“Amazing Spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

My girlfriend and I have traveled a lot and the last thing we want on a trip is an experience we can get just about anywhere. Popa is most certainly not that. The resort was beautiful and unique, the staff members were very friendly, laid back but always attentive, and know how to make a mean cocktail. There are many excursion/activity options, but there is no pressure to take advantage of them. We later spent a few days on Caranero Island so we decided to just stay put and enjoy the beautiful pool and surroundings of the resort.

We were initially wary of an all-inclusive resort since they can be pricey and cookie-cutter, but after coming home and reviewing the money we spent, Popa was almost as cheap and a much better experience than most of other places we stayed in Boca. The resort was very nice yet not over the top. And man! The food!

We couldn't recommend this place any more.

My wife and I spent 4 days in paradise at Popa in early July 2013... the resort itself is breathtaking. Dyllan will be your contact when booking and will take care of every detail- you'll be pressed to find a nicer guy when setting up a vacation... Darrion is a 5 star chef who will serve anything from Calamari stake to one of the best curry's you'll ever eat. And Ty takes care of the rest around the pool from an awesome cocktail to a good conversation. All of the guys are very interesting/kind people and easily add to the overall character of this place. For us, Popa was very friendly on the budget but the quality and class we experienced was priceless.. I trusted reviews when booking Popa and this is the only reason i'm writing this one- GO THERE if you like to relax and enjoy paradise with good people.

The grounds and the ocean view are beautiful eye candy. Although we went in the rainy season, we had plenty of good weather days. We met lots of interesting people, including the staff. We all loved the food and, of course, the service. Our rooms were amazing! They were beautifully decorated, airy and luxurious. We are all divers and went diving most days. The diving was a bit disappointing, as the visibility wasn't as expected, because of the weather, but the worst day diving ... We would all love to go back, anytime!

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms at the far northern end of the resort are the ones to get. We had the best breeze...

Many thanks for your wonderful review. We are so pleased you had a good vacation with us, the diving is usually spectacular but the visibility can be influenced by the weather. Summer is the best time to get the flat glassy seas for the best dives.

My husband and I recently spent 4 nights at the glorious Popa Paradise and loved every minute of it! It is an all inclusive resort, and from the moment we stepped off the boat our every need was met. Dyllan and Darrion (the co-proprietors) along with Ty, who manages most of the day-to-day operations were the most amazing hosts in an environment that is called 'paradise' for a reason. Dyllan and Darrion hand selected the gorgeous furniture and furnishings creating breathtaking surroundings. Glorious grounds where you can explore the jungle for miles (guided or on your own), clean, accessible beach areas, a stunning pool with a swim up bar where staff are on stand by to bring you beverage, food, towels, ANYTHING you may need. Want to take a day trip to a neighboring island? No problem- they'll arrange the boat and pack a lunch cooler too. Need to make arrangements for your next stop? Change your flight? Arrange for transportation? Recommendations for other parts of Panama? They do it all and with a smile. And get a massage from Darrion- OMG- he's incredible. He is also a master chef and our dinners at Popa were fresh and fabulous (see the picture of the lobster dinner we had- one of the best meals we had in Panama). The customer service ethic at Popa Paradise is exceptional--all the personnel at Popa to a person were phenomenal. The rooms were extremely clean, with air conditioning, hot shower, refrigerator for beverages, etc. We traveled throughout the country for 3 weeks (Contadora Island, Bocas del Toro, Casco Viejo, Panama City) but our stay at Popa was a definite highlight of the trip. Popa Paradise is a truly amazing destination!

We couldn't have been happier with our visit to Popa Paradise. It was so fantastic to be so remotely located from the mainland. We could do nothing, or anything, on any given day. The pool and beach were equally great options for us on the "nothing" days. We took two excursions on the catamaran - a snorkeling trip and a visit to a very secluded beach on a neck of land solely inhabited by the indigenous peoples. We would highly recommend taking the day trips - we felt like these were among the more special experiences of our honeymoon.

The casita was clean and comfortable and very private. The only fault we had with it was the shower, but as you can see from the 5 star review, it isn't enough to alter our overall opinion. It was VERY difficult to navigate between freezing cold and scalding hot, and the pressure was non-existent. But we really didn't care - the ocean was the best way to rinse off!

The food is excellent there - Darrion really is a talented, inventive, self-taught chef. We ate fish every day, twice a day, and never tired of it. His soups and chowders are absolutely unbelievable - you'd think hot soup would be the last thing you'd want there in April, with temperatures in the 90s, but it was too good to pass up.

The staff (Dyllan, Darrion, and Ty, among others!) are so friendly, sweet, and very laid back - welcoming without being overbearing. We adored the quirky vibe they imbue to the resort and missed them the second we left the island!

Transfers to and from the resort are made simple with their help.

One caveat - we arrived the day after Easter, which apparently concluded a very busy week for the resort. When we arrived, there were only a small handful of guests. For our last two days, we were the ONLY guests there. This made the experience extra special for us - but others may want more social activity! We got to hang out with the owners & staff, and dined with the boat's captain, his wife, and their friends a couple of nights - they were a lot of fun!

It does rain/ get cloudy quite often in Bocas, so be sure to bring plenty to read. There is wifi in the clubhouse but we think the most special thing about the resort is the ability to disconnect from the world. Leave your laptop and iPad at home!

Overall, this is a very, very special place - and we couldn't be happier with our decision to honeymoon there!

Room Tip: I think we were in Casita 10 - farthest out from the others, right on top of the beach. The ocean c...

Call me old fashion, but 5 star service is not about how expensive the sheets in the casita are. It's not about the materials used to trim the walkway around the infinity pool. It's not even about how far one can remove themselves from civilization. Don't get me wrong, the decor and design absolutely help to set the stage, but what separates Popa from other all-inclusives is the way the people and the resort can enrich your life.

5 star is about Ty going to town and getting the best bottle of bourbon he could find because I mentioned liking manhattans. It's about Darion welcoming my wife into the kitchen as if we were family visiting for the weekend. It's about the way you feel after talking to Dyllan about anything. It's about a staff that puts connection first and let's the natural beauty take it from there. And just because I don't want to leave it understated, THE PLACE IS GORGEOUS.

Popa Paradise is absolutely worth the adventure. Try the Yoga. Take the boat out for a day. Go step outside yourself for a bit. We did and loved every minute of it. Thanks to everyone!

Katie and I will certainly be back! ..."FASHION SHOW!!!"

Had a good time. Nice people managing and working at the place. Ty, Darrion and Dyllan were all great and made our stay very enjoyable. Darrion is a very talented cook, so every night we had some amazing dinners. The rooms were very clean and all of the other staff were very nice.

It was a cool location. I'd recommend this place for anyone looking to get away or looking to stay off the grid. I was here with my fiance and she loved it as well. It was nice to get away for a few days and we will go back if we're around bocas/popa again.
