We arrived at Vines restaurant at Helen's Hill without a reservation but they were able to seat us without an issue, although if booking would recommend tables by the window.

Initially we were concerned that on the weekend diners are obligated to order either a entree and main or a main and dessert, we felt we were being trapped into having to buy more than we wanted. When we asked the waitress she advised we were not held to this since we had not booked ahead.

Service was ordinary - we had two pieces of white bread plonked down in front of us and had to ask for butter which when brought out was small serve and refrigerated cold so not the best start to what ended up being a beautiful meal.

After seeing the menu we ended up ordering a main and dessert each! For main we had porterhouse ($31) and veal scallopini with olive tapenade ($29) both of which were beautiful even though the porterhouse was a little bit over medium-rare. We also ordered greens on the side for extra $7 which were lovely. And then we could not resist the desserts which were absolutely gorgeous.

The restaurant is separate to the cellar door - located further up the hill. We did not have to time to do a tasting of the wines but would recommend this place for a lovely lunch. We also noticed that the floor was heated and the overall building design was beautiful.

We have dined here several times over the years and are yet to have a bad experience. Food and service is always great, and a daylight visit presents amazing views over the surrounding area.
Good gluten free menu and selection which is wonderful. Good solid performer.

Floor-to-ceiling windows offer wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. It so good to sit facing the windows, watching the changes in sunlight and enjoying good food.

We have eaten at The Vines at Helen's Hill several times. We usually share a taster plate of local goodies, but had indulged in a large breakfast. However my partner could not resist the soup of the day: small balls of lamb in a tomato based broth. ($12.50) I had a craving for fresh vegies so chose a side of steamed green vegetables as an entree.($7) They were beautifully cooked and delicious!

Both my partner and I selected the sirloin steak for our main. It was a bit chewy - as sirloin can be - but the sauce and vegetables on the plate were tasty. ($32). We'd had a few wine tastings prior to lunch so just had a glass of wine each. ($8).

A little rumball was served with our coffees. We enjoyed the meal and will be back again.

The views, surroundings, wine and wait staff are great but.......it can't make up for average food.
The walk to the cellar door was good and I'd be happy to grab a bottle of wine and some cheese and sit on the deck there.
