I have just returned from a trip to thornton lodge, and can not stop singing its praises. I retreated for a little peace and quiet and that was exactly what i got. Set in the heart of the countryside the views and surrounding walks are wonderful, and the house completely exceeded my expectations. It was so elegant and spacious, my room was absolutely beautiful, very clean and decorated to a very high standard. Vannessa who runs the establishment was exceptionally accomodating and so friendly, i really felt like i was at home instantly. I will definately return, taking family and friends.

It was lovely to be met with a smile ,hot drink and biscuit. The guest lounge was a lovely place to relax. The beds are really comfy and it was so peaceful. The wine cooler in the room with fresh milk and space for the odd bottle was really useful .The bath salts were just what weas needed after a long walk .I certainly would recomend it to my friends and will be visiting their again.

We did not know what to expect but what a great find. Tucked away up the drive is the beautiful lodge. We were made really welcomed from the start. A nice cuppa on arrival. We were in the suite on ground floor and the pictures on the web did not disappoint. It was huge and spotless. It had everything you needed including "fresh milk" in the fridge and not those horrible little packs. The room had no less than 5 huge windows including a big bay. We had great views.

Vanessa who runs the lodge with her family is lovely and made us feel so welcome. She does all the cooking herself and although you do not have a menu the food was lovely and plentiful. Breakfast was made to order. Everything was fresh and hot.

If you are looking for a hotspot this is not for you. But for scenery, excellent accomodation
and relaxation it is a must visit. I have already recommended this to our friends. Leyburn is about 30 mins. away and it is a lovely town. There are also pleant of places to visit around and about. I would post pictures but havn't worked out how to load yet! The pictures on their web site show you what it is like.

Many thanks Vanessa for a lovely stay.

We stayed Thornton Lodge for 1 weeks it looked good on the web site but when we arrived they hadn’t just shown the good bits on the web site it was simply stunning inside and out. The pictures cannot show the tranquil setting in the middle of beautiful countryside. We where warmly received by Vanessa who ensured we enjoyed our stay. The large room was very tastefully decorated and furnished with period furniture. We enjoyed the feeling of living in a big country mansion without feeling the stuffiness sometimes found in these places. The communal areas were large allowing us to mix in comfort with friends and new acquaintances .
We have already booked to return later in the year.
Value for money is exceptional having stayed at many other places at twice the cost and not a patch on Thornton Lodge.

This was my 4th visit to Thornton Lodge - I am totally in love with the place. Location perfect, bulding magnificent and well maintained throughout, rooms (I have stayed in three different ones) all equipped to a high standard including White Company toiletries, ambience very relaxing and welcoming, Vanessa (the owner) always very welcoming and will do anything in her power to make guests feel at ease and at home, breakfast typical Yorkshire fare with excellent selection, grounds very well maintained, price extremely competitive for the standard of accommodation received. By far the best hotel in the area.
Overall, I would urge everyone to visit this haven of tranquility. I now feel like this is my second home and Vanessa a FRIEND :)

We love the yorkshire dales and I wanted a hotel hidden away from the world in a way, which is what we got with thornton lodge I cant fault the location the grounds or the hotel room which was fab although we did not have a dvd in our room or ironing board or robes or hair dryer as per the website states for the four poster room. There is also a limited amount of things to do in the hotel, there is no bar which we knew before we went so as per the owners words you can bring your own drinks, the hotel does not offer any outside tables and chairs for good weather, there is no where to sit which we thought especially following this weekends weather was poor that could be because of the pen foul (peacocks) the owner keeps.

Overall the hotel is more a place to sleep rather than the whole package, you are left to your own devices with no one from the hotel around during the day which some people may like. The rooms are very quiet and peaceful.

My review is more a constructive help rather than anything else.

We can confirm that our four poster room contains all of the items listed upon our website. Thornton Lodge has a huge guest lounge and sun room for guests to relax in and does also have a number of pre-existing benches within the grounds for use by guests. Thornton Lodge is a five star silver rated bed and breakfast and does not advertise itself as an hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Thornton Lodge is a family home in Upper Wensleydale. Vanessa lives there with her family and offers b&b during the summer and has a 5 star gold rating from Visit Britain. All rooms are different, pleasantly decorated with very comfy beds and nice views and there are lots of pictures of each room on her website. She cooks a really nice breakfast. The house has some wifi but it varies from room to room as the walls are so thick. It is extremely quiet at the house, especially after the loss of her pet peacock Percy during the summer of 2015. She is not licensed but encourages guests to bring their own drinks to enjoy at the house and provides glasses and fridges with a pint of milk in all rooms. One room is reserved for guests with mobility difficulties and two rooms are allocated for guests needing single occupancy. Children over 14years of age are welcome at the house in her large ground floor room. In winter she sometimes hosts for guests celebrating special events. Generally she avoids taking bookings to stay at the house just for one night. Whilst the house is huge - around 9000sqft, Vanessa works on her own and therefore restricts the number of rooms booked at anyone time to a maximum of 12 guests - generally there are 6-8 guests staying during the week and a few more on a weekend. ... more   less
