“STILL a great place to stay in one of nicest villages in the Dales”
Reviewed July 6, 2014

Visited 9 years ago and stayed again, this time to view the Tour de France which came through the village.
As previous village, it's a sizeable old property in a beautiful setting, with the river running through the garden opposite. The house is full of an eclectic mix of objects and run by a team who were very busy this weekend due to the vast increase in numbers of visitors to the Dales, but who still managed to give a personal, friendly service.
This time we stayed in a double room with the children on a double sofa bed, as it was the last room available due to the exceptional circumstances. But the room was big, as was the bathroom.
Only two minor issues that irked our teenage daughter; one was that the TV didn't have the full range of Freeview channels (due to it having a Freeview adapter), and the other was that, due to her being on the O2 network, no mobile coverage (not the Grange's fault) or wifi available. Hence a "very good" rather than "excellent" review.
Highly recommended once again.

We have just returned from a long weekend break in the coach house. After driving for 3 hours to get there and 4 tired children in the car we rang the owner to say we had arrived! We then had to wait about 25 mins (sat in the car) for her to walk from the main house, which is about 20yds away, to let us in! When we got in we realised there was no travel cot, no extra bedding for the cot or the sofa bed which we would have to use, the owner left and returned with these things, when I went to sort the cot bed out the bedding she had given us stank of cigarette smoke, there was no way my baby was sleeping with that, I rang the owner again and she returned with more bedding which wasn't much better! Good job we had bought a sleeping bag for him! The shower was terrible, a cold drip is the only way I can discribe it!! The tv went from blue to green to orange! When we tried to open a window, because the condensation on a morning was unreal, we were infested with hundreds of dying flies, disgusting!! On the plus side the bed was sooooo comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped, it is in a beautiful location and West Burton is worth a visit, but we won't be returning to The Grange!

Our Twin room was lovely. The house is filled with antiques and had a grand ambiance. There are a few stuffed animals but I did not find these offensive. If you are likely to be offended The Dales is not a place for you as most establishments have some kind of taxidermy on display. We did find however the owner somewhat less friendly after asking for a 8.30 breakfast. Breakfast was served in a brisk manner with no pleasantries and the only words muttered was those needed to facilitate breakfast. We both opted for toast and cereal fearing anything more would be too much to ask. We were kept waiting 10 mins to pay our bill as the owner choose to ignore the bell for service. Shame - lovely place but would not choose to stay again.

We stayed at The Grange for one night and was really pleased to find they had a room for us. The owner made a great effort to enable us to stay despite the decorators being in for some work. The whole house is beautiful and the furnishings, decor and artefacts fitted in well with this period house. Our room was of a high standard, with a beautiful roomy bathroom, clean and well maintained. The owner made us feel welcome, without any fuss which we like when choosing a place to stay. Breakfast was fantastic, served in a character dining room. We have stayed at West Burton many, many times over the last 12 years, it really is a beautiful dales village. Will stay again at The Grange when we get the chance.

Had a great stay here recently, did not book prior just turned up and was welcomed by the owner, great room, well maintained and decorated, fab house to stay in with lots of history.
I see past reviews with very petty comments, most likely city people who expect a 5 star hotel service and to be called sir and madam.... The Grange is in the best location with plenty of activities to keep you busy around the area.. If you want a place to stay which is full of history, great owners and free to do what you want to do then this is the place. Thank you!
Ps great breakfast in the dining room, choice of cereals and the owner will cook a great fry up for you.

Very short and hectic welcome, water boiler standing on the floor (we had no possibility to arrange this otherwise). No possibility to open two of the three windows, shower out of function. No reaction when we told this, no concession concerning the price.Chair in the room with broken cover. The breakfast was the worst (burnt ham) during our three-week-trip. Absolutely not what we expected in a five star accommodation.
