“Not to be missed”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

This trip takes the whole day. We travelled from Te Anau and this made it a little less time than travelling from Queenstown. We had a lively young bus driver Justin who entertained us all day with his knowledge and witty dialogue. The scenery is magnificent and the day we travelled the sea was calm and we saw the seal colony at the mouth of the sound. A highlight was going down by bus into the Manapouri Power station about 2 kms inside the mountain. Very much like where you'd think the Stargate would be hidden!!

“Worth the trip”
Reviewed June 1, 2013 via mobile

It's a long trip to Doubtful Sound from Queenstown - 12+ hour day in total - but totally worth it for the 3 hour cruise. The tour guides were great and we learnt lots about the fiord and wildlife. Views were amazing and there were heaps of waterfalls given the rain recently. Definitely worth the long trip out.

“A Day to Remember”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Our trip to Doubtful Sound was long and totally worth it. We did the two hour coach ride from Queenstown, the boat ride across Lake Manapouri, the bus ride up over the pass and then the cruise on the sound. Then the trip in reverse. The day was perfect. The views were incredible. Mother Nature cooperated and the boat was able to put its bow into the Tasmanian Sea. The reflection shots at the end of the cruise were spectacular. We had booked a Milford Sound cruise but due to road closure because of falling rock we were forced to change plans and decided to do Doubtful Sound. We consider this the luckiest chance.

“Amazing views!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

We did the day cruise. We stayed in Te Anau, drove to Manapouri and got on a boat which took about an hour, then took about an hour bus to get on the cruise in The sound. To say that the scenery is spectacular is an understatement. It had snowed for two days straight before we went on the cruise so it was a winter wonderland! We saw dolphins and sea lions, but no penguins :-( The cruise facilities are not great, basically is just a big boat with tables and couches, nothing fancy, at all. I did a 2 night cruise in Halong Bay and I loved it, I don't think I would have liked more than a day trip in the sound. It's beautiful, but not much to do around it, cuz everything is protected by the department of conservation. They took us to the power plant after the bus returned us from the sound cruise. Honestly, I didn't care enough to refuse this part of the trip, but it was a bit uninteresting. I mean, it's just a power plant. I think what impressed me the most about it is how proud the kiwis are about it, which is kinda cute :-)
The boxed lunches were ok, nothing exciting. You can buy drinks (alcoholic & non-alcoholic) and coffee, tea and water is complimentary.
You check in at 925 and don't return to the place where you started in Manapouri till 530ish. So it's a whole day of touring, plan ahead!

“Simply Magical”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

It's really hard to explain how amazing this day trip to Doubtful Sound really was. The landscape in that part of New Zealand is simply magical and it should be compulsory for every New Zealander to experience a trip to Fiordland. Real Journeys did a wonderful job and were such genuine people - always keeping us well informed and well fed! Thanks so much for an amazing day.
