We stayed two extra days in Manapouri to do the kayak trip to Doubtful Sound and thoroughly enjoyed it. One trip to Te Anau with the endless coaches and tour companies for Milford Sound made us doubly sure this was the right decision. Whilst the trip is expensive, it is good value for money - the equipment us excellent, the staff friendly and knowledgeable and there are four boat journeys and two bus rides involved all on their own private transport. Doubtful Sound is absolutely stunning and in the several hours we were on the water we saw just two other boats. Special mention for our guide Cloudi who was full of interesting and detailed information about the history and environment of the area.

We have been all over New Zealand in our year here and this was a highlight of our trip. Not only did Jo kindly pick us up from Te Anau and bring us to Manapouri, but she helped us with booking accommodation and transport back. We did Milford by kayak and it was beautiful but Doubtful sound was the true hidden gem of our trip. Do the all day kayak trip if you can, if the weather is nice you can even camp in a remote area of the lake. You travel far out into the Fiords and kayak freely for hours - even if it is raining, it is a magical time. The experience was amazing and I would recommend it for anyone who would like a more back country, unique experience of Fiordland. Just make sure you actually know how to kayak somewhat before you go, there were 2 people that could not and they slowed everyone up!

We did the full day kayaking tour on Doubtful Sound, and it was a fantastic experience. The traveling (boat and bus) is a bit tiring to get out there, but it is definitely worth it! The views are unmatched.

Our guide, Kye, was very personable and made the experience that bit better. He had a vast knowledge of the area, including plants and wildlife, even though he had only been there for a few months.

I'm very glad we opted to do Doubtful, because the day was mostly undisturbed by big cruise boats and the like, which allowed us to really soak in the beautiful scenery. It was amazing how quiet it was out there.

Make sure to bring some insect repellent, as we forgot to, and every time we stopped by the trees we were swarmed by bugs, which ended up giving me a nasty rash (either that or the water).

Great experience!

We just had a really great day with this firm in Doubtful Sound. It seems to take lot of organizing this trip (Bus, Boat, second bus and second boat). After all the money spent didn't feel so much as it felt beforehand. Guide was great. He knew a lot about the area although he wasn't local and had spent only one month in the area. Good group management and guiding all in all.

If you only have time to do one sound, make it Doubtful! We did a 2 hour cruise on Milford and then a day kayak with Fiordland on Doubtful. An incredible 10 hour day with great guides, fun, loads to see and a relaxed atmosphere plus barely seeing anyone as opposed to the buses of people at Milford - well worth the money!
