper deck that was comfortable and clean. When you could tear yourself away from the scenery and wildlife the food was delicious and the service was once again exceptional. These two excursions are a must to do even if the weather is not brilliant, we had glorious weather on both days and consider ourselves very lucky to have seen whales and dolphins very close up. You won't be disappointed with the level of professionalism and friendliness from this company.

You begin with a boat trip over lake Manapouri, visit the power station and take a 45 min drive to get to the sound. We sat on the top the whole time, you just don't want to miss the amazing views, we saw some dolphins and seals on the trip, beautiful! Good information during the trip!
