“A really good time out!”
Reviewed May 7, 2012

My wife and I had the set meal at, circa, 17 euros each. The wine list is extensive if a little on the expensive side. Both of us thought that the set meal for lunch was as good as it gets at the price.
The dining room is beautifully decorated and unusually lit. All in all it was extremely good and well worth a return visit.

If I have a complaint I thought the service was less than perfect. When I rang for a reservation for 1300 I was told to make sure I didn't get there any later and 1245 would have been better. We did arrive at 1245 and quite what the fuss was about I have no idea. The restaurant was not full and later diners were accommodated without problem.

“A good night out”
Reviewed March 10, 2012

We went to this restaurant on the recommendation of friend and were not disappointed. It is in a beautiful location and is very welcoming. The food is good, the service also good and the price is reasonable for what you are getting. Good wine cellar

“Highly recommended”
Reviewed October 17, 2011

We visited this restaurant on the last day of our holiday and what a find. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening in a lovely setting. The food was superb and the staff very attentive. Having had a bad experience earlier in the week in a restaurant in Jarnac this was a wonderful end to our holiday.

“Good food, shame about the service”
Reviewed July 22, 2011

Six of us ate at L'Essille recently as a special treat as it is rather more expensive than we would normally pay for a meal. We all enjoyed the food, but two aspects of the service surprised us for an "upmarket" establishment. I asked for a "carafe d'eau" and the waiter brought two open bottles and left them on the table. it was only later that we realised that one was sparkling (in a Badoit bottle) and the other still (in an Evian bottle). As they were already open, they could have contained anything! We were charged 5 euros for each.

We ordered two bottles of wine. These were also brought to the table already opened, and no-one offered us the opportunity to taste either of them. Again I find this unacceptable for this class of establishment.

I emailed the restaurant to complain and was told that they were short-staffed that evening due to one person having had an accident.
