Brought my mother here for a couple of days of walking and eating and generally having a good time. John and Pat are the perfect hosts. John has a great sense of humour and Pat puts up with him very well! Our twin room had great views across the hills and we couldn't have been made more welcome. Pat's breakfasts were superb and just what you need to set you up for a day in the Dales. After dining out in Middleham about 5 miles away (we can recommend the White Swan), we relaxed in the sitting room listening to John's CDs and supping some wine we picked up on the way, which John kindly refridgerated for us to finish off the next night. We bought some of Pat's handmade greetings cards for forthcoming family occasions, and being a keen cook myself, also bought one of Pat's recipe books she put together by request some years ago. Pat's cross-stitch and paintings provide a lovely backdrop all around the house, and she's clearly a very talented woman - hang on to her John! All in all, a lovely stay, and we would definitely return.

There is more to a successful B&B than tasty food, pleasant rooms, attractive scenery, and good beds. That "more" is best expressed by a word usually associated only with human beings – "character." This trait makes a place special, and Abbots Thorn is indeed special! Yes, Pat is a terrific cook; yes, the rooms are tastefully decorated; yes, the Yorkshire Dales are beautiful; and yes, the beds are comfortable. But, in addition, Abbots Thorn is unique in its character. There is a feeling of friendliness that confronts guests right from their arrival. There is an honesty in the nature of Pat and John's recommendations of places to go, be they restaurants, attractions, walks, or drives. And then there's John, serving Pat's wonderful food with more than a few jokes, singing show tunes as he cleans up, or telling you about the seriousness of his work on the water commission or the fun of his various stage adventures. Oh, and be sure to check out Pat's wonderful handmade greeting cards. How many establishments offer all of this? There is only one Abbots Thorn.

Having stayed here for 10 times now, over even more years, I think I can say the title is spot on! Pat & John are always friendly and eager to help in any way they can to make your stay even more comfortable and pleasant. Most other guests we met were very nice company with even some we would like to meet there again. We even stayed there with whole our family on one occasion (our parents 40th wedding anniversary) everyone loved it. Needless to say we will come back next year and the year after and after and ...

My wife and a couple of friends stayed in May for four nights. The welcome set the tone for our stay, it was very friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. We had the Lilac room which is slightly larger and includes a sofa. The room was en suite, had a hair-dryer, colour TV and hospitality tray with good selection of beverages. The breakfasts are excellent and really set you up for the day, walking or just taking in the views you won't want to eat until you return for dinner. Dinner is optional but bearing in mind the location it is well worth having as opposed to having to find somewhere each night. Menus were excellent as was the food, we couldn't fault anything. Although not licensed you are welcome to take your choice of wines etc.
